Wasa by md1400cs - FINISHED - Corel - 1:75

PS: Your build is coming along very nicely. Billings was a wise choice.

Michael,  thanks for your valued reply.  I am surprised you said "Billings" was a wise choice ... why not "Corel" ... which is the ship you are building?  Also it was not a well informed choice on my part.  I visited the VasaMuseet, saw the Billings kit and purchased it.  They did not sell wooden kits from other manufacturers, so I guess they made the choice for me!

Rob,

There has been MUCH discussion from several Vasa builders. The overwhelming consensus is that Corel’s is by far the least accurate example.

If you care to look back into my log (the first three pages, page 10, page 13, page 15&16, ) you will see glaring examples of errors, most of which I actually returned to fix. Billings is spot on with all of my “fixes”

For example;

•The stern is totally incorrect, including the windows.

•The weather deck (hence the entire profile [including the stern]) is much too narrow.

•The gilded figures, especially at the galleries are incorrect and not representative.

•The galleries are very difficult to mount in their proper location.

•The poop deck entry doors sit much too high on the weather deck.

• All deck cannons are just “parts bin” examples, not even a resemblance of accuracy.

These examples are just at the top of my head.

Fred Hocker, the museum’s curator was wise in choosing the Billings – considered the most accurate of the three kits available. SO your choice was actually an informed choice, though from an expert.

Yes I have the Corel. I bought it way before I knew what I was doing, nor did I expect the kit to be so “way off” after I really started learning and being consumed with this build.

The Billings example would have allowed a much more “by the instruction book” approach.

PS: You will note that some of my photos are missing (also from all build logs) the MSW server crashed and after the return from the dead many builders lost photos, as well as their logs (;-(

One the plus side, excluding sail rigging, several non Corel builders appreciate the fairly accurate Corel rigging sheets!!

Cheers,

MIchael

Michael

Hi Mates,

Continuing with the foremast cap (platform?) I decided to try to make a ring for the lowest one on the platform. This may seem old school to some of you, but for me it was new thinking J I used Corel’s metal ring as a template.

I modeled my attempt, for this cap, from looking at the 1/10th. I also realized that I would need to attach the chainplate deadeyes through the lower ring (four to a side), and not at the base of the platform as was done for the bowsprit cap.

That said, it also appears as if there are variations in the cap ring designs when comparing the 1/10th to the 1/1 rebuilt cap rings; again Vasa and its question marks.

So those small basswood rings that I curved, would not accept chainplate deadeyes. It would have been a mess. So a larger ring it had to be.

I used the Vasa museum plan sheet as a guide for placing the ring braces.

The foremast had an issue as well; as I made the mid smaller foremast I then realized after also making the trestles that the mid mast just slipped right through.

So back to re-adjust trestle spacing and a bit of sanding and squaring off the tip of the lower foremast (note the pics) all fits ok now. Enjoying this part of the build.

Always BIG thanks for dropping by!

Regards,

Michael

RobZorba has been a bit frustrated in his log with the Billings Vasa stern measurements, and your ship looks so excellent.

So I thought that I would re-visit the issues that I had with my Corel’s stern.

Pic 1 – A PERFECT out-of-the-box build of Corel Wasa (beautiful work with the addition of sails). Euro builder it was for sale, and it did sell on the commercial market.

Pic 2 – As it should look – and still does

Pic 3 – My Corel out-of-the-box initial work

Pic 4 -6 – My beginnings of a surgical fix

Pics  last three – after surgery and butt lift  (still not “just right”) an improvement for sure.

Lot’s of extra (should not have been needed) extra work J

You would sure think that the designer of the Corel plans would have at least taken some pictures of the "real" Wasa, and done more research, on a kit that is a bit pricey to begin with.   You did a bang-up job making those "inconsistencies" right Michael.  :)

Yep Michael, your changes to the Corel kit look perfect.  I am cross with myself for "believing" the BB kit would not have a similar problem.  Why the heck did I not check it more carefully before I started assembly and planking?  The strange thing here is that with Corel it is the lower Gallery that is too low, and the upper gallery is OK.  With BB, the lower gallery is OK but the upper gallery is too low.

