NAUTICAL RESEARCH & MODEL SHIP SOCIETY OF CHICAGO

NAUTICAL RESEARCH & MODEL SHIP SOCIETY

MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

Saturday, March 8, 2014

The Nautical Research and Model Ship Society of Chicago club was formed in 1928.  Our members are interested in static scale models of period sailing ships, steel Navy, and steam-powered ships, tugs and inland water boats.  The varied interests of our members make for some very interesting discussions and presentations at our meetings.  We publish a monthly newsletter called The Fife Rail.  We welcome anyone with an interest in scale models of ships and boats.

We meet on the second Saturday night each month at 7:30 PM at President Kurt Van Dahm’s house in Westmont.  Call Kurt at (630) 689-6237 or kurt at modelshipyard dot com for further information.

The meeting this month will feature a program on TABLE SAW USE & SAFETY.  If you have been attending meetings you know that this topic will be of interest to all – and the latter part will be of great (personal) interest to a couple of us.  The program will deal with using our miniature table saws efficiently and safely.  Just like their big brothers these saws can be extremely dangerous if used improperly or without respect.  The program will show how to use the saws to make the typical cuts as well as some less common but very useful cuts.  To date no fingers have been sacrificed to the saws within the group though a couple of good scars are evident – their owners have agreed to share their stories with the group.

Don’t forget to bring your current project for the Ships on Deck session, open to all to bring their latest project to show and discuss.  If you have a problem bring it along and somebody will most likely have a solution for you.  We will have lots of time available for discussions – often the best part of the meeting.

The meeting this month will feature a program on BOOKS vs INTERNET FOR RESEARCH.  There are advantages to both sources of research materials - a round table discussion will give all in attendance the opportunity to relate their experiences and share research resources with the group.

Don’t forget to bring your current project for the Ships on Deck session, open to all to bring their latest project to show and discuss.  If you have a problem bring it along and somebody will most likely have a solution for you.  We will have lots of time available for discussions – often the best part of the meeting.
