Schooner Polotsk 1777 by Mike Y and his daughter - Master Korabel - 1:72

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the encouragement! We are reading all comments together, and it really makes her surprised that some People From All Over The World are watching her progress :)

Progress was really slow, but for a good reason - we were busy with lots of other activities.

From now on, most of the photos are described by Daria, and I am my few cents where necessary:

Daria: here I am cleaning up the glue with dremel, so we will be able to glue some other parts on it

My comment: making sure that using proper safety gear is a habit and not something "weird". That was easy, since at the moment she wants to be like a dad, and if dad wears safety glasses and respirator - then she will do it as well :) Of course the fit is not good, the respirator is basically useless if it does not fit the face properly, so I am not doing any dusty work when she is around.

post-5430-0-26884500-1485109496_thumb.jpg

Daria: we steamed the hull sides with boiling water so they could be bent. We do everything without mistakes (trying to)

post-5430-0-80290800-1485109497_thumb.jpg

Daria: I am building a city here, myself, without any help. My dad gave me a lot of small wood pieces.

There is a man in this city, a kite, and one butterfly. This city is imaginary. It also has a trampoline, airport and few small ships. That ships sail by themselves, they know where to go.

post-5430-0-92684600-1485109498_thumb.jpg

Daria: here we are gluing the right side of the hull and then we clamp it. Clamping was very tricky!

post-5430-0-10846200-1485109500_thumb.jpg

Daria: we will build a box, I will help as well. I already used a hand plane to smoothen the wood plank! I selected the most interesting parts of the planks - one looked like butterfly, one like sun, and another one like a squirrel tail!

My comment: I was really pleased that she got the idea of a wood figure, and prefers some interesting parts ("sun", "butterfly" and "squirrel") instead of just a smooth part of the plank without any figure. My previous epoxy fill was not very good, lots of bubbles, so I am redoing it properly this time, using torch to quickly get rid of all bubbles.

So there would be a delay again - this time to make a jewellery box, exactly like I did for my wife (photos are here: http://imgur.com/a/7fNCc ), but smaller. I promised, now need to deliver :)

Grant, Carl, Brian - thank you!

(I would have liked to see the jewelry box picture(s), but your link didn't work for me! :(

Oops, I made a typo in the link. Corrected it, now it should work.

Not much happened, we were out of town for three weeks :)

Using chisel for first time!

Starting the first layer of planking. Clamping is quite tricky, I should have prepared better :)

Thanks for comments!

The planking is slowly progressing. Daria is taking some boring tasks, like marking the planks according to the manual (to avoid mixing them), sanding the plank edges, etc.

58d6b9cad7c48_Foto2017-03-14201554.thumb.jpg.79420c88e61359d7ad4e071e4f5f16f1.jpg

And she even nailed that planks in place! Typically, I was holding the nail with pliers, and she was carefully hammering it. Hard to do it alone, so this time her help was really crucial. We are going the easy route and not steaming the planks, just nail them to the hull and remove most of the nails later on. This is the way the manual recommends it as well.

58d6b9ccb49cd_Foto2017-03-25193412.thumb.jpg.44ce338d4a4569426c0aa9d1aa3c2beb.jpg

As a result, it looks quite ugly in some places, but it is a first layer of planking - so would not be a problem after fairing :)

Daria and Mike,

What a lovely project this is! I'm fascinated by the Russian kit, as a former Russian Language major in college. It looks quite interesting and well-crafted, and I would probably have fun trying to translate the instructions.

And I can't say enough about how lovely it is to see a daughter-father project like this. Daria, you're doing excellent work so far and I hope you won't mind a random American following along to learn from what you're doing.

Looking at the bow in that photo, did you feel that the kit provided enough internal support for the planking? There don't seem to be any filler blocks. Are the planks well-spiled enough to fit smoothly without any further support or aid?

Eric, I actually never used the instruction text (it is written in a very formal way, hard to translate). But the pictures in the instructions are quite detailed, so text is not really needed.

There is a longitudinal filler block that looks enough. They are all spiled. Seems to hold fairly well, there is enough surface for a proper glue adhesion.

