Lovely work on the little message? port Michael B) .It maybe small, but it is all these small details that add up to a great build.

Kind Regards Nigel

Nigel,

Thanks for your nice comment as well as looking in...Yes small details do help in the aggregate, however labor intensive. I've seen some amazing builds on MSW that are detailed super small "extras" They do make the builds really stand out.

Hello,

Here is another "retro-update". I decided to remove the original, kit included, stairs so that I could replicate more closely what has been installed on the 1:1 in Stockholm.

The pics are self-explanatory (the first pic was my original installation). I purchased two sets of stairs and glued the step's vertical timbers together so that I could then reshape them with the curves.

The Stockholm Vasa ladders are, I think, new so I assume (that word again) that the museum historians copied ladders that were in use at the time that included those curves. I also noticed that some of the 1:1 photos have a curved deck cutout at the top of the stairs, so I did some cutting and fixing as well.

My center area between the two ladders is incorrect, but too late to deal with that. I may add some kind of figurine details on that center wall. Hmmmm

Moving on I will now start on the bow figures. They will be painted similarly to my stern figures. With these figures I will attempt to add some sort of slim framing that I see on the 1:1 photos. I have to think about how to do this.

Again, I so appreciate, and I am certainly motivated with your kind posts as well as those of you whom are kind enough to just visit this build in progress. Thanks everyone.

Regards,

Michael

I really like your build Michael, your way to build, the naturalness, the aspect of a closer view of an original ship after five years of sailing Seven Seas... Now she is in the dry dock... For some reparations...

Nice ladders Michael! I also like your style, and its distinct for you. You made a great decision when going natural with muted painted figures.

Love the ladders Michael B) Excellent work and clever thinking gluing several stringers together. It may be a small detail, but it is a massive improvement over the kit parts.

Kind Regards Nigel

Nigel,

Thanks as well. I Keep seeing things that need "to be fixed" Hmmm turning into an egg hunt. I do prefer the look of the ladders, as it seems all kits come with the same generic looking ones.

A great series of photos Michael, I just love the work you do.

A point of curiosity about the grating, was it a 'fixed' feature on Vasa, it doesn't look like it could be taken up and seems to have quite some depth to it?

Cheers,

B.E.

B. E.

I so appreciate your comments, you are one of my sages. Hmmm There goes an other needed thing to fix. The gratings are not deep, its a result of the lighting, but you are right, it never occurred to me (in my ignorance) that gratings were meant to also be removed as needed. That is a big error on my part, the framing is all wrong.

So, you are two-for-two ! I learned about my wrong capstan from you posting about them with Ferit, and now I'm learning about my incorrect framing of my weather deck gratings. I really DO appreciate the question. Please don't be shy; if you see other ignorant errors on my part PLEASE share, I really want to continue learning as I go on.

PS: Thanks for the nice remarks about my work (:-) Don't disappear on me, ok?

Regards,

Thank you for your kindly worded "intervention".

A point of curiosity about the grating, was it a 'fixed' feature on Vasa, it doesn't look like it could be taken up?

After you posed the question it then glared at me how incorrect it all was. I sincerely appreciate your input. As you will note below, dry-dock will last a bit longer as needed alterations, have begun.

I looked at Matti's and at JanV's they so got it right. OK, now armed with photos, this will be an easy, but very important visible fix. THANKS...

PS: Thanks for mentioning this before, deck cannons, masts and standing rigging were in place (:-)

Hello Michael,

really great pictures from your Wasa. Your progress is amazing! The way you build (somtimes rebuild...) the model is great, I like this.

I like the look of your deck, and Its great to see how you make it better and better! You must have been scared when you took the gratings off... You also have the chance to make one of them closed with a hatch like the Vasa on the museum has. Something I would have done if Ive thought of it from the beginning.

Thanks Joachim, always nice to read your kind words. I'm happy that I am learning as I go along, and that I am at a stage of this build where I can still go back to "fix" errors. I appreciate our members who help to point out some of my BIG errors (:-)

Matti,

Yes I was nervous when I pulled the glued gratings away, because I had no deck timbers left over, so I could not replace any that came away with the grating frames. But they came up almost without damaging the deck. One area got chipped, but my new framing will cover the scar.

Yes, I plan on closing one of the grating with a hatch. I ordered some new pre-assembled gratings from Cast Your Anchor in Canada. Nice people. They always seem to have what I need. So waiting for the parts. Looking forward to the repair. Thanks for your nice thoughts always appreciated.

Hi everyone,

A very minor update. I'm working again so have less time with the boat. But I'm enjoying my part-time return to my first love (aviation).

I tried my hand at sculpturing, No let me rephrase; I tried my hand at shaping two pieces of wood to represent the cathead braces. Not "winners" but painted, they sort of disappear visually. The 1:1 braces are so beautiful, way beyond my capacity as a wood shaper (:-) These will have to do.

You will note that the gratings have been removed, working on completely re-installing those, as they should have been. Mine were such a disappointment.

There is also a pic of the completed ladders. Thanks for looking in, much appreciated.

Regards,

Michael
