Proxxon Mini Lathe DB-250 - Opinions/assessments/recommendations?

Recommended Posts

I use the DB 250 more than any tool in my workshop. I am also an Authorized Proxxon Distributor. Please contact me to see if I can offer you any special prices. I have done business with many people on this site. Let me know you are from MSW and saw this post. I am building a CW Morgan and am into the turning of the yards. It works like a champ.

Given that I have not seen or used this Proxxon lathe, I am unimpressed and think it is a waste of money.  i would never buyone.  I have a Sherline 4000 for finer work (relatively expensive accessories), and a Delta 46-250 midi-lathe for woodwork.

Try AnthonyUK's advice first about handwork, or go look for a secondhand cast iron and machined steel midi-lathe, or pen-turner's lathe,  such as made by Jet, Delta, Grizzly, Penn State or even a chinese Harbor Freight lathe.  in the long run, you should consider not only the cost of the lathe, but also the accessories such as a steadyrest, chucks, live and deadcenters, toolrests, chisels, etc.

just my opinion.

if you want to see some delicate lathe work, then look up Cindy Drozda.

Hello Bob, Sherline tools especially in the machine lathes and mills are fantastic products. I learned how to do machine work on them. The DB250 Wood Lathe on the other hand is superior to any small wood lathes I've seen on the market. If I had to do any machine work I would definitely use a Sherline Lathe, the Mill is about equal to the Proxxon FF230 MIll. Sherline of course has many more accessories for both machines and many are compatible with Proxxon. But for woodwork the DB 250 is superior.

Hello everyone.
I would like to clarify some doubts I have with the Proxxon Db 250 and its accessories before purchase them.

Does anyone know if the product Proxxon 27028 Drill Chuck with Sliding Sleeve (https://www.amazon.com/Proxxon-27028-Sliding-Sleeve-Tailstock/dp/B001LRQS66/ref=pd_sim_469_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B001LRQS66&pd_rd_r=56118226-dc5c-11e8-a3d1-552a6c0f9979&pd_rd_w=cuFKK&pd_rd_wg=8nXUV&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=ZCKBFFQR4AC0QMV7FMQE&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=ZCKBFFQR4AC0QMV7FMQE) will screw in the Proxxon 27026 Three Jaw Chuck (https://www.amazon.com/Proxxon-27026-Three-Chuck-Lathe/dp/B000S5LLFU/ref=pd_bxgy_469_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000S5LLFU&pd_rd_r=56118226-dc5c-11e8-a3d1-552a6c0f9979&pd_rd_w=poG1C&pd_rd_wg=8nXUV&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=6725dbd6-9917-451d-beba-16af7874e407&pf_rd_r=ZCKBFFQR4AC0QMV7FMQE&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=ZCKBFFQR4AC0QMV7FMQE).

So to clarify, Will the product Proxxon 27028 Drill Chuck with Sliding Sleeve screw in the Proxxon 27026 Three Jaw Chuck? or in other words ¿Does the Drill Chuck with Sliding Sleeve the same dimensions and same screw threads as the one that the engine has?

I think there is a misconception here. The three-jaw-chuck screws onto the spindle of the lathe, while the the drill-chuck goes into the tailstock, replacing the fixed centre. The drill-chuck has nothing to do on the spindle. It would be even dangerous to use a drill chuck in the spindle, as drill-chucks are not designed for side-pressure.

Hi Wefalck, yes you are right and it´s not my intention. But the real thing is that I need to know if the spindle of the lathe and the drill-chuck accessory has the same measurements like the diameter size and if it has the same screw threads as the primary spindle of the lathe.

Kind regards

To simplify my question:

¿Are both tips, the spindle of the lathe and the spindle of the drill-chuck accessory, with the same sizes (diameter) and same screw threads?

¿Could I use the same spring collet set that comes with the Proxxon Db250 in the Proxxon 27028 Drill Chuck accessory?

Kind regards

Benjamin C.

I would not think so, you can check on the PROXXON Web-site: (https://www.proxxon.com/en/micromot/27020.php. The spindle has a 16 mm x1 mm thread, while the chuck probably has same thread as their hand-held equipment - not sure, but it may be 3/8"-24

Thanks so much, I apreciate it so much, this is the only place I get answers about my questions, even asking directly to Proxxon.

Thanks for all of your helpful information. I just had a few additional questions, let me to explain a little bit more, and because one image speacks louder than thousand words.

At the top of the attached image is the drillchuck, and let me be sure.....Can I remove the cover?, just the cover, not the full chuck, leaving it as the spindle of the engine with no cover, as show at the top right of the image (drillchuck sample) or the bottom left of the image (spindle engine).
So if it is possible to leave the drillchuck as the spindle of the engine, my question are if both sizes marked as "?" in the image are the same and if the screw thread of both are more or less the same. The reason is because I need something to fit into proxxon 3 jaw chuck and I'm thinking to buy the drill chuck to use it but for other lathe machine, because I think they must be the same.

And just to give you an explanation, the reason is just to provide a small three jaw chuck to my lathe, and the problem I'm facing is to find a bolt or slave to fit into the three jaw chuck because it says it is M16*1 but really it is M16*1 fine thread.
So I think if I buy the drillchuck, I could use it to fit into the proxxon 3 jaw chuck and use it with another engine lathe.

OK, if I understand you correctly, what you are looking for is an arbor to fit the PROXXON 3-jaw-chuck to another lathe ?

The problem is that the 16 mm x 1 mm is not a standard metric fine thread and most small lathes would have either a 12 x 1 or a 14 x1 thread on the spindle nose. To what kind of lathe do you want to fit this PROXXON 3-jaw-chuck ? There are various 3- and 4-jaw-chucks of the same body diameter (45 mm I believe) with either 12x1 or 14x1 thread on the market of Indian or Chinese make. You can find them on ebay etc. from about 20€ (aluminium body and jaws) or 50€ (steel body and jaws) upward. They also sell straight 10 mm arbors for them with the respective male spindle thread.

I have sometimes used the Proxxon drill chuck with a Proxxon arbor in a bigger lathe to turn very small parts which are not possible to attach in a big lathe 3 jaw chuck. The first picture is showing this:

The second picture shows the size difference of Proxxon 3 jaw chuck and drill chuck on the bed of DB250 lathe together with lathe spindle thread. From this picture it is easy to see that the drill chuch does not fit on the lathe spindle thread:

Depends on what material you want to part and what diameter.

BTW, small lathes don't have a lot of torque. A good old-time method for larger diameters (say > 5 mm), albeit today frowned upon by the HSE, is to to make a first cut with a parting tool and then to finish off the parting with a fretsaw at low speed. It also saves you material as otherwise you will have to make stepping cuts to prevent the parting tool from becoming jammed.

Hi Rodric

I can highly recommend the micro woodturning tools made by Robert Sorby of Sheffield. See here for their use on my current build. The set I have includes a parting tool which works well, although I must confess I often use the method @wefalck describes in the previous post. On small diameters, <5mm, I use a jeweler's piercing saw instead of a fretsaw.

Just wondering where do you get the replacement set of 6 plastic nylon type collets for the Proxxon DB250. They used to sell the sets separately, but seems now those that need replacements have been abandoned by Proxxon, with no available replacement sets anywhere to be found. Hopefully someone might correct me with some direction to a set of collets still available. Cheers

Try here, it is a German store where they sell spare parts for Proxxon.

https://www.fluidonline.de/en/search?query=proxxon db250&page=2

They have the collets you need at €7.99 each.

But it is cheaper to buy the 3-jaw chuck(€40.99) and the spindle 12.99) that allow you to handle larger diameters.