So ... Corel's Vasa needs a butt lift ... and BB's Vasa needs a breast lift ... :-)

Incidentally, the digital plans published by the Vasamuseet are incredibly helpful.  I downloaded the set of them, I think 7 large sheets in total.  I wish I had found these before starting my build of the BB Vasa.  I will ask one of the architects in Sarande if they will print the set on their drum printer, scaled to 1:75 per the BB kit.

George, thanks you are always so encouraging. It seems that Corel released the Wasa before it had been resurrected. This is according to Ulises who also built the Corel version. His log is here as well. His rigging work is also spectacular, and he added sails.

Rob - So ... Corel's Vasa needs a butt lift ... and BB's Vasa needs a breast lift ... :-) - very funny.

Yes the Vasa museum plans are excellent. I, as you might have noticed, have them as well. Another great source is this book; The Royal Warship VASA by Björn Landström. Out of print but wonderful drawings.

Hi Michael - do you know if the fore stay blocks are 4 hole & 6 hole blocks? If they are I guess I missed that one. So hard to find a good close-up of some areas. I can`t tell if Clayton`s is set up that way or not. 99% of the builds I have seen just use 3 hole blocks. Maybe another simplification by Corel :(.

Mark,

I posted some pics in your build log. Here is a pic from Clayton's - a good one. And one other from a Euro commercial builder. The four hole seems to be "the proper" way to go.

Thanks for the likes and thanks for dropping by and posting encouraging notes. (;-)  Finishing up the fabrication of the foremast platform.

•Trimmed down the lower braces before mounting the first ring

•Then made the bits for the upper ring braces

•Used a divider point to simulate the small nails for the lower braces

•Installed the 18 vertical bits

•Added the rings

•Then with a rotary tool sanded down the protruding edges and tops

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Next up, need to cut the 32 small bits to insert around periphery of the platform. Used the blue tape as a measure guide for all the cuts.

This second platform was easier than the first (bowsprit) I learned through experimenting with the first one. The upper fore, and the three mains should be a smooth build section.

Still mentally thinking of how to insert the shroud deadeyes and keeping the chainplate rope attachments within scale. Still a “?”

I wonder if just wrapping lower the deadeyes in tarred rope and running those eight ropes through the large flat ring would be “OK” ??

However I believe that the last pic IS how it should be Hmmmm

Again, thanks for dropping by.

Michael

Hi Michael,

after a long absence here, I am really happy to see these fantastic advance on your model !  It looks so realistic !

During my summer holiday unfortunately I had a big accident with my car and the caravan, everything was totally damaged. Fortunately, my family and I were unhurt, but afterwards we had a lot of trouble and I could not spend my time for anything else.

But now, I am back again and I am glad following your build log further on.

Hi Mates,

Thanks for the really nice words, "likes" or for just dropping by.

Rob-Happy that you find my technique useful. BUT, if you decide to do the platforms this way, I will need to post a fix. I need to remove the lower ring and re-set the braces. I'll explain when I post an update.

Peter-(:-)

Joachim-Thanks, as always for your visits, as well as your always such encouraging thoughts.

So sorry to read your post. Yes so lucky that you were all OK! Still this kind of an event is very sobering indeed.

Many of us will be happy to see your updates with your stunning AV, one of the very best builds here at MSW. and with such a complicated ship.

Hi mates,

Thanks for dropping in. Mark thanks as well for your supper compliment SO appreciated. Yes four more (bowsprit done) Hmmm

Though the next ones should be easier. Learned a few things with this lower foremast plate, as well as having a grasp on how to fashion the needed parts.

-------------------------

Continuing, I started to fashion the deadeye “chains” using 20 gauge black wire (pic 1) not correct, but such a small almost hidden detail once the plate gets busy with ropes everywhere.

I then realized that the lower ring braces were extending outward too far (see pic 2, 3, 4) and the chain would not hang properly outside of the lower already attached ring

So removed the ring and Dremeled down the braces (see pic 5)

--------------------------

I then took some leftover bits that I had purchased to use as chains for the hull, but then decided against it. So those bits will now become (after blackening them) the way to attach deadeye/chains to the ropes below the mast cap. See pic 6.

The last three pics show the “fix” my favorite word with this very very slow build. (:-)

So, the next caps will have a bit larger flat ring and or cap floor will be a bit smaller.

Thanks for still following along at this snails pace,

Regards,

Michael
