I found the wood section of the forums and will be replacing it all with walnut strips from Hobby Mill. I kind of suspect what I was using was walnut anyways.

If you want sapele, I know that model_ship_builder on ebay (listed in this forum on a place to source wood here in the US) lists Sapele as one of the woods he has in his planking and lumber sets for ships.

Here is a link to his ebay store if you are interested - http://www.ebay.com/usr/tallships_model_builder

Prices are in the 20-22 dollar range for 60 pieces of whatever size you like (can mix/match woods and sizes) plus shipping. I got some wood from him to test for various things and he shipped quick and sent more than asked for.

Hobbymill is great (I have both boxwood and holly on order from Jeff), but his forecast deliveries are now out to January, and for the use you have here, not sure you need his precision and finish.

Here is the current state of this build. It is on hold due to my 4.5 yo daughter getting a hold of a black felt tip marker and making some enhancements. I was able to sand much of it off, but there is still work to be done. I am also still stick on the wood business from above. I started a mother model in the meantime.

Question for you swift builders out there watching, any ideas on how to flatten the end if the piece of copper wire used for the chain plates of the main and foremast? I am then to drill a 1mm hole in it. Swashing in my vice only gets me so far....

I think I squashed the thing in my vice grips tightened down full. It isn't pretty, but it was flat enough to drill that hole.

That was my first model and I had no idea about quality. I just now looked at it and realized I could have filed the flattened edges of the squashed end to make them look neater, but it didn't dawn on me back then.

Searching on the site I found that if you heat brass up, even if it cools down it will be softer, looks like I need a torch of some sort. Also found I might be making an order with micro mark for some appropriate metal working tools. Gotta love new tools!

I've been working on the cabins between getting frustrated with working with brass.  I've never done anything like this.  I am super impressed with myself.  I did not think that veneer would wrap around the edge like it did.IMG_0297.thumb.JPG.0401580aa4177cf7c0b236e6d42072c2.JPG

Nice build thus far!

As to your question, my method is to grip the brass in the flat (not grooved) part of my older needle nosed pliers, the hit the pliers with a hammer several times. Loud, but effective. Just did it today with my Stagecoach build.

A little hammer and anvil turned out best result.  I found those chainplates? To be the hardest part of this build so far. Here's a photo update. Those cabins were way more involved than I anticipated. I have one done and am working on the other. IMG_0304.thumb.JPG.e6a2ab26303f74e0dc10c6e74793c1e8.JPGIMG_0305.thumb.JPG.7d78452bd72a9f861b889e0302298d68.JPGIMG_0306.thumb.JPG.06e59b2f98d798998c9c97c29c970d7f.JPGIMG_0308.thumb.JPG.673887c2df79101411d334a831ffc089.JPGIMG_0309.thumb.JPG.09023525566d6c1d2a8ccb58f4a314aa.JPGIMG_0310.thumb.JPG.764301a1caa1a12be81fa563ad45a0c0.JPG

I have dry fitted the foremast. Finished the aft cabin mostly. Door handles were too much for me. They are actually functional! Lots of CA all over my fingers.IMG_0313.thumb.JPG.8a6f4d5cc47157e1d79ee1010fba1567.JPGIMG_0314.thumb.JPG.35d8ec48ea8672103c1ef83d06ee0ed8.JPG

I powered through to the end. The rigging being pretty simple with pretty good instructions as well.

Officially finished nearly 4 years in the making.
