What gauge copper wire did you use for the hooks please, I also ordered cannon barrels from Chuck, I hope I can do as good a job as you did...

It took me a full week to get my tackle even slightly right, incredibly fiddly at 1/60 for my fat fingers. Thankfully I only had 4 to do. If I knew of Chucks product months ago it would have been so much easier AND I cheated using commercial hooks. I reckon you're doing alright.

Your cannons look great. Hate to suggest the magnification required...but 3mm or 2mm (best) blocks will unclog the assembly. The bugger is that they are extremely hard to assemble! This is my cannon assembly at 1:48 scale with 3mm blocks. They burned me out but I was pleased with the look.

Cheers

Alistair

Yes Alistair, those blocks I used are 4mm, I have some of Chucks 2mm blocks that I bought for the gun tackles but I think they look too small, I will buy some 3mm ones and see how they go.

So do the tackles replace the retaining ropes or do the ropes stop the cannon and the tackle pull it back???

Mick

Hi Mick

The thicker rope looped around the butt of the barrel is a recoil rope. The tackles either side are for hauling the gun out after loading, there is also another tackle to be fixed to the back of the gun carriage for hauling it inboard for loading. Yeah the OcCre/Eaglemoss instructions only include the recoil ropes.

Hi Mike

I got the copper wire by stripping some electric cable, you know the white cables that run though the walls of your house, don't know what guage it is but it is 0.65 mm thick.

Hi Steve

I used blackened jewellery wire for my hooks. It is very soft but holds the tackles to the eyebolts just fine. It goes down to very thin gauges and is very cheap. I've got 2mm blocks for my Fly model - 1:64 - but I agree that even if they look right they are ridiculously small to try to work with. I might have a go, they came as a part of the upgrade kit, but will probably settle for 3mm blocks too. The AVS cannons even at 1:48 are smaller than the Fly cannons and 3mm blocks worked out fine for them. I also bought different cannons for the Fly about a year ago but wish I'd waited for Chuck to come out with his. They look much better...maybe I will indulge...

Look forward to your updates - it is very nice work that you are doing.

Great

Thanks a lot Steve

Cornwall model boats do 2mm blocks at 8p each so I may get some and see if my poor old arthritic fingers can do the job

  • 2 weeks later...

I managed to spend a bit of time on the ship today. I finished off the inner bobstay. I also redid the gammoning using rope made on my ropewalk, and it looks much better I think. I have decided not to use any black rope on my model, I will use the tan rope and blacken it with thinned black paint, I reckon it gives a more realistic look.

Looks really good Steve

Tell me, does your kit actually come with instructions about the roping, masts, spars etc

I say that as I am a little worried about getting to that point with mine as there are no instructions, just plans

Full size plans maybe but I have never done anything this complicated and a few pointers would have been good  :piratetongueor4:

No doubt when I get there there will be helpers about though  :dancetl6:

I just hope that I will be able to get mine looking as good as yours Steve

Hi Mick

Yes there are instructions in the partwork magazines but I am not following them or any other instructions. I am basing my rigging on contemporary sources, books such as "The Masting and Rigging of English Ships of War", "The Young Sea Officers Sheet Anchor" as well as referring a bit to Marquardt's "Anatomy of the Ship" and Parkin's "HMB Endeavour".

I got my 3mm blocks from Chuck today, so tonight I set up one of the gun tackles, I think the size looks right. Very fiddly work though, not looking forward to doing 11 more, I might need to buy a magnifying glass.

I like the heavy rigging on and around the bowsprit.

Bit dispiriting really.

Steve - you don't have a magnifying glass?! I amazed you do that beautiful work without one! I use Optivisors - they make me look like a complete dork (how my wife laughs at me proves that) but they are now my favourite tool. Buy a pair! They turn your model into what is seen in the photographs of it.

Totally agree with you in response to Pierre. I use MSW to help others (where I can), seek advice and to be inspired by, and learn from, those with skills that are very much higher than mine.

Hi Alistair

I have one of those small stands with the crocodile clips and a crappy magnifying glass, and I needed to use the magnifying glass for the first time ever when I was trying to thread the rope through those 3mm blocks. So yeah I am thinking of getting a pair of those magnifying glasses.

Definitely a recommended buy Steve - afterwards you will wonder how you did without them. I bought mine when I was doing my AVS cannons with 3mm blocks. I now don't work without them on - dorky? yes! but helpful too. I forget what lenses I got, there are various types based on distance and magnification.

Hi Steve,

Your rigged cannon look incredible.

I have my carriages together (they are 17mm long) but can't see how I could possibly have room to fit the rings and eye bolts on to them like yours though.

Hi Slog,

Yeah its hard enough at 1:51 but yours at 1:60 scale is harder!! I had to make really small eyebolts from copper wire, and the hooks are really small. I've been practicing some more hook making today, trying to get them smaller.

Super work Steve

As I have just said to Slog, he is an inspiration to me and so, most certainly, are you

I can look at your builds and see what I need to try and attain

I am a little disappointed with the quality of some of the OcCre wood  :(

Particularly what I have just used to make the samson posts, columns and handrails

Trouble is it is of course Lime and it is very difficult to get the tiny parts looking smooth

It would be nice if all the light wood was boxwood or similar but I guess that would work out rather pricey

Anyway my build is coming along nicely  :)

Keep it up  :10_1_10:
