She's really coming along nicely now Peter, looking good!

What are the four (I think) structures inside the crows nest? I can't make them out.

They are a sort of old fashioned cleats.

Ah, I understand. Is that what the shrouds are connected to?

No, the shrouds goes around the mast at the base of the crows nest. I believe it's for the rigging of the topsail and yard and presumably the top flag.

I'm just figuring out the drawings of the rigging. They are the worst I've ever seen. They show only the end result, not the steps how to get to the end result. I think it's the biggest mistake a kitmaker can make. They should help the builder not to confuse or frustrate them by bad schematics, drawings and a lousy manual...

Ah that makes sense. its obvious now 😎.

I know what you mean about rigging instructions, I think most manufacturers are the same.

Although they will all have to go a long way to beat these instructions I had with the AL Virginia; 😭

For someone who is a newbie at rigging you are doing a phenomenal job my friend. She looks great and your work is, as always very meticulous. Congrats on this Peter, you are doing so well.

Thanks for the encouragement Mark! Rigging is not my specialty but I try to manage...sometimes with a bit of luck and common sense here and there it usualy pays out. I won’t call myself a newbie but I’m not very experienced with rigging either. 😬

Fantastic work Sir, wonderfully neat.

Any reason in particular you went for a lighter thread for the ratlines?

Yes, first I make the running lines of a light colour and standing rigging dark. It was common in the past to do it that way. Second, I like the contrast between the dark and the light.

**It's a fiddling process...**

Hello mates!

In my previous update I started with the first ratlines on the shrouds and with this update I continue this process, but I didn't had a lot of spare time to work on the SM. However, it's enough to write this small update.

All the knots which are made with the ratline are called a "clove hitch". For the ends of the ratlines, it was custom to spliche the rope and loop it around the first and last shrouds.
I tried this technique and this was a serious undertaking.  I then tried an alternative way by making a clove hitch and then loop the endpiece of the ratline around the shroud again. Then I use my wrapping technique, which is a sort of whipping, to fasten the rope. In the end it was still a lot of fiddling work, but it was easier to do and the result looked similair.

Ofcourse it's much easier to glue the clove hitch at the first and last schrouds end that will be the end of it, but why would I choose the easy way out right? :D

So, after the test of the end parts, I continue with the ratlines...

I shoot the process how I make a clove hitch knot...

And we continue the process until I reach the top!

Phew...I made it....Now I had to finish the end pieces of the ratlines by the process I explained earlier....So a few hours later.....

This ship has only two shrouds with ratlines, I pity those....no I respect those fellows and galls who's building a Man o War or a frigate! My dear what a work will that be... :imNotWorthy:

It's the end of this update again....Next is the other side that has to be done on the exact same way. Wish me luck okay? :)

See ya!

Peter

It depends.... although you are more than wellcome, its a longer story. The invitation has to do with a video and a lady on it, that Katsumoto saw. So before you join us you have to see the video 😁...  and then you can  let us know 👿

Now that, Peter, is a definitive Masterclass on ratlines. Incredibly neat and consistent work.

I have no idea how you work so well so fast, I am sure that it would take the rest of us weeks to achieve anywhere near the same standard.

If anyone had seen your work in 1492 I'm convinced you would be accused of witchcraft! 👉🧙‍♂️👈

Well done Sir!

Has anyone got a thesaurus? I'm quickly running out of superlatives for Peter and this build......

**futtock shrouds - the wrong decision**

Hello my friends!

After my last update I completed the other side of the shrouds and ratlines, here's the result!

So, both sides are finished concerning the shrouds and ratlines. It was a lot of work, but I didn't know at that time how sailors entered the top.
Someone mentioned to me to make "futtock shrouds". By adding this sailors could enter the top! After contemplating with myself I looked at the drawings by AL. On the artistic representation of the model, a small ladder was shown made of rope, but it wasn't into the plans. I thought, let's do it, let's turn the ladder into futtock shrouds. Historically correct or not....and so I constructed some futtock shrouds....I was wrong!

Another person mentioned to me that ships of that timeperiod had an "open top". More like round rings of wood on a wooden frame. Sailors entered the top by manoeuvring themselves between the rings and enter the top. Ladders or futtock shrouds were non existing!

So....what to do....leave them on or remove them....what would you do....after seeing the next pictures?

So, futtock shrouds been made....I moved to the shrouds of the mizzen mast...

I suppose it all depends on whether the shroud meet your vision and narrative of the ship.

However, I like the look of the futtock shrouds, I would keep them. Are you going to put some on the other side?

Oh and as usual; superlative, exemplary and meritorious work as we have come to expect!👍

I think your futtock is fine. You see the main think when improvising is to have a realistic engineering reason. If you have a good explanation/reason why this idea even, could have been existed, then you are on the safe side. Then you are correct.

At the end I think you ll be the one to get the master degree my friend and you may even become a dutch professor!

Hi Peter.

.   I think I would agree. Weather futtock shrouds are the correct way or not I am unsure, but I completely agree with  'nikbud'. Simply go with what you yourself like. Personally I think they look perfect and if I was building the same model after seeing your method I would most certainly do the same.   All in all, one word 'Perfect'

Saving for: HMS Vanguard...Victory models.

finished: Bluenose11...Billing Boats... (sorry no log.

I've never seen anything like this on drawings. I would remove them.  But, that is my non-committal opinion.

Why not provide a few loose ropes like in the picture below.
