Black Queen by Alex S - FINISHED - Mini Mamoli - Scale 1:135 - First build

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I am 14 and I am a electric wheelchair user and I am not very strong.

My carer will be doing all the physical work like lifting the glue and cutting the timbers.

I wanted to build a wooden model ship like my carer Antony UK.

We started the black pearl but the magazines arrived for the first few weeks then nothing so I cancelled the subscription.

I have just bought this from Cornwall Model Boats.

The Black Queen.  http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/mamoli_MM60.html

post-6962-0-86623100-1408700204_thumb.jpg

It's the Mini Mamoli series and it's a beginners model.

Solid hull is a nice way for me to start.

My carer said that I should do a build log so it might help other people to build this model.

That's enough about me :)

And the timber.

The Hull.

The instructions are quite poor considering that they need to be interpreted by beginners model..

Trying to read through the instructions.

post-6962-0-65263600-1408700237_thumb.jpg

Starting the build.

I sanded the hull being careful not to sand the edges that are deck level as I wanted these square.

post-6962-0-14686200-1408700251_thumb.jpg

I then added a strip of 3X3 on the stern to give the correct angle. No 3X 3 supplied.

post-6962-0-03251800-1408700258_thumb.jpg

Next I have cut the planks to length. The instructions ask for 15 mm long planks for the decks. I made them 25mm long.

post-6962-0-13503900-1408700265_thumb.jpg

Planks that are 15mm long and 3mm wide don't look right.

Next I added the deck edges. Only 2 as seen on the photo.

post-6962-0-80710400-1408700272_thumb.jpg

This allows me to overlap the edge of the deck with the planks.

I will trim this later after the planking is complete.

Then add the other edge strip.

The Planks were glued to paper in the correct pattern with PVA glue.

post-6962-0-05529700-1408700283_thumb.jpg

I will be doing a little bit each day during the holiday.

Hi.

Alex is really enjoying this build. Wants to do the next stage as soon as the he completes one.

The kit is quite good and the hull is well machined. Some slight adjustments were done to round off the Bow area.

Just done a lot this afternoon and he is doing the write up now.

Took him 3 and half hours to type his first post.

So don't expect a post today :)

Regards Antony.

Alex this is an outstanding example of the sort of care and nurturing that we are capable of. I am sure that your carer Antony will also learn a great deal from you as you work together on this wonderful project. I have no doubt that you will continue on as you gain skills and become an accomplished shipbuilder. I will enjoy following your progress.

Hi.

Many thanks four likes and help.

I have glued the decks into place.

post-6962-0-07480100-1408790603_thumb.jpg

Not forgetting the holes for the Masts.

Then trimmed the excess decking off.

post-6962-0-70079000-1408790630_thumb.jpg

Antony made up some small doors to add onto this.

post-6962-0-70797600-1408790614_thumb.jpg

Next I added the bulkheads between the deck levels.

post-6962-0-04751600-1408790626_thumb.jpg

post-6962-0-99889000-1408790635_thumb.jpg

Antony was not happy to use the timber suppled with the kit so he made up the bulwarks with plywood.

post-6962-0-13581600-1408790641_thumb.jpg

We used brass nails to hold the bulwarks in place while the glue dries.

post-6962-0-57197400-1408790645_thumb.jpg

Antony says we can file the heads away later.

Thanks Alex S.

Hi Alex

Just came across your log. Your Prince is looking good. Making things - any thing - is a great way to spend time. Sometimes frustrating but more often than not it is very rewarding, I'm glad to see you are enjoying this craft and I'm pleased that you chose to make a ship. Keep it up mate!

Cheers

Alistair

Hi.

Many thanks for your encouraging :)  Sometimes I need it.

As you can see we have started the rigging.

We started by adding the standing rigging then we added the rat lines.

This is the test run :)

post-2328-0-18634700-1410112895_thumb.jpg

I made a jig for the spacing of the art lines.

post-2328-0-04463500-1410112843_thumb.jpg

post-2328-0-99447500-1410112859_thumb.jpg

Then we painted pva glue onto the lines and placed the jig with the ropes spaced out.

post-2328-0-24649500-1410112871_thumb.jpg

This is what they looked like after removing the jig.

post-2328-0-65031600-1410113300_thumb.jpg

Then we started on making the sails.

post-2328-0-59493300-1410112880_thumb.jpg

We used a piece of scrap MDF board and placed a copy of the plans onto it. Then we covered it in Cling Film (Cooking Film).

Then the cloth was stretched evenly over the plans.

Then drawing pins were used to hold the cord taunt while pva glue was brushed onto the cord and the outer edge of the sail.

post-2328-0-45573500-1410112889_thumb.jpg

This is how it looked after removing the drawing pins.

post-2328-0-02548400-1410112906_thumb.jpg

Just cut out rough then trimmed with sharp scissors.

post-2328-0-70508700-1410112915_thumb.jpg

Will add the sails to the ship after marking the stitching and attaching them to the yards.

Thanks for following my build.

That's a neat trick for getting the rope along the edge of the sails.  Look forward to seeing how it turns out when finished.  I haven't decided if I'm going to do sails on my ship yet, as the sewing doesn't look like much fun at all.

Hi.

 A update.. and the finish.

A few photos of the finished Ship.

The hardest part for me was the rigging as my hands are not very nimble.

The painting was OK and we did this without struggling.

I enjoyed building the Black Queen.

Well thanks for all the very supportive messages and the likes :)

The base board is cherry with a huge knot in. Not usable by Antony my carer.

But I like the pattern.

Alex -

The Black Queen certainly turned out very nicely.  I say 'great job' to you and Anthony,  I think the cherry baseboard adds an interesting touch - almost looks like the ship is sailing over the waves if you look at it just right.  Congratulations on a job well done!