Nice progress Daria. Those planks seem to be going on very well. The boring tasks may be boring, but they are necessary to get a good end result. Keep up the great work.

No updates for a while - Daria has a number of hobbies and interests, plus a birthday party season, so we had a long break :)

Some awkward clamping, second pair of hands was very useful when trying to install these clamps:

5936e93b9fa72_Foto2017-04-29203311(1).thumb.jpg.592fc5b42ac731db9d71f802d92bf0c1.jpg

Lego break :) One of many "other things"...

5936e93e6c39a_Foto2017-06-06124058.thumb.jpg.7c87b64babbc093e40c1c7640f430369.jpg

Using sander to shape the last plank:

5936e9411dc44_Foto2017-06-06165125.thumb.jpg.974979d0cd532102e011fb5318e856c3.jpg

Last one is installed!

End result. Looks super ugly, but this is a first layer that would be hidden under the second one, and I really did not want to overcomplicate it by introducing steam bending into the process. And without steaming planks crack in the bow.

Now aiming to fair the hull and hide this horror with a nice second layer, made of veneer :)

Nice to see you back at the workbench Daria. Good effort on the first planking - can't wait to see you complete the second planking.

With summer break around the corner I can understand there will be less time with the ship.

However, I like the progress and many of us has taken even longer time between updates and commitment to our builds.

No hurry, we will be here just rolling our thumbs doing nothing and waiting for another update. lol ☺

I've just noticed this message on the webpage:

To our foreign customers. The translations of manuals into English are currently at the beta state. They are correct, but the language is a little rough. Here is the list of translations that can be downloaded: MK0302 Schooner Polotsk

Might come in handy :)

Thanks for likes and comments!

Re manual - haven't really used the text part of it yet, pictures are quite self-sufficient, and the text is written in a very heavy and formal way (like a precise specification), which should be handy in some complicated parts of the build.

As expected, very rough and ugly first planking was easily faired :) Now it provides a smooth and round foundation for planking.

Daria enjoyed it as well - she liked the transformation of smth rough to smth smooth. That took some efforts though!

Sanding:

Smooth vs rough:

She ended up complaining that I was sanding myself too much (we were doing it in turns), and insisted that I should not touch it, let her finish without assistance. Hoorray! :)

When preparing parts for the next modelling session, I noticed a slight difference between our model and how it looks in the manual...

59e1002a66173_Foto2017-10-12195326.thumb.jpg.1122701de9e753673b20cb40f694fdd5.jpg

Apparently some parts are not permanent, but a temporary alignment jigs. They are not supposed to be permanently glued. D-oh!

I was such an idiot :) Followed the manual blindly, like a Lego. Without thinking "what the heck is this part" and "wonder how it is used down the line".

So I did some brute demolition with pliers, cutters and dremel disk cutter. Daria was not involved, since it is a very delicate process - one incorrect move with pliers - and bulwarks will crack. Bulwarks end up with no support when you are supposed to glue finish planking to them.

59e1002db1eb5_Foto2017-10-12200905.thumb.jpg.aef2889e61085c3bf642da50f3b280d0.jpg

Cleaned up hull, ready to move forward:

Phew! Will read manual more careful next time. Daria also confirmed that I am an idiot, and now reads the manual after me, to make sure I haven't missed anything. Guess it is a good thing in a long run ;)

Mike,

Very nice, I noticed the dremel beside the Proxxon I almost didn't buy one because of the built in battery. Love it maintains a long charge is very light can do heavy sanding and cutting. I use it more than my 3 other dremels and flex shaft.

Lovely daughter lets call it a co-operative build going to be a very nice build.

You are absolutely right having someone else looking over instructions.  Daria would probably have prevented this from the start.....😀

I told you Daria should be at your work bench!! She is right to check you, very important as it is her build (of course) Very nice correction though, well executed. Glad it didn't end in a new kit and starting all over ;)

There are more "traps" in this build:

1) markings on B19 are not for beveling, they are guides for gluing L11. And together they form temporary guides for drilling.

2) Waterways should be glued "upside down" (the glue goes on the upper - marked side)

3) Pay close attention to the right and left parts, sometimes they are intermixed on the plates (for example bulwark D2L sits together with R planks and vice-versa).
