Hide wood

Looking for experiences with hide glue for deck planking? I've been using CA glue to lay the deck planks but you get one chance, and one chance only. This looks like it may provide a little time to move things around?

I'm finding that carpenters glue works much better than CA glue. I don't have experience with other glues but the glue I'm using seems to be superior to what I've tried.

Derek, when you say 'carpenter's glue', do you mean the brown stuff that comes in brittle slabs and has to be boiled up in one of those double containers with hot glue in the inside one and boiling water in the outside one?

Come to think of it, JBITW, is that brown stuff what you mean by 'hide glue'?

Brian,

Carpenter's glue is usually the PVA that's yellow in the bottle.    Hide glue is brown flakes and needs the double boiler setup like you described.

Ah, see? Shows my age, doesn't it? I remember my dad using the brown-stuff glue in the double pot! Me, when I first got into all this, I was using something called Cascamite, which I seem t remember as a white powder that had to be mixed with water.

Regarding how well hide glue works, I have hide glue residue on my work bench which has been there  since about the 1920's.    It ain't coming off unless I chisel it and I have no plans to do so.  This bench belonged to my grandfather who was a life long cabinet maker and the bench has stayed in the family.   He used hide glue for many many years.  But, he switched to carpenters glue, unless he was doing restorations of  antiques that originally were built with hide glue.    He taught me a lot and swore that the carpenters glue was as good or better and soooooo much easier.
