HMS Victory by Heinz746 - Caldercraft

Good evening to my friends all over the world :-) !

Again I have to say thank you for all your nice comments!!!

After finishing the chain on the rudder (sorry, the picture is too large to upload - I will make a new one for the next update) I started with the bows over the gun-ports.

Of course I could not use the sheet pieces of the kit. I have to remake them with wood. I used the sheet pieces as a stencil and build nearly 10 of them. I was´t really happy with the look. Compared with the original, the waves look to angular. I decided to build them more curvy.

On the first picture you can see my first attempt (the 2 bows in front) and beside them the new ones.

I think the new ones are a little bit bigger than the originales are. But - in my opinion - they look good.

A nice new-year-eve to all modelers!

And a successful new year!

Hello modellers,

I finished the gunports on the backboard side. The hinges are slightly larger, than the original. But nevertheless I am very happy with the result. This also applies for the cords , which I have attached to a small ring at the bottom. The rings are made from an old anchor chain of another model. I painted them black. Unfortunately they are not clearly visible, because of the black background.

With every step I take, I feel my model gets more alive. I don´t know how to explain. But I am sitting here at the table, my head on the tabletop, and staring on my model. I would not be surprised if the gunports would suddenly open :-)

Does anyone know this? Or am I going crazy?

Greetings and the best wishes for the weekend

Looks great Heinz , I envy your workmanship . As you will know i left the ropes of my gunports as i just couldn,t get them to look right maybe it was because they were open or more likely i lack the ability ??. You seem to have got it just right !!!   As for being crazy ,sometimes it helps .......

avsjerome2003, Ian, Boyd, many many thanks for your kind words! They are oil for my engine  :D .

Boyd, I had to look your build log over again. I did not realized, that you left the ropes of your gunport. That is too pity. I really hope you will try it again. If I can help you with my pictures... I would be very proud!

I do not think my skills are so much better than that from you or other modelers. Maybe sometimes I have different ideas on how I'm doing things. And maybe this is because I am not so experienced and have to find these new ways.  No nonsense, I needed 2 or 3 hours to make the first rope. I did not know how to hold it and how to wrap around the black cord.

I have a picture in my head, of how it should look. And than I try to make it this way. So many times I sit here the whole day, don´t know how to make things. And at the end of the day I only know how it does NOT work.

Boyd, you have build a very good model. And for me it´s so much incentive to watch your build log (and of course those from all other modelers too). For me, these models are alive. In my head I see them moving on the water, see the action on deck and the gunports opening, etc.  Now I a get to the point, I can see this on my model too. That is what I tried to explain in my last review.

What I try to say: Boyd, please try it again to make the ropes on your gunports. maybe it´s more difficult, because your gunports are open. But you see the result. I think you agree when I say that it´s worth another try :-)

Thanks again to all of you!

Hello friends!

I would like to show you, what I have done in the last weeks.

As you can see, I have started with the gratings on the upper deck. First I have made them with the wood from my kit. It does not look bad, but nevertheless I was not really happy. The color seems to be too bright. I had the idea to work it with the black wood putty, but that does´t work well. In contrast to the planks of my deck, the frames only look dirty and not old and used.

The strips for the cannonballs does´t look good too. They had a different color than the frames. And the color changes in the middle of the strips.

I decided to make them all with my own dark walnut wood. I did the same with the stairs.

Unfortunately I did the frames with false measurements, so I did it a third time :-). But now I am happy with the result!

Now I have started with the cannons. I am still at the beginning. But I love to see them standing on my deck :-)

Best wishes to all of you and a happy sunday!!!

-Heinz-

Hi Heinz,

That looks very, very good. Nice clean, precise joints on the gratings. I love the wood too. I notice that you have a floor board below and a ceiling board just above the gun ports. I think I'll rip my waterways out and replace it with planks like you have and that I've seen others use (the kit instructions do not make mention of these that I am aware). The cannons look great as well. Will you be blackening the barrels or leave them as is?

Best, Ian

Hi Ian,

thank you much for your kind words.

You are right, the floor and ceiling board is not shown in the kit instruction. But I saw it on many pictures of the real Victory. And of course I saw it at the model of Gil Middleton. That is why I decided to make it like this. Did you notice that there is a walnut strip below the floor board? That should be the water way. It´s a 2x2 mm piece. I have made it before planking the deck, so there is only a very little part of it visible. I love this detail :-)

Of course I will blackening the barrels. I have only down the first steps on the cannons. But I am very glad that you already like them at this point of making  :D .

