Saw blades for Byrnes saw

Can any UK member tell me where to buy suitable blades for my Jim saw on this side of the pond? I have had no luck so far in my searches on line.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe his saw blades originate with any manufacturing company over there that makes screw slitting blades. Over here one company is Thurston. Hope this helps.

Thank you Thistle. I could buy direct from Jim Byrnes but I am trying to source blades either here in the UK or in Europe in general.

I appreciate your input though.

Mike,

Google search on the type, size, and tooth count and try setting your location in the search even if it's -USA (not USA).  The Thurston specs could be used as a guide.

It depends on what type of blade you want. If it's slitting saw blades then I uses this for most of my work - particularly slitting off planks for hull and deck planking.

I also have 0.6mm and 1.0mm versions of the same blade - from the same supplier. You can get similar blades with coarser teeth but I find 108 teeth are best for most uses.

 

Bear in mind the shaft on the byrnes saw is 0.5" diameter while these blades have 22mm bores. I made up a spacer (on the lathe) from an off-cut of 25mm aluminium bar.

 

If you are looking for carbide tipped blades then the only source I have found for small kerf (.040") blades is Byrnes Model Machines.

 

If you want any more details of the spacer I am happy to supply.

Mike this UK supplier has a large range, but again you will need a spacer. I have good experience of this supplier.

Thank you Mark but it was the finding rather than the searching that was giving me trouble!

Thank you Keith. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned carbide tips and I have just ordered from Jim Byrnes. I was trying to avoid this due to the postage costs but I gave in rather than waste anymore time. The slitting blade info that you sent will be very useful in the future and I thank you for it. I do not have a lathe but will search for the appropriate reducing washer at some point.

Carbibe blades are not needed for most model work, with the exception being thick hardwood stock.  HSS Slitting saw blades are more economical, available in a range of blade thicknesses, and safer to use for small work.

I agree with Ed re the use of carbide blades - I only use them for cutting larger stock (3/8 inch and above hardwood).

 

Jim has reducers available and the implication is he will make the size you want for $5. Might be worth adding it to your order.

 

Alternatively I can make one and send it to you.

I should have added that I try to preserve my Byrnes TCT blade by doing roughing operations with this TCT blade:-

Don't be fooled by the claimed thickness as this is the thickness of the disc. The Kerf is 1/10". That said it cuts cleanly if you don't mind wasting a bit more wood.

 

The bore is 20mm so you still need a spacer.

All sorted now. Jim Byrnes has kindly offered to send me a spacer with my current order. My TC blade inventory is now complete. My new spacer will allow me to use HSS slitting blades from Chronos, thanks Keith, when I need to.

Update: Unfortunately Thurston is no longer in business. The company they sold to will only sell a minimum of 25 blades. I guess the only interested in retail sales. 
I believes there’s a company in the UK that sells slitting blades that are used in the Jim Byrnes saw. The name of the company is Globus.

Their products are sometimes sold in the UK but I can't find a current distributor. However, they will supply directly.

 

Has anyone used their blades for Byrnes saws?

An American company, MSC Industrial Supply, has a UK division.  When on their site look under the two categories of Slotting/Slitting Saws and Jeweler's Saws.  You will find a huge variety of blade diameters, arbor hole diameters, tooth count and blade thickness.  Their catalog contains around 6,000 pages.  You can get most any tool or tooling you want from them.

They also have excellent customer service. Somehow I got it into my head that they carried Globus blades but I got no hits when I searched the name in their site. I used them for a looooooong time when I was working but haven't had anything for the last few so can't say what the 'cold caller' sales arrangements are now.
