The First Royal Dutch Yacht Mary by flying_dutchman2 - FINISHED - Mamoli - 1646

Recommended Posts

HMS Mary was the first Royal Yacht of the Royal Navy. She was built in 1660 by the Dutch East India Company. Then she was purchased by the City of Amsterdam and given to King Charles II, on the restoration of the monarchy, as part of the Dutch Gift. She struck rocks off Anglesey in thick fog on 25 March 1675 while en route from Dublin to Chester. Although 39 of 74 crew and passengers managed to get to safety, the wreck quickly broke up. Guns and other artefacts were taken to the Merseyside Museums for conservation and display.

She was the first of some 27 yachts which the king owned between 1660 and 1685. The word yacht derives from a Dutch word jagen, meaning to hunt. She was 52 feet long, with a beam of 19ft (15.8 by 5.8m) and displaced 100 tons. Her hull was copper clad. The Dutch yacht is the fore-runner of the Thames sailing barge. They had a large sail area, but a shallow draught that enabled them to navigate shallow waters. As with a sailing barge, sailing was achieved by means of a leeboard instead of having a deep keel. The shallow draught meant that she needed to carry additional ballast when sailing deeper waters. She was built for luxury with a decorated counter.

I started building, The First Royal Dutch Yacht ”Mary”, 1646 from Mamoli in 2010. After the planking of the hull I put her away as there was little time for any boat building. I started working on her last year. Presently I am working on the masts.

I like this boat but the instructions are horrible and the drawings are all done in freehand. No CAD was used like my Bounty from Constructo. Furthermore, translation was done by an Italian and a dictionary because it seemed like he did not speak English. But all is not lost. The drawings are similar to the Statenjacht Utrecht drawings. So I have been working with those as well.

Current Built: Zeehaen 1639, Dutch Fluit from Dutch explorer Abel J. Tasman

Unofficial motto of the VOC: "God is good, but trade is better"

Many people believe that Captain J. Cook discovered Australia in 1770. They tend to forget that Dutch mariner Willem Janszoon landed on Australia’s northern coast in 1606. Cook never even sighted the coast of Western Australia).

Looks like sometimes the pictures are posted not in order even though when I look in the thumbnail view they are.

Here is the second layer of hull planking.

Here I am creating the railing consisting of 1mm x 1mm x 10mm bass wood and walnut.  It was soaked and then with my finger nails I bend it in place, added nails on the traced drawing and let it dry for a couple of days.

Creating the leeboards.  For the modelers that do not what a leeboard is, the following is an explanation.

A leeboard is a lifting foil used by a sailboat, much like a centerboard, but located on the leeward side of the boat. The leeward side is used so that the leeboard is not lifted from the water when the boat heels, or leans under the force of the wind.

Several pictures of what I have presently finished and the next installments will be the masts.  My neighbor has hemmed and stitched the sails and all there is left to do is to dye them brown.  She did an excellent job on the sails of the Bounty.  It is something I have to do myself one of these days.

Here are some pictures of the rope coils on deck.  I learned later on that the rope is a bit to large in diameter to the scale of the boat.  I will correct this in my next boat.

Finished up the masts and stitched up the sails.
I will not be doing any building in the next couple of weeks because Mon01-13-2014 I am getting my carpal tunnel on my left wrist fixed.  I had my right wrist done last year.  It is all that repetitious work I have done over the years (computer programming, pruning of plants).
Once the other hand is fixed I can build for longer periods of time.

Finishing up the main mast and the spars.  Did many different things as the instructions did not look real.  There are a lot of things on this boat that are not correct.  The tan rope I got is flimsy.  So I purchased some rope from Chuck P.  Syren ship M. Co.  I am waiting for that to start the rigging.

Made a small jig to line up the deadeyes.

Also, some of the deadeyes are a joke.  There is a large one that is supposed to have 5 holes and only has three.  Tried to drill 2 more and the piece just fell apart.  It was brittle.  I created a new one.  It is not the same as the machine made one but  I still need to sand it down a bit.

Mamoli has decent Dutch kits, but I am afraid to purchase any of them in the future, knowing that they are not accurate.  It is a shame.  I spent a $120.00 on the Mary and about 20% of the material is worthless.  Plus the drawings are all by hand.  This company never heard of CAD drawings?  Constructo had all CAD and there were large sheets with an excellent color booklet and description.

The following pictures are of the mast and spars.

Some of the spars have a metal "U" attachment in the middle of the spar.  I researched that and the jachts from that era and the Utrecht (100 years later), Use this to tie a rope to it, instead of tying the rope directly to the spar.

Last but not least. I am going to donate the Mary to the hand surgeon Dr. Nagel who did my wrists. I had acute carpal tunnel on both my wrists.  He loves talking about ships so why not give him a boat. He will see the intricate details on building and he understands what it takes, as he does wrists. He mentioned that on both my wrists it wasn't a simple cut with the laser, he had to get out the tiny saw and put that in the scope to cut the ligament. He said that I have thick and muscular wrists but common for a person that works a lot with there hands.

It is a decent kit.  I have redone many items that are historically incorrect.  This is after reading and looking at my pictures of Dutch boats and the building of other flat bottom boat kits.

I was looking at the block which will be located at the bow. I re-did it and created one from Popular in shape of a heart, or that is what they call it (I think). The Statenjacht - Utrecht has it as well and some of my other models from the same era too.

Received the roping from Chuck P. (Syren M. Co), which is absolutely gorgeous. The thick roping actually looks like roping, unlike what some kits include.

Put the mast in its place with a mast ring. I never glue the mast. The rigging will hold it in the boat. Here the boat is put in thick Styrofoam (the stuff DELL uses to ship there hardware). I have several little levels to make sure the boat is level on the X and Y plane. I also spread out the rope and the next step is to stretch the shrouds to straighten out the mast. All the time measuring with the level to keep it as straight as possible.

I know nothing is ever straight on a boat but I would like to come close.

Next I am working on the sails (pictures coming soon).

I have dyed the sails with tea (yes, you heard it right). I don't like the brown dyes available. I used that for older builds and the brown looked too fake.

The sails look "used" and the color is not consistent.
