HMS Victory by gjdale - FINISHED - Mamoli - Scale 1:90

Incredibly well done! I don't disagree with your decision to paint her, for the reasons you gave. In the name of consistency, she should be painted.

Or... you could chalk this up as a separate model and finish it up un-painted and display it on it's own....  (just sayin', is all ;) )

Thanks again guys. You're making me blush. Paint it shall be. (And no coppering Augie! ;) ) I've got several more of these little suckers to build yet - think I'll go with the Pinnace next.........once this one is finished, and a little more work on the rigging is done!

Wow, that holly wood is beautiful. Nice tight symetrical planking. Shes a work of art Grant.

I had the same, Dont hold it up to the light, with my peterboro. Working with such small wood with only a bit of sanding it thins unbelievably.

Painting is probably the correct thing to do, but it just so hard to cover such beautiful wood.

Seems that left index finger always gets the brunt of the #11 blade for me too, hope it heals quickly.

Looks fantastic, Grant.   I think Andy is right.. make it a separate model..  :)   Man, that is good work.

Thank you everyone for all of your very kind comments - I really do appreciate them and they inspire me to try even harder.

Much as it pained me to cover up that lovely Holly, I put the first coat of paint on her tonight and am pleased to say that I don't think it detracts from the looks.  Of course, this is only the first step - the exterior planking.  There is still a lot of work to do before she is finished.  I'll post further updates when there is something new to see.

Its sad to hear that paint hit that beautiful Holly wood but what must be done, must be done.

If I might, was there a reason for using holly if its just going to be painted. After turning to cherry wood on the DSotM I found it so much better (albeit slower) to work with. I'm wanting to do my MS Pinnace in either boxwood or after seeing your boat I now think holly. How is it to work with, does it hold an edge well? and I know your down under but where is the place to get holly and/or boxwood planking?

Thanks Mick, Ben and Keith for looking in and your kind comments.

Keith - the Holly is excellent to work with. It is very pliable - a light soak in tepid water and you can make pretzels from it. That was one of the main reasons for using it. I could have used box, but the stock I had was slightly wider and the Holly seemed just right for the purpose. I used box for the frames and it also was very good to work with. I get all my timber from Jeff Hayes at Hobby Mill - it's worth the extra cost of postage to have such wonderful material to work with. And don't worry, even with painting, it still looks pretty good (to me anyway!).

The Holly colour is so even on the boat it practically looks painted anyway.

I just hate covering beautiful wood. Hpefully the Pinnace will break me of that.
I'm not sure what wood Chuck used on his Pinnace, but I doubt it was basswood. It's just so even coloured, which in my opinion is what makes it so regal.

Seeing your hollywood boat, its exactly what I'm wanting.

That picture with your hand really shows just how fine the planking you were working with was. I can't even image fairing those frames. I just ordered some of the little longboat kits from ME. Some side projects. I've never ordered from Jeff at Hobby Mills, but haven't heard anything but good. I guess I need to start spending next mmonths hobby budget :)

BTW, hows the left pointer finger. Hope its healing with no problems.

And there we go, a brand new 100% scratchbuilt boat in the making, wow! I see not only the dead flat bulkhead, but even the 1/2 dead flat fore/aft of it, and of course all the fore and aft sections, now that's what I call attention to detail! B)  Excellent work as always, Grant :)

Thanks, Grant, I think I'm stuck mostly in a "gray area" rather than the dark side, as I plan to scavenge kit parts for most of my fittings ;)

Hi all,

Not much to report in terms of progress as there has been a lot of waiting for paint to dry recently. I've attached a couple of progress pics to keep you know who happy though. After painting the exterior of the hull white, I removed it from the building board and attached the gunwale plank inboard before masking up and painting the interior yellow ochre. The yellow extends also to a band along the gunwale on the exterior. I was surprised at just how light the boat was when I removed it from the building board - it was like handling a piece of paper! In between coats of paint I marked out the pattern for the cap rail and cut this from a sheet of boxwood. I've also begun preparing the thwarts.

Here are a few pics as she stands at the moment. There was a tiny bit of bleed under the masking tape that still needs to be touched up, and then a coat of clear matte finish to take the gloss off of the yellow ochre.

Really nice.  If you would have told me about the color combo beforehand I might have scratched my head for a bit.  But now that I can see it, it looks spectacular.

Happened to catch 'Moby Dick' (1956 version) last night.  Tex might want to build some spares as a whaleboat's strong suit does not seem to be longevity :D

Thanks Sjors, Kevin, Augie, John and Sherry.

Augie - in general I'm trying to follow the colour scheme of the actual boats, for which I am most grateful for the pictures taken by Sjors and Anja recently. I will be adding one or two touches of "Captain's Choice" though. :D
