Some light touch ups and then I will put on a protective satin varnish. The surface is sensitive to scratches.

Dry fitting parts before gluing is a good thing. This way I can see when adjustments are needed or how attaching parts are to be located on deck.

One example is the Samson post together with the bowsprit.

This area is a tricky one, several parts going together in various ways.

Also I find the space under the main rail at the bowsprit very tight for a final assembled unit to be pushed through.

Will look into some other build logs for inspiration of how-to.

  • 3 weeks later...

I swear our kits are different. My stern is made entirely differently.

Norwegian Sailing Pram 1:12 Scale. 2nd boat in the learning series.

In Dry Dock:

Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack. 1:24 scale. Model Shipways, 3rd in the learning series.

Not sure what'll be next, probably the Santa Maria by Artesania Latina 1:65 scale. Unless someone has a better suggestion for a beginner.

Pride of Baltimore. Model Shipways. Clipper used in the war of 1812.

Black Falcon. Mantua Model. 18 century corsair brig.

CSS. Alabama. E. Manolie? Can't read the font. Build in Liverpool in 1862 for use in the American Civil War by the Confederates. Steam and sail, sloop of war.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

A baseball cap my Dad wore.

To get some decent curve to the main rail I used regular clear tape and out it on the plans.

Same thing was done transferring markings for eye and bolts going into the rail.

From there I traced the outlines and transferred to the strips.

Doing both port and starboard at the same time I am somewhat certain of getting the same shape to the parts.

Using the plans I lifted the layout for the main rail, transferring it to the .5" wide strip and shape them there after.

Here they are in place but not finished nor glued.

This is the first time I am using vimeo, if this works I will continue use the media.

Feedback is welcome in this matter.

Thanks all

Bill, I used both methods.

I was fortunate that there very little differences.

What I don't like is the thickness of the material. It is too much "meat".

It doesn't look  proportional.

So I am getting to an end of manufacturing the main rail parts.

Using both the plans and yacht I feel I have got a good fit.

After the last part been cut and trimmed, sanding and pre-stain is next before painting.

I worked from Stem and Stern to get my parts correct.

I find rails quite tricky. Your approach seems to work well so I may give it a go next time.

Getting the hawse pipe opening is a tricky part.

Here the two britttania pieces are mirrored and on top of that, several angles involved.

Attaching blue masking tape to the waist, I measured 30mm on the plans and transferred the measurement to the tape.

This would mark the aft part of the metal part. Next was to measure the top and bottom of the opening for the hawse pipe.

Using the metal piece I traced inside of the part. I did the starboard which is on the plans.

5a761e9b47a5b_hawsepipe.JPG.ea3df76a3edd3dfa3293e0f149460bcd.JPG

Doing the port side was a little trickier.

But at the end I got the second opening right. Looking at the stem it looks like Bluenose has gotten eyes.:D

5a761e99bba9b_hawsepipeeyes.JPG.d968b22587df90245f9d7b314d0cca9f.JPG

Now I have the delicate job of drilling the hole for the "eyes".

It took some effort and meditation before I put the drill into waist for the hawse.

Port side is being worked on, using my home made template (masking tape) I worked slowly.

According to the plans the hole going through should have 2.5mm diameter.

I may open it little more to insert a tube, which is not necessary.

Doing so, I have been able to create an opening that I feel okay with.

It will be interesting to see how bad it is after removing the tape.

There is more trimming to do, but so far so good.

Long time ago my son was into Warhammer game, so we went to buy some characters for him.

A little project we did together, mostly him.

But in the box with brushes and dried paint I found this three piece set of files.

The grit is good enough for wood as well, which was really helpful to finalize the opening.

The files can be found in any hobby store selling Warhammer game characters.

files.JPG.15cc0c4f0300c2a7fdf71533256014fb.JPG From top to bottom; coarse, medium and fine grit.

A tool I like to recommend to all modelers.

Waist inside has gotten the second coating of white.

The waterways was painted with Valejo sky grey. It gave the deck and white a nice contrast.

First part of the mainrail was glued into place. Here it's important to make a solid contact all the way. I don't want to see any light showing through with the waist.20180204_210809.thumb.jpg.fac969e68850ee71b81e05c527c884ec.jpg

Additional three pieces for the rail was attached this evening. Using Titebond II and heat from my hand, the part set hard and fast. Even though I made scarf joint, they are now hidden under the new putty.4261.thumb.jpeg.b821d79b512b014444e672736e7a6aa4.jpeg

I can see a lot of potential use of this camera, which I can use both with my PC ( no issues at all with connection, Windows 10 recognized it directly) and my android.

None of the pictures are edited.

And here is the camera itself.

Had my Sunday all to myself, some fiddling and trimming and now the main rail is in place.

Really pleased with the result.

All the parts fit to a majority, some filling was necessary. This auto-putty is a pleasure to work with.

But takes some extra paint cover to the connection areas.
