So she was a three masted SHIP, likely a BARQUE.

E1 or A1 classification.

 

This is fantastic info... thank you all.

 

The A-1 or E-1 classification is probably reflecting different periods during her career - the A rated are top quality and condition.  The E rating is a slightly lower condition and to be expected after several years of service.  Note that the 1 relates to the equipment (masts and such) and indicates an overall good quality for them.

Though unrelated to this thread, the Howard article mentioned above ("The Barque Rebecca at King Island, 1843-1844") is well worth looking up. It cost me $4 Australian to download. It is a great tale, comprehensively researched and well written. Shipwreck, marooned, survival all the classic elements.

Just to muddy the waters.....

Clydeships.co.uk has Rebecca as a three-masted ship. Then, when describing her fate adds "by which time barque rigged"!!!

The Howard article notes that she underwent a major refit in 1841.

Another issue is did the rig stay the same through the career of the Rebecca?  It was not uncommon for owners to change the rig.  The Beagle was changed from a brig to a barque when it was used for exploration.  Brig were often rerigged as brigantines.

Here is the 1842 Lloyd's listing for the Rebecca:

Now listed as a Barque, Class AE1, Sheathed with felt and Yellow Metal.  descriptions of the other changes in the column data are in the attached PDF.  The numeral .41 in a few columns indicates the year of that information - matches the rebuild mentioned above.

I think it makes sense that they recorded how she was rigged when she came into port.

If some yards were missing on the mizzen mast, and later reinstalled it wouldn't be such a difficult thing to do.

It also explains the record discrepencies as not being errors at all.
