Lou,

An old trick on tight bends with thicker wood... lightly cut some dados (I think that's the right word) into the wood strips.  The closer the cuts, the tighter you can bend it but you'll still need to soak and/or apply heat. You'll have to play a bit to find out the depth of the cut also.

The plank benders some places sell don't cut the wood, they crush it so it really doesn't work as well.

Not to my knowledge, but I'm not an entomologist. We do have our fair share of crawly, bittie, itchy, stingy critters so there is a possibility that one of them is red. :(

An old trick on tight bends with thicker wood...

Hi Mark

I have used that method in stuff where I wanted to create a radius for a cabin wall or stuff like that. Works pretty well on plastic also.

My tighter bends in the wood strips, were not the edge bending needed at the bow, but were at the stern, where the wood needed to bend very quickly to meet the counter. On those bends I used an old pencil style 25W soldering iron and the bends were very easy to achieve. The only problem was that I had to move the iron fast or it would scorch the wood. This happened a couple of times anyway but some scraping with a thin blade took it off.

I tried the iron on the last couple of planks that needed edge bending on the bow but it twas too hard to control. I may have been able to use a hair curler like some people say they use, or possibly the Model Expo plank bender with the larger head but I don't own either so I finally chose the alternative method saving that particular battle for later.

Later, after switching to the alternative planking method, I though about a small portable steam iron I own and that it may make a very effective edge bending tool. It's of course flat, produces steam, and the heat is adjustable. I may just give it a try on an extra plank just for future reference.

Lou, keep us posted on your steam iron idea. What mark was referring to is called Kerf Cutting.

All this talk of mosquitoes reminds me of a back packing trip in the Tetons a bunch of years ago. They were so thick they drove us out. Well that and the multiple snow fields we had to cross to get over the crest and we had no snow axes for arrest if we fell. One of the transverses was across a hill on a 60º or so slope and 2-300 yards across on a very narrow path. It was a very long slide ending in a small pond surrounded by snow. The next morning when we went to head back instead of risking it I discovered the mosquitoes had got me all across my shoulders where the straps sat. Two days of torture.

Two days of torture.

I know what you mean Sam.

The first time I took my wife back packing there really was very little in the way of "Ultra light" gear. After I packed up the gear I needed for the two of us for two days my pack weighed over 70 pounds! While I was much younger than I am now I had not carried that kind of weight since I was in basic training in the Army! I made it but my legs were shot, and my shoulders were almost raw. A mosquito could have landed on the pack and I would have collapsed from the extra weight. I took the pack off and for the next hour I felt like I was walking on the moon! With the gear I have now days I can do the same thing and my pack is not even 30 pounds at the trail head!

I will try and get time to try out the iron as an edge plank bender, possibly Sunday, I'm booked up tomorrow with an event, followed by a bunch of honey-do's. Monday at the latest.

Just seen your planking posts.   If you intend to paint the hull you have no problems.

If I am planking a "problem" hull I really concentrate on tapering the planks

above the waterline and then apply coppering or lots of white stuff below.

Not a masterpiece finish but it works for me and,  most period hulls had

underwater protection applied.

Keep up the good work.

Lou,

You are good to go, looks great second layer will fall into place. Looks like very little filler. On my first planked model I used so much filler it was bow heavy and had a 30 degree list to starboard.

Kudos nothing wrong with the planking, she has eye appeal very pleasing lines. Kudos:cheers:

Mosquitos are attracted by perspiration, after shave and perfume. I am a sweat hog, people want me in their area and see me as the human bug zapper (misnomer) I am the one getting zapped. This morning I retrieved the paper 20 foot walk from the front door returned and lathered on the hydrocortisone cream got hit approx. 15 zaps. I'll keep skeeters you can have grizzlies.

Thanks Orlin

On this model painting is a requirement rather than an option as there is so little known about the Providence that almost 50% of the authenticity that makes her THE "Providence" is the colors. Thankfully I won't have to copper the hull. One researcher suggested that the reason she was so fast was that she had a copper bottom but I pretty much discounted it as there is virtually no supporting evidence.

Works for me John. Mosquito's bite A LOT more people than Grizzlies do! Besides we don't have Grizzlies here in the PNW. At least none that anyone has found. But then they can't find the Sasquatch either.

There won't be a second planking below the wales. Above the wales is a plywood piece that will have to wait until the deck is planked, and it will be planked both inside and out.

I tried the steam iron on a few scraps of the same wood that I used for planking the hull. It is about 5 X 1.5 mm. I tried edge banding with the iron dry at first an it did OK. With some effort I was able to get a fair edge bend without the wood cracking but it was a close call. I next turned on the steam and was able to get much better results but I had to hold the plank much longer for it to cool off and hold it's curve. I then used a damp cloth over the wood and got the best results. I again had to hold the plank in position until it cooled for it to hold shape but I was able to form an extreme edge bend over a mandrel former without the wood cracking. I compared the bend with the last planks I laid before I gave up and went to the alternative direction and i could have easily finished the hull using the proper planking method if I had used this method to form the lower planks. It was able to make these bends without burning the wood or tapering the plank as it would have been if it had been the real plank.

Hey Lou, very nice job on the hull planking, looks good from hot and sticky Palm Coast, Florida.

No problems with skeeters, at least not with me 😏  They must have migrated to Craig's area.

