I found out that the entire lower bank of gunports (32 to be exact) had port scuttles.  I scanned the picture out of Anatomy of the Ship, rescaled it in Word and printed a sheet of them on card-stock

Seven gunport lids with port scuttles!  Making progress!

Seriously though, I’m learning a lot with this build.  I am taking the time to hone my scratch building skills for future projects.

I have several books from the Anatomy of the Ship series, including the Granado and the Bellona.  I intend to build both ships in 1/48 scale.

I also have the plans for the Triton which will be my next project.

There’s all 32!  Next step: painting!

I’m going for the Nelson Checkerboard, from 1805, so the top of the gunport lids will be black and the undersides will be red.

I painted the tops of all gunport lids black.  I then basecoated the sides and undersides of the gunport lids red.  I touched up the sides of the 32 with port scuttles.  I am waiting on the rest to dry so I can touch up the red on them, too.  After that I’ll touch up the black.

They decided after doing some research on her paint pigmants  that her yellow ocre is more of a peach/pink shade  than the yellow ocre we have all come to know,  and the black is less dark  more of a dark grey/black.

I think that I’m going to keep the model mostly as it is.  The colors will fade some when I weather and age it.  I always make warships look well used.

I finished touching up the black on the 32 gunport lids with the port scuttles.  They are mostly ready to install.  I just have to ensure that all of the eyebolts are clear of paint.

All gunport lids are now painted!  Next, I need to clear out all eyebolts and start pinning the lids to the hull.

I am going to use a couple of dark washes and then use dry brushing to highlight and fade the upper surfaces to give the model the appearance of shadows, depth and age.  It’s the same technique used for painting war gaming miniatures (which is how I learned to paint).

It works very well.  The biggest thing that you may have to watch for, is that sometimes the wood will absorb the wash, so be careful how much you use, and where you use it.

I have all gunport lids installed.

Upon careful review of the plans contained in the Anatomy of the Ship, I discovered that two of my gunports weren’t gunports, they were windows.  I adjusted the gunport lids accordingly.  I already knew about the two up front.  I made those from leftover gunport lids.

None of the windows were on the Mantua plans that came with the kit, lol.

I’m learning a lot with this build.

I posted up a question about the AOTS plans.  I think that 8 gunports on each side of the upper deck do not have lids.  I would appreciate any feedback on that.

If it turns out that I’m right and they’re not supposed to be there, I’m going to remove them.

Next, I’m going to redo the gunports on the quarterdeck.  I’m going to open them up and make some frames for them.

I removed the gunport lids from the waist gun gunports and modified the gunport frames accordingly.

I also marked out my cut marks for the quarterdeck gunports.  I drew them slightly oversized to allow for the gunport frames that I am going to make.

I’m not going to lie, the model looks a little rough right now, but it’ll look a whole lot better once I touch up all of the paint.
