US Brig Syren by svein erik - Model Shipways - 1:64 - 18 gun brig

Svein,

I would think twice about adding brass tree nails on the black wales. That contrast might be too much. Black treenails might be better, and I believe more authentic, even though they may not be seen very well.  Perhaps you should do a small section first, and if you don't like it, you could probably paint over them.

Just my amateur opinion.

Thanks for the liks

I yust finish all the treenail and the wales

I have also painted the wales and stern with 10 cotes ,but more needed for later

I need to get the plank under the wales on board and the garboard plank before I line off the rest of the hull

It is hard to tell at long distance, but you are having some problems Erik. Before you go further, may I suggest you replace the black tape with thread? This minimizes the thickness issue. I'm attaching a version of your photo with red lines showing roughly how the lines should go. Note that the lowest planks at the bow, especially the garboard, end earlier to allow enough room for the rest of the planking. At the stern the lowest planks widen at the stern post. Try again and play with the thread positions until you get smooth curves from every angle of view.

Have you read A Primer for Planking, pinned on this site?

Erik: there are so many things to consider when lining out. Please read the article (link below) to better understand what you need to do. Also, there are a lot of boat-builders in Scandinavia. Perhaps you could talk to one of them as well!

Hi Erik,

You probably already have, but study Chucks manual in depth. I read it 5 to 6 times and sometimes still picked up something I didn't see before. His photos show the order of placing the planks and where to end them to allow for the next one's. I wasn't very confident at this stage but got there in the end following the process outlines in the instructions.

Your model is looking great.

Cheers,

The planking looks very nice.  You did a great job lining out the hull.

Thanks for the liks

but Huston, I have a problem😲

I think I did some wrong with the planking, its Seems to me it going to get to narrow

there is 7 planks to fitt in there (about 2mm at the stem)

So do I take all the basswood strip off ore just leave it?

Erik,

Shorten the garboard back a bit, and change the shape at the bow to better follow the current run of the planks. You should be able to fit all of the strakes in that way.

Good progress.

Hi everyone,

I did resive corronades from shapeways to use on the syren,

but I did order the hole set with the sledge in 1:64 scale

but it Seems to me that the sledge is to big but the corronades is in scale

so I need to send a mail☺

price is 54 dollar vs 181 from cornwall

I am pretty intrigued myself by this 3D printing approach. How is the quality of the carronade barrels? Once painted is a 3D printed barrel comparable to a brass barrel with respect to precision and details?

Btw, you do a really good job on your Syren model! I love to follow the progress.

The answer Thomas depends on the 3D printing process. The machines that Shapeways uses are the highest quality. I am very impressed.