  • 4 weeks later...

thankfully,  you won't be plagued with bending planks.  but you might be doing some tapering and nibbing ;)    the hull came out just fine........nothing that a little filler can't fix.   if you are second planking it,  I wouldn't even bother with the filler.......just sand till the contours are right.   you do have to admit though.....that is a very blunt bow.   what's even funnier {I think}....is that you can plank the same hull frame again,  and it won't come out the same.  heck........I've experienced that!!! :D   the deck should be a cake walk for you  ;)

Thanks for dragging my build up from Davy Jones Locker and Taking a look Denis.

I have not done much lately as #1, the wife took a pretty good fall resulting in a concussion, broken eye orbital, fractured rib and a ton of doctor visits along with pretty much having to take over all of the Chief Cook and Bottle Washer duties in their entirety rather than just helping with them. My day starts at 6am getting the kids off to school, walking the dog and trying to get at least the surface layers of ugly scraped off in the shower. It ends at ten getting the youngest off to bed and doing the dishes for the last time for the night. I then get a couple of hours to myself but I'm kind of out of energy to do boat stuff.

# 2 I have been procrastinating on the deck planking a little. Like the hull planking, I have never really done this the "Proper" way before and after reading up on plank staggering and such have not gotten sat down and started laying out the decks. I still have to finalize the deck arrangements, hatches and such, so I know where not to lay planks.

Once I get started I am pretty sure it will go pretty fast, relatively speaking.

As for wood filler etc on the lower hull I doubt I will bother. The contours are fair and I will be painting the hull in the colors of the period. The blunt bow is also based on several ships of the era, most notably the Sultana, and Hanna. I already refined the shape of the bow somewhat to more match a couple of ships I had plans for, and to better reflect a finer bow shape, but I didn't want to carry it too far in order to reflect the merchant origins of the Providence.

Again thanks for stopping in. Hopefully I will be getting back to work soon.

Really sorry to learn about your wife's accident, Lou. I was wondering where you had been. Hadn't seen you around as much. Now I know. Not going to "like" your post as that seems inappropriate given the circumstances, but want you to know you and your wife are in my prayers for a complete and swift recovery.

Thanks John, Craig, and Dowmer. I told her about your concerns and she says "Thank you."

It has been long enough now that the worry over the concussion is not really at the top of the list anymore. The broken orbital was determined to be serious by the specialist but not serious enough to risk surgery. She did say that her left eye may "drop" at some point and look smaller but only time will tell. She is of course concerned about her looks if that happens.

Most of the bruising and swelling is going away and I think I can quit worrying as much about being hauled away for domestic violence. The biggest problem at this point is the broken rib. I spent almost half the day yesterday going through all the hoops required these days to get some pain meds. She took one last night and was actually able to get some sleep. She also took one today with the idea that it would be nice to have a relatively pain free day but now she is dizzy and regrets taking it. In fact she just went back upstairs to lie down as it is making her so woozy. Oxycodone is some pretty powerful stuff. (I told her that having to look at me was probably what was making her sick to her stomach. She just gave me a dirty look and went up anyway) She has an appointment at 2:30 so it looks like I will have to drive to that as well. Don't need her driving while under the influence.

As for the work. I can safely report that the dog has been walked and the cat fed. I have attended to my daily ugly removal duties. Wife and I have been fed our morning coffee and food. Of course, dog had to test all the food to be certain that it was safe for us to eat! I will be doing the morning dishes shortly and doing the kitchen cleaning. It's weekend so no kids school duties but I need to take the older kid to the bank today to open his first bank account and have decided that dinner tonight is hamburgers. Quick and easy and keeps the Velociraptors happy as it is one of their staple foods, in a very limited list of what they consider edible.

Take care and start doing some modeling so that you can post the progress and I get to at least look at quality model work.

Compared to your family health issues, my present situation is just transient and to be honest rather minor in relation. You will be battling yours long after mine are gone. I do have to agree though that getting older is not only not for sissies but gets harder every year.

Thank you for the concern and well wishes Sam

She is doing fairly well and we were lucky this time. She really needs to learn how to stop a fall by putting out her hands like a normal person, while falling instead of stopping the fall with her face. Even though the eye bone is still broken it does not seem to be causing her much problems. Of course the swelling and black and blue face is going away so I can relax a little about possibly facing domestic violence charges. The only real issue it seems at this point is her rib. Only time can fix a broken rib and it seems like they like to hurt for the full time it takes for them to heal.

Pretty soon she will be back to normal and I will be able to stop being all kissy nice to her and return to making her life miserable again.

Luckily when she was at her worst she took the normal female stance and hid her face as much as possible by canceling all of her social engagements, (Not that there was really any time available for the first week with all of the extra doctor visits to find out how badly she had damaged herself) and making me do pretty much everything that involved public contact.

Luckily you live halfway across the US and not available for "Advice." With the present mood on male/female relationships in the US they would just burn me at the stake!:(

Thanks Mark

Compared to your family health issues, my present situation is just transient and to be honest rather minor in relation. You will be battling yours long after mine are gone. I do have to agree though that getting older is not only not for sissies but gets harder every year.

Hi Denis

Yes I have noticed your absence, but didn't want to intrude. I am sure in one of those journeys through your thoughts you will find the spark that lights the fires again and you will be off like a comet on something new and exciting. Just don't forget to post it here so we can tag along.

So now you will need to show us just how insane you have become, (After all I can't really get any more insane than I have been for most of my adult life) and reveal the magic of the keystroke and the finger of doom!:stunned:
