San Francisco II by Warnerade - FINISHED w/ display case - Artesania Latina - scale 1:90

Recommended Posts

Didn’t take long for me to get the new kit opened and unboxed. I figured ill present the contents of the kit since it seems to be a less common kit on this website. I was initially planning on doing a master korabel but the hobby shop called me with too good of a deal to turn down.

Upon opening the the box I was fairly impressed with the contents, especially after my recent build which was fairly basic. All of the parts are laser cut and pop out easy. I haven’t opened and closely inspected the die cast parts but at first glance looking through the case it all appears to be good quality. The sales came pre-sewn, which is a very nice touch.

This will be my first attempt at assembling and planking a ship, so we will see how it goes.

after looking at logs for the past two weeks, I have noticed a trend of people glueing the false keel to the keel for the first step in order to clamp onto their vice to hold the frame uo during assembly. In my directions it does have installing the false keel until after it is planked. Is there any harm from gluing the false keel on now?

As stated, first time building the hull so I am sure to have many questions.

This was also my first ship. It will be easier to plank the hull if wait on the false keel. Also it is a single planked ship and the wood is thick and hard. I suggest an electric plank bender. Best of luck.

They must have changed the kit in that regard as well, the deck boards are single planks but the hull is double planked. I am investing in a plank bender though.

Got a little progress tonight. After I filed all of the pieces down it all got together incredibly well, mich better than I was expecting after looking through another build log. The directions give a step by step pictorial on how to assemble everything. C3CFDFEB-256C-4EE7-96EA-B4DCA662D1F6.thumb.jpeg.22b49983b6674fe48d9b70e174fd2edf.jpegEB2DCD4A-F852-45E5-AF08-2B293F9B3E02.thumb.jpeg.db432e3b3119ee89176804faaae8be48.jpeg88DC8A4C-DBA8-4852-8D2F-5572D6315EB7.thumb.jpeg.404c363ab68760f4746d729dc867a37f.jpeg

Made a little progress this weekend. Got a majority of the fairing done and when it came time to plank the deck the directions say to just lay the planks down and pencil in the deck lines. I did this on my previous build and wasn’t happy with how it looked so I decided to cut the pieces individually for a more “authentic” look. I decided this after I laid down the first plank and the glue was dried, of course.

The deck is completely planked, about halfway through I decided to work smarter and picked up a few materials to make a cutting jig for the planks. I didn’t have time to get any pictures of it but I will post it eventually. Time ran short before I had to go to work.

The kit did not come with filler blocks so I went to Menards and picked up some small blocks of walnut. Between my dremel and the soft nature of the wood it didn’t long To get the contours just right

While the glue for the planks was drying I decided to get started on the cannons and the long boat.

I will have the bulwarks on tomorrow, and then hopefully I can start planking soon

This is not the one I made, but I stumbled across it on Instagram and pretty much copied it. I just cannot seem to find the paper scale for mine. A4F79711-40A6-491F-92D6-A6D9B1D9D692.jpeg.91fc8e8be8ead427b9b9d5068c8d1bf2.jpeg954B7FB5-8FEC-4C3C-9D66-8314C1A35B7F.jpeg.dd4631dde39839f0c6debd3a865e433c.jpeg

Try a fabric or dress making shop they usually carry paper or cloth tapes. That could turn into a little weekend side project.

I didn’t think about that, I will definitely look into that this weekend.

The bulwarks are on and its ready to plank after a little more fairing.

Progress is coming along at a snails pace it seems like, but I have the inner bulwarks planked and I have been working on the long boat while the glue dries. This long boat is my first attempt at planking anything, and I can only hope that the few things I learned on it carry over to the ship.

I finally got started on the planking. After laying down the first line my initial thought was it wasn’t that bad, but I’m sure as it progresses and things need to be filed and sanded for proper fit I’ll be cussing up a storm. I also managed to finish the long boat and the cannons, and got started on the grating. With my schedule it’s easier to find time to do small things for a little bit, it was hard to find time to actually sit down and attempt the planking.

For the most part, the cannons long boat and grating all went together as easy as the directions make it look. The only issue I had was with the grating and some of the serrations not lining up, causing there to be uneven squares, which actually made it a pain to fit together. My solution was to file a 45 on top of each serration that was facing down. It helped the pieces find the groove much easier.

