HMS Triton 1:48 POF by Eric

Recommended Posts

So here is my keel so far.

Not glued up yet. Minimal sanding still needs to be done but won't do that till it's glued and pinned.

Cherry will be my primary wood for the framing. I can mill my own wood so my options for contrasting wood are open. All joints were cut with a chisel. At first I attempted using templates glued to the wood but I just ended up with hogged keel. So I cut my keel straight and cut the scarfs as close to the plans as I could. I must have messed up at least 6 keel pieces before I got my first somewhat acceptable scarf joint. I have also been messing with numerous other pieces of the keel but won't know if they will work.

I bought a copy of TFFM off amazon for $28 and that has helped a ton with this build so far. I'm assembling the build board and hope to study the rest of the plans once they become available.

I have a few other builds going so when I feel like making saw dust I will turn to the Triton.

I'm really excited to be building this ship and hope to learn a ton from you guys !

Welcome! We'll be learning together. I went through four keels and three aft deadwoods so far before I was satisfied with the results, so don't feel too bad when you mess up. You have a nice keel there. I carved the fore scarf by hand. Make sure your chisels are razor sharp, score the wood well along the plan lines, and carve with the grain. It worked out well for me.

Hello;

Welcome to the project. This is my first scratch build also and it's grate fun.  I just hope you scrap box doesn't get as large as mine when I started. If you need some portion of the plan I have a set and will be glad to send you or what I have.

Pete, Randall and TJ thanks for the encouragement ! I have a good little waste pile already. I don't mind it much. When I make a mistake I try to learn, but when a mistake comes in the form of a kit supplied part, I loose my mind.

I glued the three sections of keel last night and will pin them today. I am also working on the keel/Gripe joint. I only have the initial plan supplied on the site. I assume there is a better view of both the for and aft where it begins to rise. I guess I'm wondering if the joint is a compound scarf ? Any assistance is appreciated as I have not been given permission to see the rest of the plans yet ?

I have also overlooked the fact that the rising wood is part of the keel not a separate piece. Would it be wrong if I just fabricated my own (omitting the jointery for attaching the frames), or should my scrap pile grow larger ?

Hello SpongeBob (Do you have a real name? with respect.)

For the first one question, is not a compound one but a "plain one" quite easy to do. The second one... you are right, no rising wood, no filling pieces for the the water go to the limber...

So many questions, decisions, decisions...

Good luck!

Daniel, thanks for the input. My name is Eric. Funny my fathers family was from Spain. Don't know where from ? At some point a long time ago his family moved to Ireland. I guess his family wasent to welcome in Ireland so they moved to the u.s.a.

The learner- were you at my house taking pictures of my scrap pile ? Just kidding of course. I'm hoping some of it can have a second chance later on in the build.

So more progress on the keel. I'm not attaching this until I know the stem is at the proper angle (thanks TFFM!). Still researching how to orient my rising wood. I may use a simple lap joint for these boards. I thought I had seen someone make the same mistake but obviously didn't pay close enought attention to it.

Till next time ,

Eric

Nice scarf Eric!

Where did you get those hand sanders? Any web page I can order from?

Don´t trick you to much with the rising wood and other stuff. If I were you I would stick to the plans you have. There are inacuracies of course but you will haave to deal with them... See the other logs, specially Wang´s log as inspiration, then make your own decisions. Good luck!

Welcome to the Triton build Eric. I'm part Irish and I don't mind you being here.  :) Or maybe my ancestors weren't wanted either!

Either way, we don't care where your from, we just love to have new members to the Triton build. We also like lots of pictures and it appears you have that part down pat. Best of luck with your build and keep the pictures coming.

Here's some pics of the beginning of the false keel ( only 5 more scarf joints to cut here).

Question: what type of joint would have connected the sections of rising wood ?

Hello Eric!

There is no rising wood in the plans.

Do not glue the shoe to the keel till you have complete all the fraiming. Even being extrimly careful while sanding you might damage the edges of the shoe timber. I also recomend you to use a different color for the shoe to enphasize both parts.

Best wishes!

Here is some of my latest work. Haven't quite sanded the inside edge much. Once I pick up my full size plans from the print shop I'll get the joints tight.post-1401-0-68050500-1390629277_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-25238200-1390629365_thumb.jpg

Hello Eric!

Looking good... You can print the plan to an A4 size with your home printer just to check out the piece. I didn´t print the full plan till one year or more since I started the project. They are quite big.

Best wishes!

Daniel.

Thanks for all the likes !

The rest of the wing transom was installed along with what I'm going to call frames # 29. I just free cut these but the footing match perfect at 27 degrees as opposed to the 28 degree footing frames # 28 have. Let me know if anyone sees any problems.
