HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD

Recommended Posts

Thank you Nils, Amalio, Richmond and Rob, your praise and comments mean a lot for me.

Thank you all for likes and support as well.

I have just finished the panel with swords and other weapons from that period and also tried to make other hand guns according to real replicas.

Here is the result, enjoy it:

Very cool! Those weapons are a detail rarely seen on models. Adds another touch to an active ship.

Hi Doris,

Astonishing small detail. Beautiful!

I apologize if I missed this, but have you ever made the King's cypher or emblem for a cannon?

I was about to start on photo-etching these for my project, but your tiny guns made me think that there might be another way.

Best wishes,

Mark

Doris,

You are on your own level.  I don't think I have ever seen such detail on any model at this scale.  I just am in awe of your talents.

Looks like load resistors to drop the voltage and/or limit the current for the LED lighting on board, Joe.

Oh yes, I would like to make my model based on real ships from that period. The weapons are shown for example here:

I am going to make new and more accurate replicas of weapons for the great cabin so there will be some changes during following days.

Hello Mark,

Yes, I made them for cannons on the yacht Royal Caroline and Sovereign of the Seas as well. I used my favourite modelling clay (Modurit), the result is not bad, though I believe that photo-etching parts are more precise and look realistic.
On the Royal Katherine I am going to make these small emblems from modelling clay as well and hope, they will be much better than my previous. I will bring pics from the tutorial to you.

Here are some pics of my card cannons with clay emblems from the yacht Royal Caroline, scale 1/40:

Hello Tom,

I am flattered. Thank you. I'm sure, there is always opportunity for improvement and that is great motivation for us. I still try to learn a look for new ways, how to do things better.

Exactly, I use these resistors to limit the current for the LEDs and dampen lighting.

At last I have painted the furniture using oil paints and also made a trunk according to items from that period.

More information about the trunks is here:

I am also working on the Yacht Corsair ii (plastic kit in a scale 1/130), which you can see alongside the Royal Katerine.

You are welcome, Mark. It is not a problem to make tiny details and ornaments from this clay although in my opinion the photo etched parts will look better and more professional.

Some current pics from the great cabin - furniture is almost finished:

Now I will make accessories and new panel with weapons.

Fantastic...wonderful...marvelous..

I wonder..what would the cabin look like if the light were not coming from the open ceiling(Your over head lights), but from the LED's you installed?

Can you temporarily cover the roof and let us see what the effect will really look like?

It might be a bit darker and full of shadows....

Hello Rob,
you are right with effect of LED lighting; here are some current pics from great cabin illuminated only with LEDs inside. In my opinion, this looks more realistic and natural.

Hello G.L.,

Thank you for your kind words. I have already done crew members according to portraits of real people on my previous ships and I would like to continue with this tradition also on Royal Katherine.

For example here is the crew on yacht Royal Caroline (card model from scratch) in a scale 1/40. On the last picture it´s me.😊

Hello Siggi, that is fantastic and very inspirational masterpiece, thank you for sharing the links.

I am trying to make the Royal Katherine model in a realistic look as much as possible so it will also related to all crew members. I'll make portraits of  faces according to real people. All sailors will be dressed in period clothes, and officers will have wigs on their heads.

As I have already mentioned, I cooperate with the top expert on the history and construction of real ships and experienced naval captain - Kpt.KL. His advice are priceless for many people and I am very grateful for his professional help with my projects and possibilty to improve knowledge about real ships and everything around them.

Here are some of Kpt.KL posts in Czech forum, where you can find plenty of professional information about weapons, period clothes and sailors that I am going to aplicate on my model. You can use translator to understand, but I am sure, the following posts will be very beneficial and educational to you as well.

I have decided to make all weapons again and much better to achieve more realistic appearance according to Captain´s advice. There were created for example these types of weapons: smallsword, spadroon, hanger/cuttoe, broadsword, rapier, flintlock muskets, flintlock/doglock pistols etc.
And here is the result.