I also made a small (but crude) modification to the long boat. As far as I could tell the directions did not call for a working rudder, so I found two eye bolts from a previous build and cut/glued the ends to the rudder and then glued bent brass wire to the stern. It’s a little far away from the boat itself but overall I am happy with it.

Adding the pintles and gudgeons to that rudder might be a small thing but you just made that ship your own. Great idea and nice work.

Does anyone have any experience with the various oils used for finishing? I found a previous build of this ship and the gentleman used Tung oil and the finish turned out spectacular. I asked my dad about it and he said that danish oil might give me an even better result. Just wondering if anyone can weigh in on the topic. I already started covering a few items with the tung oil so I believe I am committed at this point but I am curious for future projects and my own curiosity.

I am considering starting over on the barrels. I had the thought after, but it may have looked better if I took my scalpel and placed a few slits along them for the stain to sit in and give a more authentic look.

The port side is files somewhat smooth up to this point and the starboard side is not. I think in the future I’m going to file/sand smooth after every couple of planks rather than halfway through. What a chore lol

Below is a before and after pic of one of the items tens I used Tung oil on. 18219545-374A-4585-93A1-EDADB9765F91.thumb.jpeg.03c4d194b5cfda5c1b93c85aa42fae56.jpeg13A7DFCA-4F5E-4FA6-B9B8-B9F5D42A25C3.thumb.jpeg.eaea870afc141d8a080bb5fe17374c3a.jpeg3E2B515D-2B00-4BF1-9D16-071CD4E2A4B4.thumb.jpeg.8d4a0fc15f2bbe0510595a8d848634bb.jpegEB6B06AC-B007-42E6-B7B1-F00867F7CBAE.thumb.jpeg.ac518b2fb91eee9cad0ebb466fcde8fa.jpeg4BAD3301-F92F-4417-ACC2-0903DD439317.thumb.jpeg.ed1f2fe8c269bdd1eeec7371ad83a351.jpeg

I appreciate the advice but I think I’m doing just fine. I have read plenty of “how to” guides, and for my first time planking each plank is getting better and better as I go. My biggest issue is the glue, it expands about 3x while drying so despite using minimum it still shows through. But it also interdigitates very well so I know I am getting solid fixation. It is a double planked Hull, and this first layer is fairly thick and hard to work with (especially for a beginner) but the second layer is .5mm. The rudder attached below was just finished with the same planking, by the time o start the second layer it will look perfect.

My biggest struggle has been cutting/bending at the bow. But it’s coming along

Hi Warnerade. Just come across your build log. Sorry if I forgot to say hi to your addition to my post a while ago.  I am still reading up on techniques for future reference as well as finding out what I could have done better.  Firstly I kind of wish I had waited 2 years before choosing this kit as a present. I have wasted many months figuring out how to make the gun carriages never mind the boat and the channels. Like Y.T. mine were very crude metal. The photo etch parts, pre-made channels etc kit parts look so much better now. Building my kit in the living room wasn't a great idea either, too many distractions never mind on-call interruptions. You seem to have made good progress with the planking. My version came as single plank hull using 2 X 5mm strips. Luckily I had plenty of 1 X 5mm strips to double plank instead. Even 1.5 mm lime was hard to bend and shape on my first build. If you find you need to change your mind you will find it a lot easier with 1mm thickness doubled. Your ships boat does look very impressive. I didn't use any wood stain or oil on my build. I have only added a coat or two of varnish. Good luck with the rest of your build. I look forward to seeing how she progresses.

Thanks, I will admit the 2x5 planks are hard to bend sometimes...they are not very consistent as far as the quality of wood. Some bend incredibly easy and others are very stubborn to the point where even after soaking/heating and drying within the jig I made they would not hold their shape. I only managed to break a few though, although I will admit a few would have been better off breaking and trying again lol.

The same material that is covering the rudder and the small cabin, .5x5 veneer planks, will be used to cover for the second layer of planking so I will be using some wood filler to fill a few gaps and then cover with a much better/easier/better looking layer.

The oil adds a nice touch to it. So far the deck is just varnished, but I am planning on covering a majority of the other surfaces with the tung oil. I have not decided if I want to spray the deck with a poly or not just for an added layer of protection, as the tung oil says not to apply over any previously varnished surfaces.

