1679 - The brigantine Le Griffon, commissioned by René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, is towed to the south-eastern end of the Niagara River, to become the first ship to sail the upper Great Lakes of North America.  

1714 - The Battle of Gangut: the first important victory of the Russian Navy.

1942 - Navy Amphibious Task Force lands Marines on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands in first U.S. land offensive of World War II.

1947 - The Kon-Tiki expedition headed by Thor Heyerdahl, which had carried a six-man crew aboard a balsa wood raft from Peru 3,770 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean, crashed into a reef in at Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands on a Polynesian archipelago after being at sea for 101 days since 28th April.

2005 - Russian Priz AS-28 mini-submarine, with seven crew members on board, is rescued from deep in the Pacific Ocean by a British Scorpio-45 rescue sub.

1588 - Battle of Gravelines – The naval engagement ends, ending the Spanish Armada's attempt to invade England.

1673 - Dutch battle fleet of 23 ships demands surrender of NYC.

1813- US Schooners Hamilton and Scourge founder in storm on Lake Ontario.

1815 - Napoleon Bonaparte set sail for exile on St Helena

1921 - The ship Alaska bound for San Francisco met with tragedy. In the fog the ship hit a rocky ledge twice. The boilers blew up as a result, blowing a lot of its passengers off the decks and out into the icy ocean. One hundred and sixty-six people were saved off of the vessel, but thirty-one were missing, and 28 were dead. The ship, Anyox, rescued the survivors, but risked the rocky reef in the fog.

1972 - Women authorized for sea duty in the U.S Navy as regular ship's company.

2000 - Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley is raised to the surface after 136 years on the ocean floor and 30 years after its discovery by undersea explorer E. Lee Spence and 5 years after being filmed by a dive team funded by novelist Clive Cussler.

Signing of Webster-Ashburton Treaty under which U.S. and Great Britain agreed to cooperate in suppressing the slave trade.

1666 - Rear Admiral Robert Holmes leads a raid on the Dutch island of Terschelling, destroying 150 merchant ships in the Vlie estuary, and pillaging the town of West-Terschelling, an act later known as "Holmes's Bonfire".

1778 - Captain Cook reaches Cape Prince of Wales, Bering straits.

1790 - Columbia returns to Boston after 3 year journey, 1st ship to carry US flag around the world.
1865 - Return of Naval Academy to Annapolis after 4 years at Newport, RI.
1942 - Battle of Savo Island begins; First of many sea battles near Guadalcanal.

1780

HMS Flora (36), Cptn. William Pere Williams, took La Nymphe, (36) Chevalier de Romain (Killed in Action), off Ushant.

1797

HMS Arethusa (38), Cptn. Thomas Wolley, captured French corvette Gaite (20) in the Atlantic.

1800

HMS Janus (44) wrecked off Trinidad.

1801

Boats of HMS Atalante (16), Anselm John Griffiths, captured the armed lugger L'Eveilie (2) in Quiberon Bay.

1805

HMS Phoenix (36), Cptn. Thomas Baker, captured Didon (44) off Cape Finisterre.

1809

8 Danish gunboats, under Lt. Cdr. Søren A. Bille, defeat the British brig Allart off Frederiksværk.

1500 - Portuguese sea captain Diego Diaz is first European to sight Madagascar.

1512 - Battle at Brest: English fleet beats French fleet.

1512 - The naval Battle of Saint-Mathieu, during the War of the League of Cambrai, sees the simultaneous destruction of the Breton ship La Cordelière and the English ship The Regent.

1519 - Ferdinand Magellan's five ships set sail from Seville to circumnavigate the globe. The Basque second in command Juan Sebastián Elcano will complete the expedition after Magellan's death in the Philippines.

1653 - Sea battle at Heijde, English fleet beats Dutch.

1675 - King Charles II lays foundation stone of the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London, England.

1904 - Russo-Japanese War: the Battle of the Yellow Sea between the Russian and Japanese battleship fleets takes place.

1943 - Dutch submarine attacks Island Hertenbeest in NW Bali

1673

Battle of Texel. Engagement between the Anglo-French fleet under Prince Rupert and the Dutch under De Ruyter who was protecting a convoy.

1705

HMS Plymouth (60) foundered.

1718

Battle of Cape Passaro. British fleet under Sir George Byng defeated Spanish fleet under Antonio de Gaztaneta off Sicily. 

