Bermuda boat Corsair by WBlakeny - FINISHED - 1:32 - SMALL - First scratch build

Recommended Posts

After the sanding i gave the hull a coating of oil.

I'm really happy with the result.

The treenails became darker with the oil. Much better now.

The planking is far from perfect. But it's better then it was before...

And for once i won't have to paint the hull to hide the planking job.

Start of the planking the cabin floor using a paper template.

post-6790-0-61828600-1465561213_thumb.jpg

First i prepared the planks using a pencil to imitate the caulking.

post-6790-0-78021200-1465561214_thumb.jpg

Then using again a paper template i made the cabin sidewalls.

post-6790-0-42685300-1465561216_thumb.jpg

Afterwards i glued them in place and used some wooden blocks to put some pressure on certain points.

Now on to the margin plank.

I started with making a template out of paper by tracing the hull.

post-6790-0-97166900-1465561520_thumb.jpg

Onto which i drew the different parts for the margin planks.

post-6790-0-97748100-1465561521_thumb.jpg

I cut those out using caution.

post-6790-0-76133000-1465561522_thumb.jpg

And glued them on a piece of Cherry wood using a glue stick (Pritt).

post-6790-0-74131200-1465561523_thumb.jpg

After sawing them out, i needed a sander to get them to close to the line. My scroll saw skills are not so good  :)

The delicate parts i did with file.

The result before placing on the hull.

And finally glueing it in place.

I've continued working on the cabin.

I measured the place where the crossbeam must fit in the planks.

post-6790-0-22122700-1466419521_thumb.jpg

Afterwards after sawing i glued both planks in place and let try dry overnight.

post-6790-0-42157600-1466419524_thumb.jpg

I then made the tree pieces to cross the cabin.

post-6790-0-83002700-1466419525_thumb.jpg

And glued them in place.

I progressed on the cabin.

I made the hatches. They were used to store the cooking gear and other stuff.

First i had to make some dummy beams to provide some support for the hatches. I made those from some scrap plywood on which i matched the curve of the cabin walls.

post-6790-0-92189000-1466660315_thumb.jpg

I glued them in place and let them dry overnight.

post-6790-0-23119300-1466660317_thumb.jpg

After marking the middle of the cabin with the laser i placed some cherry planks.

post-6790-0-91077100-1466660317_thumb.jpg

Then i filled the open spaces with the maple planks.  I had to to taper 5 planks on each side in order to fill it up nicely.

post-6790-0-94770400-1466660318_thumb.jpg

Then using a scraper, and sanding with different grits, I obtained a smooth result.

Chris,

What can I say but, Outstanding!!!!! Your attention, and care to details have made this little beauty a joy to look at. There are many aspects/procedures that you have used on your build that I wish to incorporate in future builds. Many thanks in advance to the assistance you've provided by simply posting your progress.

Pfew... my little corsair has been gathering dust for quite a while now.

Next is the building of the "toe rail".

First I've drilled a whole on the place where i want the supports for the rail. Afterwards i squared them out using a square file.

Corsair-45-1.thumb.jpg.6b498842604cd15da6c7efca2d6fdc50.jpg

Corsair-45-2.thumb.jpg.a503decf15434658f9f94a9de1df493f.jpgCorsair-45-3.thumb.jpg.4eda0ff19b2ec902bfb8853b3a8d1425.jpg

Then the glue goes into the wholes and the supports are put in place. I've used some walnut i had lying around.

After drying overnight, i put in the toe rail. To make that rail I've first drew a template from the profile of the hull.

Corsair-45-7.thumb.jpg.adf7791506106b29d00cfda735a90da4.jpg

After everything dried, i sawed of the extents of the supports and sanded everything smooth. Afterwards I treated the wood with oil.

Thank you Patrick.  You're right, my little Corsair has been neglected.  The Yamato has kept me busy, but now the planking is finished of her hull, i'd like to continue on my Corsair.

Thank you Nils

@ Christian   I'm wondering myself :)

It has always been my problem, i want to start too much models.  I have a Deagostini SotS and a hms Victory here. I also started a Jacynthe of which i have all the bulkheads ready. And on top of that i have a Hachette Bismarck also ready to start.  I must confess,  I'm a shipmodel addict!

I made the pintles and gudgeons for her rudder.

I started with cutting off some strips of brass.

Corsair-46-1.thumb.jpg.ff1125cc155e3daaca1920af27a7f241.jpg

I plied the strip on which i applied some flux. On the flux i put the nail which i want to silver solder to the strip.

Corsair-46-2.thumb.jpg.09a8820a22677b99081ac7b6c6a76bce.jpg

On top of it all i've put a tiny piece of silver solder.

Corsair-46-3.thumb.jpg.40557f5578cdcb68fdfdfbd7f1aad32d.jpg

The three pintles ready.
