hms triton; first attempt at plank on frame

Recommended Posts

Full hull version of triton is very high on my to do list!

That sounds great Mick, keep it up if you have finished the cross section. I’m sure, about your outstanding craftsmanship it will be a great model.

Hi juergen

Thank you again! Still have an awful lot to learn especially with regards to interpreting and working from lines plans. Currently trying to get my head around a line drawing of HMS cruiser from the nmm. Good job of got a plentiful supply of drawing paper I think there will be a lot of waste!

Looking forward to further updates on your triton, I shall be watching with great interest.

Cheers ......mick

Hi rob

Thanks for the vote of confidence! This is my first attempt at building even part of a ship using this method. For many years I've studied the work of some serious craftsmen thinking I will never be able to do that!

The one thing about this site is its full of very helpful guys and gals only too willing to lend a hand.im fairly pleased with the way things are turning out,its just a matter of taking plenty of time, studying those plans carefully and plodding on!

Of course it wouldn't even have been possible without the hard work of the guys who developed the plans for us!

Cheers....mick

hi all

been beavering away, inbetween getting the sloop finished, and have managed to get some more done on the cross section.

external planking above the whale completed in pyrenean boxwood , treenials in castello box.

internal bulwarks planking also done in satine bloodwood. treenails in pear. i was going to use pink ivory but the darn stuff has so much interlocked and wavy grain its bloomin difficult to thickness by hand , no matter how sharp the plane.

i think im trying to justify buying jims thickness sander!!!!

currently in the process of cutting some holly for the external planking below the whale.

bits built ready to be installed.

deck hatches built and gratings fitted.

any and all comments welcome!!!!!!!

p.s. the last photo shows what happens if you dont think ahead.having glued everthing together feeling quite pleased with myself it came time to trial fit the bits............doh!!!.......wheres the isopropanol!!

hi all

just a quick update to show current progress.

pretty much finished with the majority of the woodworking just got to make the various ladders and gun carriages.

ordered some brass canons from rb models in poland as ive just got rid of my cheap chinese made lathe.

considering purchasing a peatol/taig , reviews seem good, any thoughts?

metal work for the gangboard supports , stanchions for entry ropes and stanchions for gangboard rails are made and blackened but not overly happy with the blackening process so they will be cleaned off and redone.

cheers.....mick

Hi all

Just a quick question. Does anyone know what the size (diameter) of the breeching rope should be? I will more than likely using some of chucks rope , if I've got the right size. I think I'm having a DOH!!!!! day as I can't seem to find any reference to actual scale sizes.......probably staring me right in the face!

Cheers......mick

Hi Bob

Many thanks. I did look inthe swan practicum books but the info was for 6 pounders and quoted as " the length should be 3 times the length of the guns bore and 4 inches in circumference which equates to approx 1 1/4 inches in diameter". The guns for triton are 9 lbs if I remember rightly with a bore of 4 inches? So the breeching rope is 0.95 of 4 inches? Almost 4 inches then , so if I make the diameter 1 1\2 inchesi shouldn't be too far of the mark? I hope!

Thanks for the quick reply Bob

Cheers.....mick

hi all

first post for a while.not had much time for modelmaking unfortunately.

but have found time to start on the gun tackles.

blocks are single 3mm pearwood from chucks emporium of goodies.

reading through swan class books....a great source of inspiration and information.....blocks were stropped and served.

i have attempted to replicate this.

firstly a length of fine brass wire was annealed and wrapped round the appropriate diameter form, in this case a length of 6mm brass bar.

rings were then cut off and silver soldered. 0.1mm thread was then wrapped round to represent the serving.

the oversized ring was then squished round the block so that a beckett was formed either end.....one for the hook and one for the lanyard.

photos enclosed.....comments and critisms greatly appreciated.

man ropes for the entry stanchions also been started.

thats all for now folks

cheers....mick
