One intersting point, "various experts" (can't recall specific) were trying to convince them to use dried balsa logs instead of freshly cut wet wood for increased bouyancy and cable instead of natural fiber lashings. If they had done so, the raft would have torn its self apart and possibly sunk. The natural moisure of the uncured balsa acted as a repellent to sea water absorbing into the wood and the lashings buried themselves into the wood where they were protected from the elements.

knowing how soft balsa is I picture a metal cable as acting like a saw with the flexing at sea ... :o

If it be tall ships ye are wanting to see, ye come to the right place, Argh!  This is the documentary, Into The Deep: America, Whaling and the World. A haunting, epic adventure of the SS ESSEX, Lost at sea in the 1820's during a Whale Expedition in the Pacific, and its multi-year journey to return home.  This is the story that Herman Melville based Moby Dick "The Whale" on.

Off the topic with a book recommendation but I'd highly recommend 'in the heart of the sea' by Nathaniel Philbrick. It's a very thorough but readable account of the Essex's Demi's and survivors' subsequent struggle with each other and the elements at sea. Gripping stuff.
