1759 - Keel of HMS Victory (100) laid down at Chatham Dockyard

1805 - HMS Champion (24), Cptn. Robert Howe Bromley, and consorts engaged a French flotilla off Fecamp.

1810 - Boats of HMS Belvidera (36), Cptn. Richard Byron, and HMS Nemesis (28), Cptn. Ferris, took Bolder (8) and Thor (8) and destroyed a sloop near Studtland, Norway.

1947 - First Navy all jet squadron (VF-17A) receives its first aircraft (FH).
1948 - USS Putnum (DD-757) evacuates U.N. team from Haifa, Israel and becomes first U.S. Navy ship to fly the U.N. flag.
1950 - USS Boxer sets record crossing of Pacific to bring aircraft, troops, and supplies to Korea at start of the Conflict
1958 - USS Nautilus (SSN-571) departs Pearl Harbor for first submerged transit of North Pole.

1801

HMS Jason (36), Cptn. Hon. John Murray, wrecked on an uncharted rock in the entrance of St. Malocs.

1813

USS President (44), John Rodgers, captures British ship Eliza Swan.

1815

Reduction of Gaeta by HMS Malta (84), Cptn. William Fahie, and HMS Berwick (74), Cptn. Edward Brace

1813- Sailing Master Elijah Mix attempts to blow up British warship Plantagenet with a torpedo near Cape Henry, Virginia.

1915 - The steamer Eastland overturns in the Chicago River, drowning between 800 and 850 of its passengers who were heading to a picnic.       
1944 - Following 43 days of naval gunfire and air bombardment, Naval Task Force lands Marines on Tinian.

1963 - The iconic Bluenose II was launched in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The schooner is a major Canadian symbol.

2009 - The MV Arctic Sea, reportedly carrying a cargo of timber, is allegedly hijacked in the North Sea by pirates, but much speculation remains as to the actual cargo and events.

1609 - The English ship Sea Venture, en route to Virginia, is deliberately driven ashore during a storm at Bermuda to prevent its sinking; the survivors go on to found a new colony there.

1779 - Amphibious expedition against British in Penobscot Bay, ME
1898 - Landing party from armed yacht Gloucester occupies Guanica, Puerto Rico.
1934 - First President to visit Hawaii, Franklin D. Roosevelt, reaches Hilo on board USS Houston
1943 - Launching of USS Harmon (DE-72), first ship named for African-American.

1956 - The Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria and the Swedish ocean liner Stockholm collide in a heavy Atlantic fog off the island of Nantucket on the New England coast. Fifty-one passengers and crew were killed in the collision, which ripped a great hole in the broad side of the Italian vessel Andrea Doria all 1,660 survivors were rescued from the ship before it sunk late the next morning.        

1959 - SR.N1 hovercraft crosses the English Channel from Calais, France to Dover, England in just over 2 hours.
1990 - USS Cimarron rescues 25 refugees adrift southeast of Subic Bay, Philippines.

1832 - HMS Beagle anchors in Montevideo.
1912 - First airborne radio communications from naval aircraft to ship (LT John Rodgers to USS Stringham).

1945 - HMS Vestal (J215) is the last British Royal Navy ship to be sunk in the Second World War.

1945 - The US Navy cruiser USS Indianapolis arrives at Tinian with parts of the warhead for the Hiroshima atomic bomb.
1954 - 3 aircraft from USS Philippine Sea (CVA-47) shoot down 2 Chinese fighters that fired on them while they were providing air cover for rescue operations for a U.K. airliner shot down by a Chinese aircraft.

William Bligh entered as an Able Seaman on HMS Hunter (10)

1776

As the Continental brig Reprisal, Cptn. Lambert Wickes, approached St. Pierre Harbor, Martinique, she was attacked by the British sloop-of-war Shark (16). After a sharp encounter, Shark withdrew and Reprisal entered port.

1778

First Battle of Ushant. British fleet of 30 ships of the line, under Admiral the Hon. Augustus Keppel, fought an inconclusive action against a French fleet of  29 ships, under Admiral Louis Guillouet, comte d'Orvilliers.

1808

HMS Pickle schooner,  Lt. Moses Cannadey, wrecked on the Chipiona shoal at the entrance to Cadiz as she was entering carrying dispatches. .

1811

Boats of HMS Active (38), Cptn. James Alexander Gordon, captured 18 vessels and destroyed 10, in a creek of Ragosinza, without the loss of a British man.

HMS Mars (74), Cptn. Robert Dudley Oliver, captured Rhin (44), Capt. Chesneau, in the Bay of Biscay

1808

HMS Volage (22), Cptn. P. L. J. Rosenhagen, captured sloop Requin off Northern Corsica

1861

Frigate USS St. Lawrence, Cptn. Hugh Y. Purviance, spotted a schooner flying English colors and engaged the vessel. Fleeing, the schooner then ran up the Confederate flag and fired three shots. Returning fire, St. Lawrence hit the vessel twice, once in her bow. Survivors of the sunken vessel revealed it had been the Confederate privateer, Petrel.

1498 - On his third voyage to the Western Hemisphere, Christopher Columbus becomes the first European to discover the island of Trinidad.

1588 - The Spanish Armada is spotted off the coast of England.

1718 - Battle at Cape Passaro: English fleet destroys Spanish.

1849 - Benjamin Chambers patents breech loading cannon.
1865 - East India Squadron established to operate from Sunda Strait to Japan.
1874 - Commissioning of USS Intrepid, first U.S. warship equipped with torpedoes.
1912 - First attempt to launch an airplane by catapult made at Annapolis.

