I'm doing some touch up sanding on the windows to improve the look.

M.Taylor hello. Can you explain what kind of liquid used to make this glass so good?
Thank you very much for sharing.

I'm using Micromark's Micro-Glaze.  But it looks like they don't sell it anymore.   I have heard of some using white glue since it dries clear.

G'day Mark

Great progress on the gallery windows. I'm so envious of you to have your very own "death star".

Regarding the carvings that you are planning. Could you use your lazer and cut the what you want to do in layers and joined them together like plywood? I don't know much about what program that you use to make the windows etc,but maybe you can splice up yhe carving object into layers, if you can understand what I'm trying to express.

If you can't do that, try 3D printing!

Great work mate and havagooday.

Check your favorite decal vendor for a product called Micro Scale "Micro Kristal Klear". It's used by model railroaders and armor folks for glazing.  MicroMark may have infringed this product; hence they no longer sell Micro-Glaze.

I thought about that Greg, but the overall thickness precluded it.   What I am doing is etching the parts for carving and cutting the complete part out.  I don't have the software or the CAD knowledge to do 3D at this point so 3D printing is out.   I've been doing a bit of carving as time permits and it is rather relaxing....

Hi Mark,

Given the period of the ship and the standard of glass back then I would say you have got it just about right, to my eyes they look slightly dimpled which I know was quite common.

The frames fit nicely into the galleries and so altogether they are going to make the completed galleries look fantastic.

Good luck with the carving mate, I have no doubt all will be well once you get your hands and eyes calibrated.

Keep up this first class work.

Thanks for the "likes" and comments, as always they are welcomed.

Not much time lately in the shipyard do to other commitments but I'm hoping for a change in that.   But, I do have question, so tell me what you think.

Hahn did his drops, roof, and carvings in a two contrasting light woods.   L'Hermione has coloring matching the paint.   I'm debating... I have the drops set up for pear and same for the roof.  My other choice is to stain them ebony as I don't have any ebony in the right size and nor am I inclined at this point to want the aggravation with the sanding dust... and there will be alot of it.

I'm leaning towards the pear (not Swiss Pear) for the drops and roof and leave them natural with boxwood carvings.  No finish would be applied for quite awhile to allow the pear to age some and gain the brown patina.

What do you think?  The browns of pear and boxwood or ebony and boxwood?

Evening Mark,

If it were down to me I think I would go for the browns of Pear & Boxwood.

I do find the Eboniser a little inconsistent in color plus with Pear and Boxwood being a very tight grain the depth of penetration.

Just my thoughts mate, you'll make the decision that's right for you and this lovely ship.

This part that I'm working on now is probably one of the most relaxing parts I've done.  I think I've chilled out on things.   :)

The drops... they not only have their shape when viewed from the side, but also have to sit flush to the hull and also have to be rounded to match the gallery.  Then there's the outside shape from top to bottom which I can only describe as a rounded bevel.  Thick at the top, thin at the bottom.

Here's some pics of the work in progress.  I'm making both at the same time to shoot for uniformity  I started with blanks cut to the shape when viewed from the side. I then set up the scroll saw with sanding blades instead of cutting blades and did the fit to the hull.   I'm currently doing the shape from side to side to match the gallery.

Here's pictures of the process (not complete as I forgot to fire up the camera in between tossing some in the scrap box and starting over.

First.. rear view to show the fit to the hull.

post-76-0-18422000-1464653516_thumb.jpg

Side view to show the shape and fit to the gallery.

post-76-0-10516100-1464653524_thumb.jpg

Lastly, the rounding to match the gallery.   Being cheap frugal, I have some 120 grit Olsen Sanding Blades that I've turned around and stuck a strip of 100 grit stickyback to.  Works like a charm.

post-76-0-00364800-1464653531_thumb.jpg

More when I get the final shape done and after finessing the final fit.

I'm not familiar with sanding blades. Looks like a neat idea.

Here's a link:  http://www.olsonsaw.net/cat/scroll-saw-blades/scrollsanders/

What I like is they're smaller than even the Proxxon belt sander.   They also take off material slower so one has more control than with a belt or disk sander.

Mark those scroll sanders are great.  I saw a tip on here some time ago which I am not sure if you have seen.  the tip suggested glueing wood backers to the sanding strip to prevent round-over of the sanded piece.

It's taken longer than I thought to get to this point.  I had a minor issue with wood that had defects unseen from the surface, but that goes with the territory and then also quite a bit going on in "life".   There will be another pause coming up for Janet's surgeries, but for the most part, that will just entail my keeping an eye on things during the recovery process.

The first drop is essentially finished except for some minor touch up (and the carvings...).  I've finessed it to fit the hull and the molding and it just needs a bit of touch up on the sweeping curve from top to bottom before gluing into place.  The other side is finessed into place and just needs the final shaping to get the curve and then any touch up work.

Once these are done, I'll post both sides and a stern shot. I'll need stern shot anyway for my records and to check for uniformity.

I won't be applying any finish for now until the wood has a chance to age and regain some of it's patina.

Here's the photos...

Thanks all.   Both drops are finished (except for the acanthus leaves - carvings) and mounted.   I've flipped it over back to right side up on my "jig" board and and starting the roofs.   This should be interesting for me....  More multi-curves to shape.
