HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello dear friends,
thank you for your feedback and "likes", I appreciate your support a lot.
Now I am working on decoration at the bow; mainly caryatides and decorative moldings. Sometimes it is not easy to adapt all parts together, so I have to create new ones and try again.

Thanks again for your detailed information Doris. I did not realize that the modelling clay was as flexible as you have demonstrated with the long bead-like sections after it has been baked.

A wonderful comparison shot with your two ships bow to bow.

Some of the pictures (or maybe all of them) I could look at for hours. Watching the beautifull sculpted golden ornaments I'm wondering... Are your hands also made of gold?

Your feathered assistant? Is that a good combo? I once had a feathered assistant and she "LOVED" paper and card! She was like a paper shredder and ripped every piece of paper in tiny pieces. Hope your assistent is better trained☺️

Hi Doris,

did you change your goldpaint since the SoS?

Jan

Hello Jan,

well, I use similar goldpaint, but it is still without weathering so far.  In the end, all pieces of decoration will be modified to look more realistic, I am going to use weathering and clear varnish on their surface.

My feathered assistant also likes card and sometimes pieces of wood, but she usually falls asleep under the huge hull and is not interested in nibbling the model. 🙂

I have not been here for a longer time, I have harder days in my life now, but ships and making their models help me to overcome it.

I continue with my favourite work - ship decoration and sculpting. I try to create it according to the Vale´s painting and relevant information about ship decoration from the 17th century. Plenty of interesting and useful information about real ships you can also find on Czech Modelforum, where is my main log with Royal Katherine and also a lot of professional advice from the TOP expert and experienced naval captain - Kpt.KL, who is my great advisor. For example:

Words fail me, Doris.  This is like watching Da Vinci or Raphael at work.   The more one looks, the more one sees in the details.

Beautiful work, Doris. I apologize if I missed it earlier in your post, but are you making negative moulds into which you press the clay? If so, are you carving those from wood?

Doris,

I can't believe that I have missed your updates since May. Just caught up (need to re-set settings) As Mtaylor just said "This is like watching Da Vinci or Raphael at work. The more one looks, the more one sees in the details." Indeed it is

And then, I widen fingers on my trackpad to enlarge your photos and become even more astonished !!! :imNotWorthy:

PS: As I have said before  - Yes indeed your SOS is beyond mere superlative descriptions - as well as this superb log.

Cheers,

Michael
