HMS Vanguard by RMC - FINISHED - Amati/Victory Models - scale 1:72

Recommended Posts

I suppose I will have to get around to putting 'finished' on this log. I will spend some time in January among other things, trying make an ensign thanks to some information Alan (aon) kindly sent me. As we,ll I have a couple of tiny sailors who I may put on the model to illustrate scale. I guess the poop deck is the appropriate place, or else the fore deck looking out at the enemy.

Here is Nelson, though I guess I need to give him an eye patch. He certainly looks a bit grim, though as he's only 22mm high it's understandable.

I am undecided about whether to do a log for the Granado.  There are already two or three excellent logs already and I don't know that I can add much to them.

Hi

What a stunning build! Reading your comments on Nelson and his patch reminded me of this section from Sugden's wonderful two part biography which may be of interest :)

"Legend depicts Nelson with a ridiculous black eyepatch, as if hiding an empty socket, but his many portraits and the few descriptions suggest that time more or less restored the appearance of the injured organ. Only the fine pastel made by Johann Schmidt of Dresden in 1800 depicts the slightly clouded aspect it presented to more intent observers. Nelson’s ‘beauty’ survived, but his vision was irreparably damaged."

- John Sugden, A Dream of Glory, ch XIX.6

So your figure is already an excellent likeness.

Take care

Rob

There was a news article about a painting discovered of Nelson that hadn't been touched up.

He didn't have an eye patch but was blinded in one eye and had a wicked scar above his eyebrow.

Regarding tiny sailors on the model.  I've been thinking about one at the head on the seat of ease to help explain what those boxes are (seriously).

Hi Bob

Me, I would very much like to follow a Granado log of yours.

Seeing what you made of the Vanguard, your Granado should become something well worth her own diary. Not only might your followers learn some new tricks or new views, sometimes it's also nice to see somebody else struggling with the same problems :default_wallbash: I had and hopefully come to good and perhaps different solutions.

And besides that it would be a nice place to chat a bit.

Cheers

Peter

Rob. Thanks for your kind remarks. I'm glad Nelson's eye patch is a myth. Painting one onto my small sailor doesn'y bear thinking about.

Alan.  The seat of ease is genius.  I wish I had thought of it.  Getting a figure with his pants around his ankles may be a problem though.^_^

Peter.  You're right. The really good thing about this site and this hobby is the contact made with people who, in my experience, are invariably helpful and encouraging.  Chatting is a good idea.

Incidentally, I realised this morning at 3.08, that I have not put on the lines to lift the ship's boats.  I'm going to have to get rid of that digital clock.

Alan; I have found a small sailor who is likely to be just about right for the seat of ease.  He has the right posture and certainly looks to be making an effort.:o  I'm painting him at the moment and will post a photo when finished.

Here is what is likely to be the last Vanguard photo - the hoists for the small boats.

Peter.  I have received the Syren gun carriages and for your information have put together the Syren and Caldercraft carriages for Granado.  Obviously the barrel needs to be blackened and the whole thing will be coated with polyurethane. I'm quite pleased with the way it has turned out, though there is of course a down-side.  Removing the charred wood from the laser-cut parts is tedious and time-consuming, and assembly is quite fiddly.  Including time to correct a silly mistake It, took a day more or less for the result you see. Only nine more to do - very gradually.:(

Hi Bob

After seeing your new gun carriages I had to compare them with those on my Granado. I'm sure that the difference will still be  visible even in the mace of details on the finished model and the new things will be well worth the extra effort. Good idea!

Cheers

Peter

Alan: here are a couple of photos that may help you with the 'seat of ease' issue.  My small, rather unhappy sailor needs a bit more work, but that will have to wait a little.  He does, however look better in the flesh (as it were) than the photos suggest. This week is rather busy and his final paint job will have to wait for the new year.  I hope it gives you the idea though - and what a great idea:D

For every one who has looked at this log, or may in the future, a happy Christmas and a happy and healthy new year.

In the new year I will start a Granado log for those who may be interested.

Vanguard is finished- after five or so years.  I have had a beautiful Tasmanian blackwood table made to accommodate it and the result is quite pleasing.  I am now recovering from my near heart attack while carrying it down the stairs. Here are the final photos.

Beautiful build, Bob. Congratulations.  Will be covering her with a clear case to protect it and keep the dust off?

Hi Martin.

I have appropriated Baranov's cathead as best I can. I think it will come out quite well, though nothing is finally tied off at the moment.  A couple of stray threads are to be cut off and a minor adjustment or two are still to be made.  Thanks again for the reference.

The rigging thread through the cathead in the following photo is now more taught.

And I've finally done something about an ensign. I have attached cleats on the side and just above the side galleries. They seem to work.

DSCN2711.thumb.JPG.df501563313c53f423f1832ef165ee0c.JPG

The ensign doesn't look too bad but I think it's a bit heavy and tends to foul some of the other lines.  It is a double thickness (printed on one side and doubled over) so I will see what alternatives may be available (eg: becc).

Try using tin foil. Just print the ensign on a decal and place it on or -if you feel adventurous- paint it directly on the tin foil. Let it dry and then use tweezers to imitate waving.