1948 - USS Nevada (BB-36) is sunk by an aerial torpedo after surviving hits from two atomic bombs (as part of post-war tests) and being used for target practice by three other ships.
1964 - All-nuclear task force with USS Long Beach, USS Enterprise, and USS Bainbridge leaves Norfolk, VA to begin voyage, Operation Sea Orbit, to circle the globe without refueling. They returned on 3 October.

1970 - Black Tot Day: The last day of the officially sanctioned rum ration in the Royal Navy.

U.S. schooner Enterprise (12), Lt. Andrew Sterett, encountered the Barbary corsair Tripoli (14), Admiral Rais Mahomet Rous, west of Malta in the Mediterranean. After a three-hour battle and false surrenders by Tripoli,Enterprise broadsided the vessel and Rous threw the Tripolitan flag into water in surrender.

1803

Boats of HMS Hydra (38), Cptn. George Mundy, captured Favori.

1808

HMS Wizard (16), Abel Ferris, towed and covered boats of HMS Wizard and HMS Kent whilst they captured guns ashore, the gunboat Vigilant and a convoy of 10 sail, at Noli.

1811

A general promotion of Royal Navy officers took place

1825

HMS Fury Bomb Vessel, Cptn. Henry Hoppner, wrecked by being driven ashore by the ice on the western coast of Prince Regent Inlet, Arctic,  and bilged. .

1909 - British SS Waratah disappears on Sydney to London, 300 killed.

1958 - US atomic sub USS Nautilus 1st begins transit of North Pole "operation Sunshine"

2000 - Judge J. Calvitt Clarke Jr. on his own accord ruled that the R.M.S. Titanic Company, who had salvage rights to the Titanic, was banned from cutting into the sunken ship and plundering the artifacts. The salvage company apparently was searching for $300 million in lost diamonds and had sold chunks of coal from the famous ship wreck.

Boats of Ad. Young's Heligoland squadron HMS Qubec (32), Cptn. Charles Sibthorp Hawtayne, HMS Raven, G. G. Lennock, HMS Redbreast (12), HMS Exertion, Lt. Oliphant, HMS Alert (4), Lt. Neale, and HMS Princess Augusta took four gun-brigs near the island of Nordeney..

1812

HMS Emulous Sloop (18), William Howe Mulcaster, wrecked Sable Island, Nova Scotia.

2 Danish schooners, under Sub Lt. Hans Bodenhoff, forestall an attack on Tromsoe, Norway by HMS Horatio(44), Cptn. Lord George Stuart, but are taken by boats from the frigate after heavy losses on both sides.

USS Essex (32), Cptn. David Porter, burned British brig Hero and captured a ship Nancy off Newfoundland

1813

HMS Bacchante (38), Cptn. William Hoste, and HMS Eagle (74) Cptn. Charles Rowley, destroyed the batteries at the harbour at Rovigno. Most of a convoy of 21 ships was scuttled but one gunboat armed with an 18-pounder and two armed trabaccolos laden with salt were captured.

USS President (44), John Rodgers, captures British bark Lion.

1865

CSS Shenandoah, James Waddell, encountered the British bark Barracouta in the Pacific Ocean and received the first firm report that the Civil War had ended in April with the defeat of the Confederacy. Disarming his ship, Waddell took her to surrender at Liverpool, England.

1865 - Trans Atlantic Cable being laid by SS Great Eastern snaps & is lost.

1916 - Austrian sabotage causes the sinking of the Italian battleship Leonardo da Vinci in Taranto.

1943 - PT-109, under command of LTJG John F. Kennedy, cut in half by Japanese destroyer Amagiri.
1943 - Naval task groups bombard Japanese forces on Kiska, Alaska.
1950 - Amphibious force ships land Marine First Provisional Brigade at Pusan, Korea helping to save this last area of South Korea from capture.
1964 - Three North Vietnamese PT boats attack USS Maddox (DD-731) in international waters in Gulf of Tonkin. Maddox sinks one.

Cptn. William Bligh, HMS Providence, accompanied by HMS Assistant left Spithead on 2nd breadfruit voyage.

1801

HMS Pomone (44), Cptn. Gower, captured Carriere.

1804

 US Mediterranean Squadron Squadron under Commodore Edward Preble, USS Constitution (44), attacks Tripoli. During the bombardment Lt. Stephen Decatur led his men in a two hour hand-to-hand fight while boarding and capturing a Tripolitan gunboat. His younger brother, Lt. James Decatur, was a casualty during this battle.

1809

HMS Lark Sloop (16), Cptn. Robert Nicholas, was upset in a gale and foundered off Cape Causada, San Domingo.

1812

USS Essex (36) ,Cptn. David Porter, captured British brig Brothers

1805

HMS Blenheim (90), Capt. Austen Bissell, Flagship of Vice Ad. Sir Thomas Troubridge engaged Marengo andBelie Poule.

1806

HMS Dover (44) was lying alongside the dockyard wharf at Woolwich, being used as a temporary marine barracks, when she caught fire and was burnt to the water's edge.

1807

HMS Hydra (38), Cptn. George Mundy, engaged a battery protecting Principe Eugenio (16), Della Carolina(10), and Carmen Del Rosario (4) in the harbour of Begu in Catalan. The battery and the 3 polacres were taken by the ships boats.

1811

Four Danish gun-boats taken near Heligoland, but by the accidental explosion of some gunpowder, 30 English seamen and several prisoners were severely burnt or wounded.

1862

CSS Arkansas destroyed by her commanding officer Isaac N. Brown  when her engine broke down to prevent capture by USS Essex off Baton Rouge.
