Royal Louis 1780 by Ulises Victoria - FINISHED - Mamoli - Scale 1/90 - French 126-gun ship

Recommended Posts

Hey Karl. Yes, there are eyebolts in the kit.... too big.... too gold colored. The advantage is that the twisted portion in my own provides additional mechanical and glue grip.

Yes... the wheels were included in kit.

I don't know the name of that wooden v-shaped blocks they used to put under the gun barrels, but if you decided to add them, you would  have the guns pointing horizontally like we use to represent them.  But whatever you decide to do, the whole model, and in particular the guns, look fantastic. Congratulations.

G'day Ulisus

Sorry I've been away for a long time. Had a few personal problems and I'm slowly getting back to read all the logs that I've missed.

I have been very tired lately and my energy level is low.

Bloody marvelous on everything mate that I have seen and I spent a few enjoyable hours reading your  log. Well done havagoodone mate

Your cannons look amazing! I rigged with the rope around the cannon bell only. Too fiddly to add the others you have done.  Well done, Nice neat work.

Thank you guys. Your words are really appreciated.

JP and Pat. No, I will not be adding quoins (I suppose that's what those v-shaped pieces are called.) Too late for that. Barrels and carriages are 3 point glued already. I'm not going to take the chance to unglue them which represents a potential disaster. I forgot about this feature, so that will have to do.

Greg: Thanks for the bunch of likes, and for your kind words. I hope your problems are solved and that you can continue with your project

Scott: At one time I thought about doing exactly the same. I tried to rig the cannons in my past build, The Vasa, with 2mm blocks , which turned to be impossible (for me!). So I decided to take a simpler approach with the RL, and just rig without blocks. It worked fine for me! BTW you have an impressive list of finished projects!!!

Thank you guys!!!

I think I might take on board what you have done on my next build. Never thought about rigging without blocks.

I have a rule as to finish one build before starting another.  Keep up the great work.

Hello all.

As some of you already know, my mom passed away at the beginning of this month, so things have been hectic to say the least. The legal stuff, her will and testament, what are we going to do with her house and all the stuff in it, her jewelry, etc. For obvious reasons my mood has been less that cheerful. BUT, life has to go on and I finally managed to finish 12 upper deck cannons as you will see.

I have to admit that I was hesitant about getting in the trouble of making those rope coils, but now I am SOOO glad I did!!! :)

I used a piece of masking tape to roll the coils over it. I used a very strong glue tape so I had a really hard time taking them off the tape. If you are copying this method, I'd suggest you use a less tacky tape like Scotch tape or something similar.

"Bath" the coils generously with diluted white glue. I did two coats for greater strength. The surface you are going to let to be seen is the one underneath.

Also remember to coil half of them clockwise and the other half counter-clockwise.

Here they are. 12 upper deck cannons rigged and with their complements (coils and cannonball racks) in place.

Hola Ulises:

As I mention you before, we are deeply sorry about you lost your Mom, but you are right, life must go on.

Your idea of how to coil the ropes are clever and they see very nice.

G'day Ulisus

I'm so sorry to hear about your late mother. I know just how you feel. My father passed away just 5 months ago and it hurts do deeply.

I'm glad that you have gotten back to you incredible model, it will take your mind off things only for a while. And each day it becomes very slightly easier.

The coils look great.

God bless

Greg

Update May 2 2017

Finished placing, rigging and adding cannonball racks to all cannons over the decks of the starboard side.

Work has been slow but steady. Hope to find more time soon :)

Hey Arthur.

I said that 30 cannons on deck "had to be rigged" . There are actually 34 cannons on deck that "have to be rigged",   but 4 cannons under the stairs were rigged only on one side...

And then there is one more hidden under the last deck. If you look closely in the 3rd photo at the right, you will see only a part of the rigging rope.

Oh well... never mind :)

Thanks for your comment. It means you are paying attention and that is priceless. :)

Update as of May 19 2017.

Milestone reached! ALL 126 cannons are placed and those which needed it, rigged.

This took me a very long time because some of the triangular cannonball racks went flying from my tweezers and landed in that parallel universe we all know, but never been in. :)

So I decided I would not go any further until I somehow make some of them.

Here you see some failed attempts and at the bottom 4 pieces satisfactorily made. The far right one is the original. I attempted several methods and finally what worked was using that pink thingie you see in the photo. That is dentist's wax. I managed to make the molds in them and  used 30 min epoxy to fill them. I had to put the pieces in boiling water to get rid of the wax, but finally I managed to make 4 acceptable pieces.

591ef38f4095b_RoyalLouis(1716).thumb.JPG.d6fe8831e4511968c967e53f059a786f.JPG

So with that out of the way, I finished placing all cannons on all decks. There are 126 cannons: 70 dummies in the 2 lower rows, of which I placed only 60. I left 5 randomly empty gunports on each side. I plan to put closed gunports on there to break monotony.

Then there are 56 csmaller cannons that went on carriages. Of those, 28 had to be fully rigged, 6 half rigged and 22 with no rigging at all, being these totally hidden under the decks.

There you go... Here the photos and a general view of my ship as of today.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences, these type of logs make the learning process and our development in the hobby so much quicker and less painful.

It's also a great motivator, makes me want to get out my Endeavor again after 10 years.......although I am a bit scared to see what the termites might have done :/

You are not paying attention.  There is one missing coil at the right of the third cannon in the 5th photo. Can be spotted on photos 2 and 4 also. Shame on you! :D:D:) Just kidding, my friend. Your comments are ALWAYS very welcome.  (Coil is added now. Don't know why I skipped it!)

Small update

Hello all. As of June 16 I'm done with the life boats.

Progress has been so slow. I am in the process of selling my mom's house where I had a blanket closet as a workshop. But I am also in the process of buying a new house for me!

I just found a little house within my budget and in the area I've always wanted to live. Its 38 minutes away (with no traffic) from my actual home.

There are 3 bedrooms in the second floor of which I only need one! :) Guess what the other 2 will be used for???!!! YESSSS Finaly a house all of my own and for myself only. I can put my shipbuilding workshop in the living room if I want to! hehehe.

Thanks for visiting. During moving time, which I expect to start in about 15 days, work will come to a full stop for some time.

Edit. I'm going to try to finish the gunport lids before start the moving process. If I do it, I will start the rigging stage in my new place :):):)
