Proxxon opinions

Recommended Posts

I am going to the "dark side" and starting a scratch build in the next couple months :o

What are the opinions out there regarding:

  1. The Proxxon 3 speed mini drill press?
  2. Proxxon Mini Band Saw vs. Scroll Saw? (cutting frame profiles)

Thanks

Ken

Each of these tools is good for a certain work. The choice depends on that specifically you are going to do by this tool.

Bought the Proxxon drill press almost 30 years ago and it is still good in spite of some abuse.

I cannot comment on the band saw, but have their scroll saw. Somehow I always seem to fight with the scroll saws, perhaps I am pushing too hard, but I found that the cut is never vertical in material of any thickness. A band saw is probably better in this respect, but has limitations to the minimum radius you can cut due to the width of the saw band. I don't think it is a particular good proposition for cutting out frames at the usual model scales.

I  use the Proxxon Mini Band Saw for over 7 years and I don't think I would ever change it with a scroll saw.

The only weak point I can state is that, having a band saw, you might will need a scroll saw just to make the gratings.

But there is no need to buy one...

Thx

Thanasis, Can you please provide more information on the circular saw you have in the picture? Is it home made? If it is can you let us know how you made it and how it works?

After reading reviews here and at other sites, I'm going to opt for the Model Expo (or similar) drill press and the Ryobi 9" band saw. The cost of both ends up less than the single Proxxon band saw which is only slightly smaller.
