NMBROOK Posted June 28, 2015 Author Share #544 Posted June 28, 2015 Work this weekend has predominantly concentrated on reinforcement of the upper structure and fitting the deck beams.No external work can start without fitting these beams as they slide through the hull sides. shaped plywood pieces were epoxied the length of the deck to provide support for the deck beams and to give a visual 'blackout to the lower deck.This is to counteract the fact that full internal detail and rigging of the cannons will not be carried out.Carriages will be authentic on the top but have a flat bottom to allow secure gluing to the deck.Careful studying of what is actually on show with the full cannons in place shows no other additional work is necessary. The deck beams once inserted were packed with boxwood shim to increase the camber the required amount.These beams are insufficiently strong enough to be unsupported and were originally going to be set by the hanging knees and pillars.Further work after trimming the packs is to add pear chocks inbetween each beam.These will be sanded to follow the tops of the beams and the sheer.This provides further support for the sub deck but also tidies things up if a get anyone staring into the gunports I have also commenced framing the counter.The width of the blocks used allows them to form the lining of the stern chasers.I milled a shallow slot in the bottom member to ease accurate positioning of these. The pics show WIP,as that is it until next weekend.Then I hope to complete this work in readiness for the final shaping of the bow and stern blocks and general completion of the fairing. NMBROOK Posted July 6, 2015 Author Share #554 Posted July 6, 2015 Final update of the week,back to work tonight I have cut the lower windows out and removed the obechi strip and cleaned the slot out.I have then fitted a boxwood moulding I machined on the mill using a guide fence.The builders model depicts a central doorway but I am having doors at each end of the balcony.Artistic license has kicked in here.A central door would have spoiled the symmetry and when all said and done,I don't find the stern overly attractive on the builders model. Saving the pics until after next weekends work I have been planking from the lower chainwale down to the upper wale.Very slow work due to using 6mm wide boxwood planks coupled with some very serious tumblehome and sheer necessitating some bizarre spiled planks.As a complete change to the norm for me,I have deliberately chosen NOT to represent caulking.Fixings will be represented as these will also be actually performing a function due to the model's hull structure.The 'black' strake will be Ebony as it is actually black on the builders model. NMBROOK Posted July 19, 2015 Author Share #560 Posted July 19, 2015 OK a little bit of an update Planking work is progressing extremely slowly.All boxwood planks have been glued with aliphatic resin but I have reverted to epoxy for the Ebony 'Black strake'.Slow going as it works out at four parallel planks from lower chainwale down to the black strake.These planks have to conform to the sheer and many compound curves of the hull.Some severe clamping techniques have been employed to allow this.Various 'dogs' have been spot glued to the hull allowing the use of wedges and 'stops' have been spot glued to get the planks to follow the sheer.These are only obechi so are easy to break off and sand flush.The pencil line represents the waterline,which is in abeyance yet as to whether I will splice the ebony/boxwood along this line. Received my Brynes drawplate this week ,fixings will be boxwood on boxwood and copper on the ebony. NMBROOK Posted August 2, 2015 Author Share #562 Posted August 2, 2015 It has been a little hectic at work,but I have managed to finally get in the shipyard this weekend After much deliberation and the fact I now own a Brynes drawplate,I have decided to proceed with treenailing .This is being done exclusively in boxwood and includes the areas of Ebony.This contrast I noticed on the upper areas of Dr Mike's L'Ambiteux and is a feature I particularly like.I did a small area to get an idea of the finished result and have now started the mass drill and insertion.The idea with doing this as I go along is that I have the bulkheads as a guide and also to relieve what would be a mega monotonous job when the hull is fully planked.Also it is easier to sand smooth prior to fitting the wales above and below this section. NMBROOK Posted August 2, 2015 Author Share #565 Posted August 2, 2015 Thank you Brian and Bob I purchased boxwood 'stringing' from Original Marquetry in the UK.It comes in various square sizes from 3.2mm down to 0.8mm which is what I used in this instance.It easily fits in the drawplates largest hole.It comes in 1 metre lengths.The first ten or so holes in the drawplate progressively remove the corners,then the diameter starts to be reduced.Had I wanted larger nails,then I would have to use larger section.These nails are 31 thou which is a reasonably snug fit for a 0.8mm hole.I plan on taking the nails down to whatever works best in a 0.5mm hole for the decks etc. Kind Regards Nigel Omega1234, GuntherMT, mtaylor and 3 others 6 Quote Currently working on Royal Caroline Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
