SMS Seydlitz by Canute, Cog, Stein Gildberg & RGL - FINISHED - Hobbyboss - 1/350

I have been trying not to interfere with your build Greg but is the picture of the real ship coaling the same ship? It appears that your ship has planking on all decks while the ship in the picture appears to have a painted steel deck. Same ship, different time? Different ship?

I had also thought of canvas but if they did then it was a special cut pieces that go around the boat davits and deck furniture. I thought that was somewhat unlikely. I had not thought of it being Linoleum. I thought that it was also interesting that the seams seem to be about every six or seven feet apart then after the four strips the seams appear to completely stop all of the rest of the way inboard.

Oh well I will go back into my watch mode and continue to wonder.

Lou

I’m  going to go with canvas as coaling was a dirty business and it would be a lot easier to clean up afterwards and cutting it to size would be easy enough. They were coaled frequently so the expense would be worth it. The photos look like canvas and every other photo shows decking amidships

I think we are witnessing the scale king of artistry  - next off I bet we will be seeing greg super detailing  at 1/1200  scale,    1/700  will be too much like a walk in the park.

Returning to the forecastle, I removed the home made chain stoppers and replaced them with Pelican hooks which are correct. Three are loose as I intend to have an anchor hanging down. You can just make out lines running to the capstan and bollards which will be run down to the torpedo net booms later.

That looks good Greg; some of those hull 'scrapes and dents' look very realistic.

Tried, wrong at this scale. Stepping back it’s not too bad. The decks would be hardwood in real life. So if wet would look almost black, if dried out, grubby. I can play with it a bit but if real it would be a like plastic deck. Using pastels with a fixer will lose the detail of the planks.
