That would be OK except I don't want to still be paying taxes 900 years from now!:blink:

The first plywood plates are on it.

Strange way of working.

Because there are 3 layers with glue between it I had problems.

I have to soak the wood to bend it and yes.....it let loose.

But I had some spare plywood and I had to use that.

So a little scratch building also.

I know that there are a few caps in it and it needs a lot of filler and sanding but that's oke.

First I can go omg with the planking and try to close the hull.

Most plywood is not water resistant and the glue will, as you found to your dismay, disolve leaving you with loose layers. You could, to make it fit better with the lower or upper strip, add some overlapping plywood behind the strips. That would increase the strength as well, and lessens the filling and sanding

did you fare the frames first?   if this was to be R/c capable,  the outer hull would need to be fiber glassed.  I just get away with using a resin,  since I don't plan on putt'in 'em in the water  ;)

those panels.......never liked them.   I agree with Jan......if it were me,  I'd plank the whole thing.   figure where the screw tunnels are and go from there ;)     sometimes,  the laser cutting melts the glue between the plys.........had that happen with the bulkheads on a few on my models.  I just glue 'em back together and move on.  she's look'in good Sjors........keep up the good work! ;)

BTW - is it as you remembered it last?

Well here you are!  Happy New Year Sjors to you and Anja.  It seems you are already at the bottom of page 3, but looks like still plenty to go.  A nice change in subject matter, curious how these modern ships go together.

Cheers,

Jason

Hello Sjors,

I am new to this site and I have been sifting through the various builds. My close friend has asked me for some help in completing his build. He is also building the Smitt Rotterdam, the only issue that we have with this build he started it about 14 years ago in a 1:50 scale scratch build from plans. Unfortunately he has lost the plans. That being said he has the bulk of the vessel complete, as you can see from the picture. We are trying to get some idea of the furniture on the decks so that we can realistically replicate this vessel. Would I be able to impose on you for some of the details as you get further into the build. I do realize that your scale is  different from the one we are building. We would just like to be able to get some dimensions that we can modify and reproduce. Any assist would be much appreciated.

Regards Gren

Hello to you all and thank for all the likes.

@Jan,

I think you are right that it was better to planck the whole hull.

I did not and there where some strange shapes now.

But with a lot of sanding and filling it should be all right.

@Denis,

Of course i fair the frames.

The hull is closed so sanding and filling will do the trick......

@Jason,

Welcome and for you also all the best for 2019 also from Anja.

It's totally different for what i have done but maybe it’s good for me.

Maybe i can found my mojo back.

@John,

It looks if it goes fast but there is a lot to do.

When i have to paint the hull ,i will try to airbrush it......

That will take some time.

And then the rest of course.

I think i will be busy for a year or something like that.

@ Gren,

Your friend build a great hull!

I can only wish that mine come close to that.

You can take a look at 2 other,Dutch ,forum.

Modelbrouwers.nl and modelbouwers.nl

By the search functions just type the name.

If you have to wait for me it can take a while.

Sjors

The hull is closed and it is now sanding and filling time.

Anja was asking where the pictures are.....

I think I gonna be old 😂

So here are the pictures.

On the first you see the bulb in shape at one side.

The other one has to be done of course.

Then the planking and filling.

Now it is time for primer.....sanding...filling.....primer etc etc.

Thanks Kevin and Marcus.

@Kevin,

I do my best to let it look great when she is finished! 🙂

@Marcus!

I have to do the same thing at the bow.

So another sanding project.

Hi John,

I don't know if I'm crickey....😶

And it looks if I have done a lot but don't forget that I had 3 big sheets of wood what covers the hull.

So there was not a lot of planking to do anymore....just enough !

Maybe strange question but what do you mean by bee's knees?

Never hear of it .

Maybe you can use the Dutch langue to translate ??? 😛

The bow section is also done.

The blocks are glues and shaped.

Now a little stern and primer time.

But that will be for next week I think.

Picture time.

After almost 2 weeks of sanding, filling, primer, sanding, filling, primer ,sanding, filling and primer I think I have to quit sanding otherwise there will be no more wood left to sand.............

There are a few little imperfections but that's for later when I will put hee real paint on it.

I think it's gonna be 3 layers so....

But there are a lot of things to do before I can paint her.

Time enough to do.

And of course the pictures.....

Thanks Piet and OC.

Also thanks for the likes.

The trusters don’t want to do it the easy way so i’m busy to make them in one line.

One of the propellors is touching the case......

Then a question.

The propellors,what kind of colour do i give them.

Gold?

Copper?

Black?

Maybe Andy (realworkingsailor) knows it?

I am not totally certain about the Smit Rotterdam, on many ships the bow thruster prop looks black. But I do know that many ships use a stainless prop as well so that would add another color to your possible choices.

I guess that Smit Rotterdam had those copper coloured props. Still looking for a pic....

(which turned in something else due to heavy use, so: 'do you build 'as new', or 'at the end of her life'.

Here is 'new', unfortunately in BW-photography :)
