Walter! You need to have a very good eye for such a small scale, I don't have them, but sorry... And Surprise is really a beautiful ship!

Hi,

It’s been a while.  I’ve been busy with the frames.  They are all in place now,

and it’s time to start working on the clamps and stern framing.  Thank you Aviaamator.

The scale is presenting a challenge.  I wear an OptiVisor most of the time while building.

Hi,

Happy New Year.  It’s time for a quick update.  The hull has been planked and now it’s time to start working on

the beams and gun deck planking.

Love it - very nice subject.  Cool to see small scales being built too.  Any particular reason you went small?  After reading the Phillip Reed books, it's amazing to see what kind of detail you can get at such small scale, yet have a model that doesn't take up as much space as a 1:64 or 1:48.

Mike,

Thank you.  I chose the scale primarily for space reasons and secondarily for the challenge.  So far so good but I expect to run into some interesting problems as the project progresses.

Hi,

Time for a quick update.  I played with some paint on the hull, and completed some more planking.

Very cool project you have here. I admit I was drawn in by such a small scale as I was curious as to what you could do with wood at those tiny dimensions. Impressive so far! The smallest I have gone with wood was a 1:150 Bounty model. It was a solid hull with minimal detail. It was a fun build but a bit to small for my comfort. Looking forward to seeing your Surprise come along!

Thank you EJ.  The scale is quite a challenge,  As for the wood, It's actually bamboo.  I mill the planks and timbers with a finishing plane.

Hi,

Time for a quick update.  More deck beams were installed and the top deck is ready for planking.

Hi Walter,

You must have small hands and eagle eyes. The boats are excellent as well as the rest of the ship, great workmanship.