Just  a very small update with 2 missing pictures of the pump and the clamps.

The pump is made of oak and walnut without this ugly sheet handle; the clamps are made of walnut wood. I don´t use the pieces of the kit.

I hope you like it!

Hello friends,

I continue to rig the  cannons on the upper deck. First I have made the big rope going around the cannon. Now I started to make the pulleys on the left and right sight.

Every parts are so small that I decided to make a few pictures to show how I manage to build them.

I use the chain links of an old chain and paint them black. Sometimes I have to rework it with black color when everything is fixed. Unfortunately I had a little accident and touched the rope with the black color on the right wheel. Damn! I could not clean it without destroying it. You can see the mistake on the last picture.

I hope you like the result (instead of the black fleck of color, of course)

Greetings and wishes for a nice weekend

:-)

Heinz

Hello Heinz..

Your model is coming along magnificently.  The ropework around the cannons is perfect and the deck looks terrific.

I wonder if you have had a chance to look at our HMS Bounty site as you mentioned that you would like to see "your" copperplates on the hull of our model.  Here is a link to our dite if you are interested:

Hi Jerry!

Thank you very much for your nice words!

I followed the work of "your Admiral" very attentive. I like the bounty very much. In fact I have bought a book about the bounty and the real story of her.

I am very pleased about what Charlene has made of my copperplates! And I think it was a good decision to give them to you :-)

All the best for both of you !

Great work Heinz. Don't worry about the rope. if you did not mention I would not have noticed it, had to look for it. That is because you know about it and your eyes go there.

Thank you Robert!

I know that you are right. Other people have to search to find that mistake. But - as you said - it is in my mind. For me it´s like a turn signal shining into my eyes... :-)

By the way: I continue to build the next 14 pulleys. "Only" 74 to be done right now. Oh my God...   I am thinking about changing my hobby :-)

Hello my friends,

I finished the cannons on the upper deck. Time for an update :-)

Although there are still a few things to do on the upper deck, I decided to start with the next deck. I knew before, that this will mean some new problems for me, because I removed the wooden edges on the frames, as I rebuild the side walls (please look at post no. 5 and 6 on my bulldog).. How should I fix the bows on which the deck will lay?

I decided to fix all these bows on the bottom of the deck and lay the whole thing on the top of the side wall. I am very pleased about this solution. Contrary to my fears, everything seemed very stable. Luckily, you can not see from the outside that the bows hanging in the air, rather than to support the deck :-).

Now I have time to take care of the missing things on the upper deck. But first I have to read plans and look very much in other forums ...

Greetings to all of you!

- Heinz -

p.s.: I do not know why all pictures are messed up today. Sorry for that!

Fantastic Heinz, I've been waiting for your update with rapt anticipation - and I am not disappointed! Did you actually make those camber beams out of two pieces and join them with scarph joints? They look fabulous. Those cannons look like they are ready to do business!

Hello Ian, my friend!

Now I have to disappoint you :-)...

No, I did not made them out of two pieces. I took them from the kit and worked with my "old" technic. I make a slit and fill it with my black wood filler to make the slit visible. I put the wood filler over the whole camber beams to give them that dark and dirty look. I love the effect!

Thank you for all your nice words!!!

Never mind you'd never know the difference. Just so you know I finally took my first step towards caulking deck planks on my catboat. But it is not a technique that would work in most instances. I will be starting back on my Victory in the next few days now that I have the material I've been waiting for.

Hello friends,

another little update.

I took the next step and fixed the deck. Of the 30 guns that I made, suddenly only 10 are visible :-(((

I have put in the masts temporarily, because I was afraid that they would not fit later. And I decided to change something in the way I build the deck, compared to the deck below. As I build the deck below, I first do the planking and then put the gratings with frames on top. I had some problems because the deck is slightly curved. You could not see the slits where it does not fit perfectly, because of the cannonballs beside them.

Now I want to first build the gratings and then do the planking around.

Or should I start with the ship´s side. That would give me the chance to finish the second planking of the hull.

Maybe someone can give me advice at this point...

Best wishes to all of you !

- Heinz -
