Hi Nils

He looks like he ate too many pies, or is it a beer belly?

Keith,

next to the fresh-water barrel, this one is also one of the utmost important barrels on board....

Hi Carl,

the surface coating is a Clou product, "Ballenmattierung" for silk appeal wooden surfaces, normaly it would be wiped on, but due to the brush coating I used, it comes out a bit more "shiny", no problem...

Update :

on the deck outcut side i put the braces on that hold the 9 side gratings in place. The 7 port guns will be arranged between the gratings, with barrels tied up at the upper bulwark, and the carriages tightly rigged for non battle mode. The starboard guns will be pointing out through the gun-ports.

I am concidering if eventually I should show the sweeps in their oar-port positions, at least on one side....

Good morning my friend,

Its a great idea you have there Nils ! The life inside the ship its a great and not ordinary project. It looks like you have catched the real atmosphere inside the hull!  Its a very atmospheric build. I enjoy always looking your profi work, but at this modell am very anxius to see the end result... I guess it would be something very extraordinary!

Wish lots of fan

Christos,

thank you very much for your appreciative words, As the Amati Chebec was too small (1:60) to suit my intentions of the model, I decided to make "something special" out of the basic plan without making things too complicated....

I must admit, that the plan is not going much into detail, but I`ve studied a lot of chebec models on the web, and will try to adopt quite a lot of details I liked during this search. Also there is my imagination and improvisation which provides me much fun...

In scale 1:48 the complete model will be 900 mm long between bow sprit and aft-sail boom. It certainly will require quite a large glass case when finished...

Nils m- was there a specific reason for the overhanging deck / gratings at the stern? By the way the grating looks very neat.

Thank you Keith,

I unfortunately do`nt know why the stern overhang worked out this way with the actual vessels, and why this is performed as a grating. I`m building it after the ships that are shown with this design. It is required any how for access to the sheets and handling of the aft latin sail. Its one of the typical chebec design features...

Nils, its quite an attractive feature, its just a bit interesting that the original builders didn't just extend the hull length to give greater capacity and speed. I guess we may never know their thinking.

Keith,

Probably the lesson that the longer waterline gives more speed was not so known in 1753. Perhaps the aft grating was the place where the capt. took his late and undesturbed afternoon nap with the ships wake and the waters rippling down below, as she sails into sunset.... Maybe one of the fellow builders knows the real reason

of this overhang in this way...

Update :

made a sequence I was a bit anxious for all the time, drilling the holes for the 14 gunports.....hoping that the hull planks would not fringe out...

Solution : I bought a 8 mm diam. hollow tube drill with diamond splitters around the cutting edge and used this with my electronic hand-drill at appr. 2000 rpm....

first I made a small jig to set the vertical centerline and to find the mid position between the bulwark supports. On the outside bulwark I fitted / clamped a bit of scrap ply, flush contact with the hull planks in that area. Sigh of relief , it went well, wonderfull sharpedged holes

On the battle side the guns have a few degrees over horizontal, with upward pionting barrel. On the non battle side there will be shield plugs inserted with lions head decore from the outside bulwark. Those guns will be retracted with barrels pointing upward and stropped, out of action, just below the upper bulwark rail.

Think that the smaller holes for sticking the sweeps through can also be made in this way for clean cuts....

Hi Piet,

I`m pleased to hear from you again, must have been a feeling like cut off from the family with a broken down computer, but now you`re all set again....

Thanks for your appreciative words, glad you liked the progress since your last look in.

Nils,

What can I say the lines on this build are so smooth and clean they just flow one into another. I have watched this progress and am amazed at how simple you make a complicated build look easy. Kudos

Thank you very much John,

for your nice words, much appreciated.  Yes, it was because of the lines of a Chebec that I was adoring and just had to start building one......

Am now moving on to the next parts like deck supports / timbers for masts tackeling. The card template for the upper deck is in dry fit position...

Still need to fit the chimney tube for the stove exhaust over deck

Enjoy coming Christmas holiday and have a nice time..

Hi Dan,

I think we`re in the same alley there, having interest also in ships of other nations and cultures.....

I have in mind also do tackle it doing a Chinese trade- junk around 1930 or so, when the Chebec is completed

Nils

Hi Nils.

Sorry it's Off topic .

Will you be doing a Junk ?.

Looking at doing one as my next scratch build.

Did you get any plans or are you going to use the Amati plans or the Artesania Latina red dragon plans.

Regards Antony.
