For these planks, I’m trying to ensure they have a close fit at both the bow and stern.

Closing the gap- I’m finding this bit easier than I thought I would. Still working from the keel, I’m planking towards the other planks. As you can see from the photos, the second last plank wants to stay centered. I don’t want it to. So I use off-cut wedges to push it to one side. That leaves exactly one plank width as the last gap. Happy with that.

First planking complete. 23 planks per side (from the bulwark to the keel), with 15 full length planks left over.

Next- Lots of sanding.

Pretty good job for the 1st planking and it will make a good foundation, but have a big think about the 2nd planking before you start anything. You won't want to follow the run of the planks for that - i.e. NO sharp pointed panks.

I’ve given the hull a thorough sanding, and I’m quite happy with the result.

The transom plate snapped in half a while ago, but I’ve found after gluing it in place, it all meets up rather well.

I’ve painted the inside of the hull black where possible, so it doesn’t show up later.

I’ve completed planking the forecastle and main decks. Now I’m lining the inside walls of the bulwarks with pre-painted second planking.

A heap of spring clips hold everything in place until it dries.

I’m using Admiralty Paints red ochre. I love it. It goes on a real treat!

I’ve had to think about in what order I do things. I want the hull planks to sit over the side edges of the cabin facia, so it will need to be fitted first. But I also want the quarterdeck planking to overlap the forward and rear edges so I can sand them down flush. The transom sticks out sideways proud of the hull, so that will have to go on last.

So so there we have it- Quarterdeck planking next, then cabin front facia, then hull second planking, then transom. So I’ve trimmed away the quarterdeck bulwark guides from sections 8, 9, 10 & 11.

Ive been wondering whether I should laminate the facia and transom with left-over deck planks. But I’ll prefer to leave them as one piece.

Bugger. Looking back at these photos, I've noticed I've made an error in the left-most quarterdeck plank...It throws out the 3-shift pattern. Oh well. It will remain.

I'm posting these to my Facebook page as well, and one of my friends asked me a question I don't have an answer to. If deck planks are typically 21 feet long (1:64 scale length of 100mm), how long are the hull planks? I guess he's asking about the first planking, because it's the full length of the ship.

Should I attempt to keep the hull second planking strips to roughly 100mm? And if so, is there a shift pattern I should try to follow?

Ok, on to the second planking.

I’m finding the 1mm x 4mm walnut strip used for the second planking doesn’t like bending too much. I’ve tried nipping with planking pliers but I hardly get a warp.

I’m now trying soaking them in warm water for a few minutes, and I’ve clamped them to the contour of the bow. I’ll let them dry overnight and see how I get on.

Does anybody have any tips to assist me at this point?

Hi Jobbie,

I hate using walnut planking, even when soaked.

Started swapping walnut for Pearwood or, Boxwood if I can get it two builds ago.

Building up quite a stock of walnut. It doesn't even burn well.

End of moan.

Your build is progressing nicely, very impressed.

Will be following closely as I intend to build this one next.

Sam.

Hopefully the soaking will work. I've used the Amati plank nipper which seems to work quite well...

The third item down on this link - black plastic:

https://www.model-dockyard.com/acatalog/Manual_Plank_Benders.html

I know there are differing opinions on these, but I've found them really helpful :)

The other alternative (and perhaps the way that is less damaging to the wood) is heat... You could take a look at Chuck Passaro's planking videos (link below) as they describe this technique. Chuck's results speak for themselves!

I haven't tried this with walnut, so I don't know what your mileage might be. Hope that's helpful though.

I have those nippers, Rob. Usually, they do a fine job. But not with these strips. I’ll see how I get on in the morning.

Looking at the way the planks have already bent around the bow you should be fine when they dry out - there shouldn't be any "spring-back". If you still have a problem and you don't mind a half-hour drive I have a home-made plank bender that you can borrow - it works a lot better than the Amati one.

Well, after letting the planks dry overnight, they sprang back to half their desired bend radius. So now I’m trying to soak them and induce a sharper bend by using golf tees in MDF.

Going to great lengths to ensure the first plank of the second layer sits flush. Again, I’m letting it dry overnight.

I’m going to have to consider how I do this more efficiently as I move forward.

Wow. It’s been a year-and-a-half since I’d lay a plank on this ship! No real reason- I’ve simply enjoyed building plastic aircraft for a while instead. I’ve had health problems, too: One spinal disc replacement surgery later...

I cleaned up the garage and had to move the hull in the process, and I’ve suddenly found new motivation for this....which is odd, because I’ve been given aircraft kits for Christmas that really motivated me, also.

I glued four planks today and really enjoyed it. I’m back!

There’s a false prow on this kit. I can use that to cover any dodgy work, so I’m using planking screws on the central frame to hold the bent planks until the PVA glue dries. So far, so good. Only time will tell.

This is how I’m planning to complete the troublesome stern- I’ve planked the sides down to a point shown, and sanded them flush with the sternplate. I’m going to attempt to plank up to where the beechwood ends (yellow arrows), then cut/sand their ends in a line, and plank horizontally above that. (red lines).

Looks Great!  I am getting ready to start my first build.  I have seen other tutorials that show the planks being cut into pieces.  What are the pros and cons of doing mostly full length vs. sectional plan cuts?

Link to comment

Sziggy8, my understanding is that on the actual British Admiralty built ships, the external planks were about 25 feet long. 25 feet is 7620 millimeters. On my kit at 1:64 scale, that equates to 119mm (4.68”). Quite a usable length, really. For second planking, that should look great, I’d imagine. I’m not choosing to do that because:

a : I’m by no means an expert and my method is clearly riddled with errors.

b : I’m very much loving the kit but it, too, is clearly riddled with errors.

c : It’s too late, I’m committed now!

The ship models I’ve built so far have all been shorter in length than the wood strips supplied with them, so...yeah...full length planks. My next kit isn’t, so I’ll probably try sectional plank cuts for the hull’s second planking. The first planking’s hull planks have to align with the ribs, of course.
