I am single!!! ;)

My mom is 92. She lives with me. Part of the family issues I mentioned before were because of her health. And that is HER bed. :)

Small update. From now on, once the hull is fully planked and work on deck furniture is in progress, I may do updates more often.

Here I am making a wooden door, to substitute the plastic one supplied in the kit.

post-975-0-31175600-1459863436_thumb.jpg

Wooden door placed on cabin, and cabin glued to deck.

post-975-0-64074900-1459863504_thumb.jpg

Here I am gluing some planks side by side, to make the part where the capstan is, according to the drawing below.

The metal chimneys (part No. 100) in the kit are awful. Still don't know what to do with them, or how to make them myself.

Another update. Told ya' they are coming more often :)

I'm working on two platforms that support the capstan and two chimneys.

After gluing the planks side by side I want to square the sides to a 90º. angle.

This tool helps a lot with that. Only drawback is that the sandpaper wears off at the same spot all the time, so it looses it's 'bite' quite soon.

post-975-0-77265800-1459950330_thumb.jpg

This is close enough for me. :)

post-975-0-78870400-1459950361_thumb.jpg

I was hesitant about making those corner joints at 45º angle, as it supposed more work that just plain 90º, but I took the plunge. They were a bit more difficult than initially thought.

post-975-0-82999400-1459950470_thumb.jpg

This tool again proved an excellent choice for getting those 45º angles right.

post-975-0-08639400-1459950651_thumb.jpg

The 2 platforms already assembled. A bit of cleaning still to do but I will leave that for tomorrow once the glue is totally cured.

I'm happy with the outcome. :)

Looks good Ulises - Have you tried using a spacer of card/paper etc to lift the sanding surface, then filp to expand the sanding area?  Still will only be using a fraction of the surface but better than nothing?

Another quick update:

The platform I was working on almost finished. I say almost because it is missing the two chimneys that go on the darker square. The ones in the kit are just awful, so I ordered some replacements. Temporary nails are shown to hold the part while the glue dries.

post-975-0-95073500-1460126409_thumb.jpg

Work on the gratings continues

post-975-0-37581500-1460126582_thumb.jpg

A VERY important and necessary step when making these gratings: a good soak in strong diluted white or (better) wood glue. These parts will be cut to fit in their place. If they are not perfectly glued at every joint, they will fall apart.

post-975-0-03974500-1460126709_thumb.jpg

A good batch of gratings already made. These come from Model Shipways and are perfectly cut. Highly recommended. My experience tells me that the notches in kit supplied gratings are poorly cut, and this makes assembling them a nightmare.

post-975-0-59303700-1460126841_thumb.jpg

On with this next step. This is a 170 x 35 mm frame with a lot of work in the insides.

post-975-0-75438600-1460126960_thumb.jpg

Work on the frame starts. (Look ma', not afraid of 45º angles anymore.  :D  :D )

It was just a happy and fortunate coincidence that the width of my ruler was exactly the same as the width of the inside frame.  :)

post-975-0-93575700-1460127148_thumb.jpg

Frame ready and just dry placed on its spot to check for fitting. Perfect fit.  :)

Interesting gluing technique.  Will the glue affect the wood when it comes time to stain/poly them; or, will you sand them back a bit first?  They certainly look good, and stronger for the process.

cheers

Definitely the dried glue will prevent the stain to penetrate the wood. If it's too important, you may try to stain first and glue later, although the process of staining may disturb the unglued assembling of the gratings, which is the core of the technique.

I may paint my gratings flat black, so it wouldn't matter here.

Update April 12 2016. BTW April 10 2014 was the day I started this build log, and April 11 actual work on my ship began. So today is exactly 2 years and one day that I started this ship. :)

Central hatchway (whatever that means :D) is completed except for a couple of ladders that go down at the stern side (left in the photos) opening. I don't like the kit supplied ladders so I will substitute them later.

I decided to paint the gratings flat black. This may or may not be authentic or historically correct, but I really like how they look.

BTW these gratings had to endure a heavy treatment of sawing and sanding to make them fit. So, the gluing technique I described before, really works.

Here comes the embarrasing part and asking for advise.

post-975-0-81024000-1460673784_thumb.jpg

The opening at the far left should have been next to the grating, not the end of the frame.

Options: Do it all again. Out of the question. I have no more gratings.

"Invent" a small grating there and do the opening in the right place.

"Invent" a hatch there " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " "

"Cut, rotate and paste" Outer corners won't have a 45º angle of which I am most proud of.  :D  :D  :D

What would you do???

Thanks in advance.

Whoopsie. I would cut out the wood next to the gratings and cover up the hole at the end of the frame.
