One of these days I would like to sail aboard her on one of the longer trips when they move her from one port to another. Maybe Portland to Bremerton or something like that. I understand they do even longer trips from California.

Road trip.

That is on my bucket list. Sail on her on one of her transition trips from here to California or the other way around. Takes something like four or five days and worth every minute in my opinion!

Indeed...I looked into that and you can sign up as a crew member for many durations.  Alas....I can't currently spare the time away from work, but a month long adventure would be great...indeed.

Funny thing is when we came into town I saw her mast head from the road and on our way out of town later in the day we stopped in.  I was amazed you could drive right up to her and get out and walk around her.  No one on board cared and I even spoke to one of the working crew members about the overhaul and repaint.  Quite surreal...with her just sitting there all alone...wanting for an inspection.  I've enjoyed her so many times before and even visited her in Greys Harbor when she was painted up for the Pirates of the Caribbean.  The highlight of my day.

Love the Lady Washington, now if I could only finagle a job working on her at Port Townsend shipyard. :):D

Some really great history with the original Lady Washington and the PNW.

  • 1 year later...

I took a short several hour cruise on her out of Newport, Oregon. It is a beautiful ship, and it was fun to watch the crew handle the lines (passengers are invited to join in). We motored out through the channel and over the bar (we had an onshore wind). When we got out to sea (the first time for me in 40 years) they cut the engine and ran under sail. It was very quiet, just the sound of the breeze in the rigging. It was great!! I had always wanted to sail on a square rigger!

One note though. I have talked with a couple who took a several day cruise up the coast from port to port. The swells on the west coast run parallel to the coast line, and the ship was rolling in the troughs the entire time. Some evenings they had to hang on to stay in their berths. If you have any tendency for motion sickness a long cruise under those conditions would be torture!

I do get motion sickness (I was seasick for 3 1/2 years in the Navy) but the short in and out excursion ran head or stern to the seas and I didn't have a problem. I highly recommend it!

Gorgeous ship. Found out about her about a month ago. Has anyone built a model?

Lloyd McCaffery the famous miniature modeler did a stunning model of her in 1/96 scale.  I saw it once in a private viewing.