1797

HMS Sylph (18) and consorts destroyed gunboats at Sable d'Olonne.

1799

HMS Pylades (16), Adam Mackenzie, HMS Espiegle (16), J. Boorder and HMS Courier (12),  Lt. Thomas Searle, under Cptn. Frank Sotheron, HMS Latona (38), attacked a captured British gun-brig, Crash, in the passage between Schiermonikoog and the coast of Holland  HMS Courier started the action but Crash would not surrender until the two sloops came up.

1801

HMS Lowestoffe (32), Cptn. Robert Plamplin, while working through the windward (Caycos) passage, escorting a convoy, was wrecked during the early hours of the morning on the Great Heneaga (Inagua). The loss was due to a sudden change of current after dark.

1808

HMS Comet (10) captured Sylphe. 

Boats of British squadron under Rear Ad. Sir R. Keats captured the Danish brig  Fama (18), Lt. Otto F. Rasch, and the royal yacht  Søeormen (12), Sub Lt. Tøger Rosenørn, off Nyborg inlet, Baltic.

1812

USS Constitution (44), Cptn. Isaac Hull, captures and destroys brig Lady Warren
Boats of HMS Menelaus (38), Cptn. Peter Parker, at Port St. Stefano captured a brig and destroyed other vessels over 3 days.

1909 - SOS 1st used by an American ship, Arapahoe, off Cape Hatteras, NC.
1921 - Carrier arresting gear first tested at Hampton Roads.

1942 - British aircraft carrier Eagle torpedoed & sinks.
1960 - USNS Longview, using Navy helicopters and frogmen, recovers a Discover satellite capsule after 17 orbits. This is first recovery of U.S. satellite from orbit.

1971 - The British Admiral's Cup team wins the Admiral's Cup beating the United States ( Previous holders ) into 2nd place and Australia into third place. The British Prime Minister Edward Heath was the captain of the British team.

1987 - France & Great-Britain send minesweepers to Persian Gulf.

2006 - The oil tanker M/T Solar 1 sinks off the coast of Guimaras and Negros Islands in the Philippines, causing the country's worst oil spill.

1779 - The Royal Navy defeats the Penobscot Expedition with the most significant loss of United States naval forces prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

1851 - 1st America's Cup-US schooner America beats British yacht Aurora.
1942 - USS Cleveland (CL-55) demonstrates effectiveness of radio-proximity fuze (VT-fuze) against aircraft by successfully destroying 3 drones with proximity bursts fired by her five inch guns.

1943 - Alleged date of the first Philadelphia Experiment test on United States Navy ship USS Eldridge.

1953 - Ann Davison arrives in Miami, becoming the 1st woman to sail solo across the Atlantic.
1957 - In first test of Automatic Carrier Landing System, LCDR Don Walker is landed on USS Antietam.
1958 - USS Nautilus (SSN-571) arrives Portland, England completing first submerged under ice cruise from Pacific to Atlantic Oceans.

2000 - The Oscar class submarine K-141 Kursk of the Russian Navy explodes and sinks in the Barents Sea during a military exercise.

2007 - The bulk carrier M/V New Flame collides with the oil tanker Torm Gertrud at the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, ending up partially submerged.

Battle of Malaga. An Anglo-Dutch fleet under Sir George Rooke, flying his flag in HMS Royal Katherine (84), fought an inconclusive action with a Franco-Spanish fleet under the Comte de Toulouse, in Foudrayant (104).

1759

HMS Crescent (32) took Berkeley.

1762

Havana capitulated to British.

1777

American explosive device made by David Bushnell attatched to the 'Turtle' was used to attack HMS Cerberus(28), Cptn. J. Symons, at anchor off New London, CT. It actually blew up a schooner astern of the frigate, and killed several men on board. This was the first vessel ever destroyed in such a manner.

1761

HMS Bellona (74), Cptn. Robert Faulkner, took Courageux (74), Dugne de L'Ambert

1805

Boats of HMS Swift (16), John Wright, take guarda costa schooner Caridad Perfecta (12) at Truxillo.

1810

Isle de la Passe (off Grand Port, Mauritius) surrendered to British.

1811

HMS Temeraire (98), Cptn. Joseph Spear, and HMS Caledonia (20), Cptn. Francis William Austen, engaged a battery on the Cap des Medes at the N. E. end of the island of Porquerolles, near Toulon.

