I've started marking off the hull for the nails. With the planks being only 1/32" thick I could put a light on the inboard side and see where the frames are.

Here is the start of the monofilament being placed in the holes after dipped in glue. A single edged razor is used to cut them off after the glue has dried.

I then sanded the nubs with 320 grit sandpaper and applied a coat of wipe on poly.

Here the starboard side has been completed.

That looks like some awesome work Rusty.  I hope mine turns out something close to that.....   😄

How many times did you go thru that 1/32 planking?  That's one of the things I'm worried about when I get to that point.

Keep up the good work..

Till next time.....     😎

Awesome. Great work. A bright light shining through the hull and not a hint of any light shining through a seam in any plank. Ive got a long way to go to reach  such a level of craftsmanship.

Thanks Joe,

How did you maintain any semblance of placement of the holes even with the ribs back illuminated?

With the light shining I would mark each frame. Once they were all marked I would go back and adjust any mark that was out of line.

Thanks for the kind words Steve. The area that was the most problematic was where the butt joints meet on a single frame. Fortunately if I did drill through the plank and miss a frame most were under the floorboards or seats. If I did go through and I thought it might be seen I pulled the monofilament back flush, sanded off any chips and put a tiny spot of paint on the monofilament making is very hard to see.

Hi Rich. I wish I could say that the entire hull was free of any light shining through. I still need to get better.

I got distracted from doing the hull and switched to the floorboards and platforms for a minor diversion.

The diversion to the floorboards continues.

The large boards seen in the last post were one piece each. The center board and two outside boards have a rabbet along their edges.

They were glued together with a rabbet on both sides. The outside planks of the floorboards only have a rabbet on one side so the

inboard side needed to be sanded down to fit.

That looks wonderful!  A really nice job with those.  The thicker floorboards can be tricky and you made it look easy.

Thanks Chuck, Just heat, bend, check and repeat as necessary. Works like a charm.

The platforms were sanded and notches for the frames cut. This required many test fits until I got a fit I was happy with.

DSC00099.thumb.JPG.3b96a4e28f6e94276abeaf3f6a13e7ff.JPG

The risers have been sanded, nails applied and a light coat of poly added.

DSC00102.thumb.JPG.0269379b7e4718b764f82f20ab6692d4.JPG

To place these I used the same method from the barge model.

A T square was made from scrap and the height was taken from the plans and transferred to each frame.

This was a test fit of the risers prior to marking off the bolt locations.

The starboard side installed.

You can also see the completed thwarts above. They were assembled from two pieces to again give a nice uniformed rabbett.

Here they are before being removed from the sheets.

And the thwarts sanded to fit but not yet glued in place.

The mast thwart iron work has been completed. Supplied 1/16" x .025 brass strip was used to make the

three straps needed to hold the mast. I bent the two straps around scrape wood the same thickness as

the thwart. Holes were drilled with a #74 drill bit. The last iron strap was bent around a 3/8" dia. drill bit.

DSC00109.thumb.JPG.3808a010227098443f2643ed481bca78.JPG

All the thwarts have now been glued in place. Next I did the seats in the cockpit.  The seats are laser cut in two layers just like the thwarts.

The sides needed to have notches sanded in them for the frames just like the floor platforms. I got carried away and forgot to take pictures

of that. Here is the finished result with many, many, did I say many coats of paint.

The windlass, supports and bars have been completed and are now in place. I used a x-acto blade and files to complete the bevels.

The ends were trimmed and then sanded to shape. A little at a time to keep them equal and a good snug fit.

The six knees have been sanded, painted and placed. The two fore knees have

some sharp angles and thankfully Chuck supplies extras! Also the belaying pins

where shaped and placed in the thwart.

Rusty be VERY careful working around the rudder after it is installed. I broke mine off twice. Finally I just removed it and set it aside. I will reinstall AFTER it is on it’s stand. Your build looks outstanding. You might want to install your horse back aft at the same time as your rudder, don’t forget the block.....experience talking.😭

Jim Rogers

That's great advise Jim, thanks. I've been the "victim" of a broken rudder or two on previous builds and still haven't learned from it!

Hi All,

Here is my first update on the Medway Longboat.

I didn't have a huzzywutchet but I did use my Byrnes table saw. I set the blade height and did a test cut with scrap wood from the keel billet.

This is looking great, very clean and tidy looking.

Can i ask though, what is a huzzywutchet ? Ive googled it at and theres only 1 result on google, which is this thread.
