Cutty Sark by Cuda1949

Recommended Posts

I received this hull of the Cutty Sark back in 2013. A friend of my son gave it to him to give to me. It has sat in my boatyard all this time. Back in March I started working on by planking the deck.

This planking was started in March as you can see there wasn't  a false deck. I had to put in wood block in order to support the decking. The planks were marked with a black magic marker. 20180313_190913_001.thumb.jpg.c5d64cb4a74d9098a1d11ecae9a93d0c.jpg

After the deck was planked I moved on to building the deck houses and other deck fittings. As I have no real plans I used the Billings plans and a copy of the Scientific plans. I believe that the deck house on the cutty was smaller than this one. April 2018 - June 2018

The deck houses are not glued onto the deck as I am currently working on attaching the rails and deadeyes. I also have the two bathrooms built and the winch and chain. This was completed on July 7, 2018.

After the glue dried on the bass wood strips I attached the railing and drilled holes into the bass strips so the deadeyes would be able to be glued in place.1938995895_20180811_211800(1).thumb.jpg.bf3a860900f4269884faafbfdf7066ef.jpg

Currently awaiting delivery of Longridge's books but in the meantime I have installed the deadeyes for all the masts. I have glued in the two chicken houses and the two bathrooms. I also installed the stanchions on the foredeck. 20180822_160847.thumb.jpg.d29887a4b16108f963f75bd3276b4116.jpg20180822_160855.thumb.jpg.6656186a60ab443028b254c759f09245.jpg20180822_160900.thumb.jpg.452642b6101527869db417c496654d55.jpg

You're doing a fantastic job bringing this model back to life...what a gift to have been given.  One thing, If I may...you might consider bringing those deadeyes up closer to the rails...l think you'll appreciate it when you begin to rig the shrouds...More to scale and such.

Great job.

Longridge's books arrived and after some investigation I have started on the masts, I also have made two pin rails with the belaying pins.  I took the advice from the books and made a stand to build the masts off from the ship. Much easier to work on.  The ship in the background is a sib of the Flying Cloud awaiting insertion into a bottle.

And so it begins. I have completed the build of the foremast. I am currently rigging the deadeyes on the upper part of the mast. Quite a challenge using small deadeyes what with my big fingers lol. Also received The Neophyte Jackstay what a great reference 20180923_164752_001.thumb.jpg.c739fa4c9ec5c54d5ea826d509ffa100.jpg20180925_164143_001.thumb.jpg.3cc4b7fbd28780282b379631d81ed5fb.jpgbook.

So I am starting to rig the lower masts but really did not have any place where I could work on the rigging as the table is too low and the ship too tall to fit on my work desk. So I built a rigging stand so the deadeyes are almost eye level.

So I have finished the rigging for the shrouds 6 on each side for the fore mast and main mast. 4 on each side for mizzen mast. I have glued the deck houses ( all except the one on the poop deck). So I guess I will start the spars although I am not sure how I am going to attach them to the masts. When I build by ships in bottle I drill holes through the mast and through the spar and tie it to the mast. I read somewhere that you can do it by using a piece of wire. Guess trial and error.  Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

So after some research I realized I had placed the front deadeyes and lines in the wrong position. I am in the process of  correcting this.

My question is I am ready to build the spars and I am not sure How to attach them to the masts? My first full sized build so any help is appreciated.

Two ways that I know of Al.  The best probably is it pin the yard to the mast in the proper location.  The yard should at least be completely ready for it's rigging or even pre-rigged.  The other way, and I'm not a fan of it, is to rig the yard, hoist it aloft using the rigging and them a spot of glue to hold it to the mast.  You might have a look at way Rob is doing his:

Hi Al

It depends on whether you want to do it as per the real boat or not, each yard had a metal truss of different shapes and slings to hold up, the different similar trusses can be seen in Ed t's young America log and there are pictures for most of the yards in Longridges Cutty Sark vol 2

Or of course you can do it like Mark said with a pin or glue, the amount of metalwork required for the sarks yards is  quite incredible as can be seen in eds log, remember also that originally the sark's yards were iron and had considerably less bands than a wooden yard

Hope that helps

Regards

Paul