Thanks for the kind words, I do like the kit so far...everything has fit together nicely. Although for some reason, my kit came with the poster of the current model AND the older model. I must say I do like the color scheme of the older model and wish that I went with that scheme which includes more natural colors...the new model has a lot of things painted black/red. The sails also have a more weathered look to then, mine are almost bleach white with the newer model

Finally got the first layer of planking done. Just have to glue on the keel and then use a filler to touch up a few spots around the first few planks and I’llbe able to get started on the second layer of veneers.

Spent most of my free time lately workin on a jewelry box for the girlfriend, but today I was finally able to make some headway on the planking and the deck/inner bulwark coated in the first layer of tung. It’s starting to really come along.

After all of the holidays and a crazy work schedule I was finally able to get the second layer of planking completed and a nice thick layer of tung oil has been applied.

For future builds I think I will seek out kits with only 1 layer of planking. The thicker planks made bending more difficult, sure...but overall I’d say they were easier to work with. The .5mm thick planks seemed to crack and flake off when filing the edges fairly simple. But I’m very happy with the results nonetheless.

For application the tung oil I spread on a very hefty coat and let it sit for 15 minutes, making sure the entire surface was moist and didn’t soak it all in/start to dry. At the 15 minute mark I wiped it down. The plan for now is to let it dry for 3 or so days and then apply another layer.

Can anyone guess where the sponge applicatoractor that I used came from? 😂

For some of the details of the ship Artesania Latina sells microshapers to actually scrape away some of the wood for the desired shape. I was pretty skeptical at first as I saw it as just another way for them to make money but I caved and bought them. After working on some of the trim work I’m happy with the decision to buy them. I think it adds a little extra that will never be noticed by anyone but me. Lol105B9993-B67C-4241-A5EE-5C7AE6160210.thumb.jpeg.54dce9136395cdd688572a0e6be208e1.jpeg

this step definitely required some fitness as putting too much pressure would just cause the wood to splinter instead of shave.

Slow progress these days, but in order to speed things up I purchased a small 2” table saw to start cutting pieces to length. Best 30 bucks I have spent in a long time. The directions in the new and updated kit has the Wales and trim painted black. After reviewing many logs of the previous model where they were not painted I decided to keep to this style. The Wales are stained with a cherry varnish, and the rest of the trim around the boat will be as well.

Just a small update. Bending the side bumpers with the taper was a challenge to figure out, I cut a piece of 2x4 with the vertical curve of the hull and then placed the pieces in there. I filed a small leftover plank at an angle to fill the space while bending. Some complicated/creative clamping.

im really liking my decision to not paint the wood. E6A1E851-4FB0-4E2D-BDD3-0F7AC73D9B08.thumb.jpeg.5148427502de45f352c36ae299c3c838.jpeg28BFEDB4-8727-465E-AC40-E48EC3C18B0A.thumb.jpeg.b4c38c76ed0b904b3e08fcf03745f0fe.jpeg7B4001B0-47C5-4E7C-9EBA-6D845B946808.thumb.jpeg.3a9707c328496881247c8cd66de80763.jpeg910CE43C-1D5E-467D-89A8-FB3E5EBB9578.thumb.jpeg.95887d0d8b465ac631ca0d24ab121790.jpeg9E30E739-6E79-4B4D-AF87-1594091A2666.thumb.jpeg.34254e79d74f125576b5b07cca83e82f.jpeg

amazon has them, they really do add a nice touch. Although slightly tedious at times.

Here is the link for one of the kits, the other one is "model kit A" and a link should be somewhere on the page

Starting to put the finishing touches on the outer railing. The running rigging gets tied around a few places, so I decided to reinforce the stanchions with small brass pins. Made the alignment easier to measure and plan a well. Increased the time significantly but I think it’ll pay off in the long run.

Progress has slowed down immensely this month but I’m still trucking away slowly. I had to take my medical board licensing exam, small vacation to dallas, and I just found out I’ll be starting residency in Detroit next year. I’ve also started some small side projects including a live edge table for the new home.

Not much thought has gone into any customization of these steps lately, other than not painting everything black I’ve been following the directions pretty close.

Working on the gun ports now...silly me forgot to account for the angle of the bulwark and the inside of the gun ports don’t line up. So for the rest of them I made the side pieces more of a  rhombus instead of the square and they lined up perfectly. Probably going to pop that first one off and redo it.BEA1ECF0-25A8-4B0D-B001-F69F5E7E4D34.thumb.jpeg.6b1cda67eb7d4da3d87dc7c6082d068f.jpeg
