HMS Victory 1805 by pompey2 - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1:72

Recommended Posts

So, it's about time I posted an update.

I decided to rig the masts one at a time in the early stages, that is lower shrouds and ratlines.

Started with the main.

post-4201-0-41827200-1376043156_thumb.jpg

First job to hange tackle pendants, a pair each side.

post-4201-0-49412800-1376043159_thumb.jpg

Next start on the Lower shrouds, a pair at a time, Starboard then Port.

This is the first pair mid rigging.

Before getting started I cut and shaped pieces of light white card and covered all the open decks.

I find this has a lot of advantages.

Keeps dust of the deck details, stops me dropping rope cuttings, blocks, tools etc down holes.

It also helps stop me snagging on details with loose clothing etc.

Its a good background to work against, and finally makes a good work top for lighter items.

post-4201-0-86809200-1376043157_thumb.jpg

Anyway back to progress.

Loose rigging the first pair of deadeyes.

I used two little jigs to hold two pairs of deadeyes apart whilst rigging the shrouds.

post-4201-0-39951400-1376043043_thumb.jpg

Jumping ahead a bit - all shrouds now rigged and lanyards secured.

post-4201-0-17148100-1376043164_thumb.jpg

post-4201-0-05877200-1376044112_thumb.jpg

The shrouds around the mast above the bolster, couple of shots.

Ever noticed how dirty your work looks under the scrutiny of a close up camera shot?

I will continue on a second post.

Shrouds done for the main.

post-4201-0-92962900-1376044857_thumb.jpg

Ratlines well underway. part way up one side.

post-4201-0-38637800-1376044859_thumb.jpg

I use a piece of rigid clear plastic stip cut to width.

That helps space the lines.

I also find these tiny clothes pegs are a great help.

For those interested they seem to appear in card shops around Xmas.

They are actually for pinning up Christmas cards.

post-4201-0-61828400-1376044862_thumb.jpg

Working my way up the second side.

You can just see the futtock stave tied to the shrouds on the other side.

post-4201-0-07057500-1376044861_thumb.jpg

Just to break it up a bit I have been getting the Cartharpins ready for fitting, here they are mid preparation.

That is it for now.

Last night i tied of the last of the ratlines for lower main.

Will fit a second stave and rig the catharpins next.

Watch this space as they say.

Hello nick

Nothing changes, the same excellent standard. The shrouds and ratlines are very neat and tidy. And the gauge works like a dream. I notice you have lost a lot of photos on your log, which as happened on a lot of logs, which is a shame. Keep enjoying your build. DAVID

Using a little jig to get the dead eye spacing correct.

Bit of a jump now. I didn't capture any more on the Mizzen.

But have now finished all the Shrouds and Ratlines to all three main masts.

Will leave the Sprit for a little while to give easier access.

So here are a few shots of current stage.

So it's about time I posted an update, it's been an age.

I moved onto the stays.

I decided to turn up some mouse formers in a variety of sizes

post-4201-0-50196300-1435356810_thumb.jpg

They each have a hole to suit the rope size in question.

post-4201-0-95808800-1435356814_thumb.jpg

A difficult bit of fine turning but did lots of extras and picked the best.

Then glued them in place and served over them.

post-4201-0-20977400-1435356817_thumb.jpg

Here is the Mizzen stay going into position.

post-4201-0-33696900-1435356819_thumb.jpg

And belayed to the deck by the Main.

post-4201-0-62969100-1435356821_thumb.jpg

post-4201-0-19767600-1435356823_thumb.jpg

And the other Mizzen and Main stays.

I haven't mounted the Bowsprit yet so have not made off the ends at the moment.

post-4201-0-06928700-1435357933_thumb.jpg

So then moved onto the backstays.

post-4201-0-65828200-1435357992_thumb.jpg

Fitting backstay with deadeyes

post-4201-0-28020500-1435358034_thumb.jpg

To Continue, next to fit the Bowsprit

post-4201-0-32834400-1435360128_thumb.jpg

But first I had to repair a broken Boomkin.

I managed to catch it and snap it off.

So turned a new one, managed to get the knighthead off.

Made up a new assembly and fitted it.

post-4201-0-66951700-1435360135_thumb.jpg

Once the Bowsprit was on I finished rigging the Main stay and preventer.

post-4201-0-56735400-1435360153_thumb.jpg

And did the snaking.

post-4201-0-95978400-1435360208_thumb.jpg

Then rigged the pair of tackle pendants.

Belaying Fore topmast stay

post-4201-0-55818300-1435362604_thumb.jpg

Next onto a job I have been avoiding but needs to be done so here goes.

I have rigged the ship with LEDs, most of which were fitted way back below decks.

But I also plan to put LEDs into the three stern lanterns.

Sourced a brass tube as small as I could find that would accommodate the wiring.

Here is the top of one of the lanterns and a made up bracket with the tube ready for fitting.

post-4201-0-88738700-1435364136_thumb.jpg

Dry fitting the bracket.

post-4201-0-41044500-1435362607_thumb.jpg

Then pull the wiring through the tube.

I am using very fine Kapton coated wires, real thin.

post-4201-0-25136700-1435362610_thumb.jpg

post-4201-0-49168900-1435362612_thumb.jpg

Next glue the brackets into position with epoxy for a good solid fix.

post-4201-0-32076100-1435364026_thumb.jpg

I made up a little wooden jig to clamp the LED into the lamp base whilst I soldered the legs to the wires.

Soldering is not my strong suit but they tested out ok.

Once tested I sealed the soldered legs by applying a coat of epoxy which is a good insulator.

Then I trimmed the legs and bent them upwards so they would fit into the lanterns.

All the standing rigging now done.

I moved on to thinking about the Yards

To make things as easy as possible and to avoid clumsy hands breaking things i wanted to do as much of the running rigging either off model or on yards before fitting.

Yards are at this stage

post-4201-0-57623200-1446659177_thumb.jpg

I made up all of the loose rigging beforehand.

like the Fore yard Sling parts

post-4201-0-69092600-1446659178_thumb.jpg

And the hooked blocks with/without pendants.

post-4201-0-65997800-1446659179_thumb.jpg

I also went through all of the running rigging a bit at a time and added standing ends etc to (already fitted) blocks where required. Drilled a few missed sheave holes through masts and hull, trucks in shrouds, eyes with blocks in sides, fixed blocks in slings etc.

post-4201-0-39146000-1446659329_thumb.jpg

post-4201-0-56003900-1446659330_thumb.jpg

Will continue

And a few more.

Now ready to start raising the Yards.

But I considered that once the rigging was all done, cleaning off the dust would be more difficult.

So decided to have a good spring clean before starting Yards.

I use a piece of rigid plastic tube about 1/4" dia taped into the end of a standard vacuum cleaner.

It still gives a pretty good suction.

Then I use a soft brush to brush off the dust with the tube right up behind.

So this is where I stand before the Yards and once cleaned up.

post-4201-0-88289900-1446730282_thumb.jpg

And so onto the first yard, the Fore Mast Yard.

held with a pin and a small drop of epoxy to the mast.

That's the lot for now
