Ha nice - thanks!  I used the 1, 2 and 5 cents coins for the shields, and am interested in the snakes and the bulls - although my son has to decide in the end. Your only money ( :) ) helped a lot in determing the size!

I had a look on the website you mentioned - but couldn't find these decalls. Can you be more specific where to find them?

And off-topic on this topic - but promised - the painted version of the lantern for the East Indiaman:

Top painted in dark brown copper - lantern in yellow plus earth grey shade over it. I'm not satisfied yet about the painting.

Hmm strange that you couldn't find them. They are exacly on this link http://store.warlordgames.com/collections/greeks

You just need to scroll down, they are somewhere near the bottom under the name Greek Hoplite shield designs waterslide transfers. (thats a direct link to product)

But if the link doesent work than go to the site  warlordgames.com ---> then pick category Hail Caesar 3000BC - 1500AD ---> select category GREEKS

The decals are listed somewhere near the bottom/middle

And by the way, if you want plastic shields you can easily find greek shields online in different scales (or maybe you enjoy more making your own out of coins)

It's been quite a while since my last post on the trireme.... sorry.

Started again with two cent coins - collected them via lokal stores and started again to make them convex, tinned them and soldered a little grip on the backside. Thus the shields could be hung on a pole on the ship's side to protect the sailors during sailing, and could be easily taken off to use as shield in man to man fights.

My last post here was in januari, and now we're talking september.

Haven't done nothing in the meantime though.

In januari I started the scratch build Duyfken 1595 - finished it in July and made it into a model kit which is now available:

I think I should do something on the Trireme again...

You really think so ... I thought it nice and quiet ... :P;):D

P.s. I like the shape of the Duyfken, looks like an interesting kit, big though

I saw them building the full-sized replica in Fremantle some years ago. I've still got a bit of oak they made from an off-cut with the name 'Duyfken' stamped on it. A rather treasured possession. Such a pretty ship.

@Carl,  Size of the model: approx. 65 cm long (including sprit), 55 cm high, 25 cm width - which is actually a very reasonable size. Not to big to fill the whole mantelpiece, but also not to small to get lost in the corner.

@Steven, she is a pretty cute ship, indeed! I was very pleased by the shape and looks of it during my construction.

If I find some time I will start an after-build topic about the Duyfken.

Vivian (and all the others),

Thank you for all the likes. This topic is a bit messed up due to the fact I am currently building three ships at the same time...

Beside all the other projects I am doing I just did something on the Trireme as well (again). The shields (60 of them) have been made, painted and given a personal touch. One side of the ship is now done in the way as described earlier in this topic.

I sanded a sharp tip at the side-end of small piece of oak 3x3 mm (roughly 1 cm length) and glued this pole onto the deck. The shield has a handle on the backside and this fits onto the sharp end of the pole. In this way the shields hang loose on the side, so they could easily be taken of when needed during battle. In my case the shields are glued onto the pole so they stay in place.

But mind you: there is no evidence whatsoever that this was done in real. It is just my imagination that this could have been done in this way (and it gives a nice extra to the model).

Modelling is a lot of standing for me (I don't like sitting and doing things).

Standing in the kitchen, doing some art work:

Hans, could you post a photo of the back of the shields so we can see the way they are fixed? And maybe a shield that's been removed from the ship?

Thanks,

Steven

Made them with my cell phone, so not the highest quality - sorry.

Backside of the shield. These are in fact 2-cent coins - made convex - tinned and then soldered a small brass handle onto it.

On the ship itself I have placed poles - with a sharp end sanded to it:

IMAG1875.thumb.jpg.3c854bc96d8b68369c832152555c8162.jpg

And the shield can be put with its handle over this pole:

IMAG1876.thumb.jpg.963d959ade37adff68b6b07a890ba1ab.jpg

It looks a bit fuzzy due to the glue. Normally it should not be glued of course, but I don't want them to get lost during building etc.

As I am working on three ships at the same time it all goes a bit slower (beginning of May we have a little show with ancient sailing ships in Rotterdam, NL, and I want to show four vessels which all have to be in some state of finish).

The Trireme fits very good to this show - as she has one of her sails attached:

Hello Messis - thank you! The oars are something which will be done somewhere in the end of the build. So you have to wait for some more time - sorry!

I am currently working on three different vessels, so it goes all a little bit slow.

There's quite a lot of pictorial evidence for the shape of ancient Greek oars - mostly from pottery images. If I remember rightly, they had blades of a very similar shape to modern ones.

All you readers might have noticed this build is not really updated every week (or so). This is because I am very busy on creating the third model in my range of Dutch 17th century ships. This time I am building quite a big one:  De Zeven Provinciën from 1665 - the flagship of Michiel Adriaansz. de Ruyter.

I hope to start a build log on this one within short time, but as the plan is to launch her as a model kit end of this year (short before Christmas) this might take some more time. I am very occupied in finishing the model and preparing the box and her contents.