1812

HMS Alert (16), Thomas Lamb Laugharne, captured by USS Essex (46), Cptn. Porter.

1870 - Armed tug Palos becomes first U.S. Navy ship to transit Suez Canal.

1936 - Eskimos in Barrow, Alaska were in a state of starvation this summer when the usual whales and seals did not migrate to the northern seas. The ship called, “The Northland” rescued them as it was loaded with 41/2 tons of foodstuffs. 

2010 - The MV Sun Sea docks in CFB Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada, carrying 492 Sri Lankan Tamils.

1592 - Imjin War: Battle of Hansan Island Admiral Yi Sun-sin decisively defeats the Japanese Navy at Hansan Island.

1886 - SECNAV establishes Naval Gun Factory at Washington Navy Yard.

1915 - British transport Royal Edward sank by German U boat kills 1000.
1942 - British Aircraft Carrier Eagle Destroyed.
1945 - Japan agrees to surrender; last Japanese ships sunk during World War II (15 August in DC).

1979 - A freak storm with force seven winds has decimated the Fastnet race with over 150 yachts still missing and at least 3 reported dead. The Fastnet is the last in a series of five races which make up the Admiral's Cup competition, the world championship of yacht racing.
The final death toll for the race was 15 and because many of the boats were not equipped with a VHF radio it was some time before the organisers were able to determine how many boats were damaged, after the race new rules were put in place that all boats were fitted with VHF Radio's and additional qualifications for competing in the Fastnet were put in place.

2006 - A Japanese oil tanker spilled around 4,500 tons of oil into the Indian Ocean on this day after hitting another ship on a rescue mission. The oil spill was quickly contained, but it still became the largest spill involving a Japanese oil tanker.

1281 - Mongol invasion of Japan: The Mongolian fleet of Kublai Khan is destroyed by a "divine wind" for the second time in the Battle of Kōan.

1864 - Off New England coast, CSS Tallahassee captures 6 yankee schooners.

1895 - Commissioning of Texas, the first American steel-hulled battleship. Texas served off Cuba during the Spanish-American War and took part in the naval battle of Santiago. Under the name of San Marcos, she was sunk in weapon effects tests in Chesapeake Bay in 1911. Her hulk continued in use as a gunnery target through World War II.

1914 - The Panama Canal opens to traffic with the transit of the cargo ship SS Ancon.
1940 - An Italian submarine torpedoes and sinks the Greek cruiser Elli at Tinos harbor during peacetime, marking the most serious Italian provocation prior to the outbreak of the Greco-Italian War in October.

Start of 6 day engagement between a British squadron under Vice Ad. John Benbow and a French squadron under Jean du Casse along the coast of Colombia, off Santa Marta. Benbow vigorously attacked the French squadron, but the refusal of most of his captains to support the action allowed du Casse to escape. Two of the captains, Richard Kirby, HMS Defiance (64), and Cooper Wade, HMS Greenwich (54),  were convicted of cowardice and shot.

1793

Toulon declares for the Royalist cause and men from the British fleet under Lord Hood occupy the defences.

1799

Surinam taken by British.

1801

HMS Sybille (44), Cptn. Chas. Adam, captured French national frigate Chiffone, in Mahe Road.

1812

USS Constitution (44), Cptn. Isaac Hull, defeated HMS Guerrière (38), Cptn. James Richard Dacres, about 600 miles S. E. of Halifax. She was too badly damaged to take in so, as soon as the wounded had been taken out, she was set on fire by her captors.

HMS Nereide (38), Cptn. Nesbit J. Willoughby, engaged French frigates La Bellone and La Minerve, sloop Le Victor and 2 prizes, Windham and Ceylon off Isle de la Passe, Mauritius.

HMS Penguin (16) captured two French brigs.

1801

British cutting-out operations at Corunna. Boats of HMS Boadicea (38), Cptn. Charles Rowley, HMS Fisgard(44), Capt. T. Byam Martin, and HMS Diamond (38), Cptn. Griffith, attacked enemy vessels in Corunna harbour and brought out Neptuno (20) a gunboat (1) and a merchant ship.

British cutting-out operations at Etaples. Boats of HMS Hound and HMS Mallard (12) set fire to a vessel loaded with pitch and tar which had been wrecked near Etaples some time previously. Six flat boats then came out of St. Valery and they forced them ashore. where they lay hauled up on the beach.
