Hi Adrieke,

I got the same paint set when I bought my Endeavour.

Be careful with the Matt Varnish depending on the look you want.  It does exactly as it says in the speil "does not change the appearance of the wood".

I used it on my deck and expected the grain to become a bit more emphasied, but it didn't change the appearance in the slightest and even after 2 coats you couldn't tell the deck had been varnish.  If that is the look you want then your laughing!

Also don't use it on top of previously painted surfaces as it can leave a hard milky appearance.  I used it on my red bulwarks thinking it would provide added protection to the paint but like I said it left a couple of milky areas.

Cheers

Slog

thanks for the pics Rowand saved them to my collection :)

thanks calt :)

thanks for the information Slog. I intend to do some testing before I dare use it on the ship. the mat varnish is supposed to give it a museum quality finish unless I read it wrong

  • 4 weeks later...

while waiting for some glue to dry on the kom I thought I once and for all tackled the paint problem

I had ordered some admiralty paints which are great but the red ochre does not match the color of the replica

I used this paint database which allows you to upload pictures and find out which color of several brands match it best :

http://scalemodeldb.com/paint

I finally decided on the Valejo Red color

I did a test and I am happy with the result

I also I drew the planking on to the bow deck . I will first add the waterways so I can paint them red without having to mask the other planks :)

Hi Adrieke,

I found the Admiralty Red Ochre to be a lot darker and muted than expected but its grown on me now, but definitely a lot darker than the replica which you are replicating with your build.

I also found the yellow ochre to be quite mustardy but again its grown on me LOL.

Cheers

hi Slog

yes the admiralty colors are probably not what I should have bought for making her look like the replica. they l come in handy for a future build

I have constructed the waterways for the bow deck.

sanded down the outside edge a few bits came off but they will be covered up

started on the middle deck. I used 3 separate pieces on each side so I could get the tiny bend in it.

the aft deck is going to be more annoying as the plywood false deck is about 1.5 mm less in width all the way.

Colours never do seem to be how you want them do they? I've been using Humbrol enamels as recommended in the instructions on my build, they seem to work quite well.

Anyway, your progress is good. Keep it up. :)

Looking very nice Adriaan

Paints and laquers can be a nightmare can't they

The OcCre version of the Endeavour is said to be taken from the original model

Now whether they mean when it was a coal carrier or when it was converted for Cook I don't know

I would like it to be as it was when Cook had it

I will have to ask them

Any ideas where I may get info on the colours and layout of the Cook version?????????????????

Keep it up  :10_1_10:

have been working on adding the side bits (sorry cant think of the correct name at the moment)

I drilled holes through them and used toothpicks as dowels to make them more secure as they need to be sanded a lot further on.

post-622-0-41163300-1373377515_thumb.jpg

about the sanding the next step would be to sand the outer edge following the curve of the bulkheads. this means that the width at the top will vary a bit

Hi Adrieke,

I'm also at the 'side bits' stage ... I think they're called Gunwales, but only because I checked the instructions.

As this is my first build, I will stick mainly to the kit and I have already finished my deck planking but I have decided to paint and I'm waiting for them to arrive. Thanks for answering a question I had about shaping the side bits.

looking forward to learning more about building the kit from you.

cheers,

Hi Adriaan

Good work with the gunwales

My instructions don't get as far as the gunwales before I have to start the first layer of planking which is the next job for me after a bit of sanding

I am going to take my time with this to hopefully limit the sanding and filling necessary

I normally tend to rush the first layer a bit as I know I can patch up but this time I will try and get it right  B)

How long before you start the planking???

Take care with yourself then Adriaan

attachicon.gifDSCN0335.JPG

Hi Andrieke im building as well the same boat ( my very first boat model)

Which part did you used to plank the lower dek? Do u cut yourself? And if it so how do u identify the right one to cut?

Sorry for my silly questions but it is my very first job and i dont want to spoiled so soon .

Than you for your time

hello olopa67. you need to use  5x0.6x500 veneering strips. just cut them to the length of the 3 false decks and glue them on it. if you want to simulate caulking there are several methods you can use. I myself use a black pencil.

thanks Timmo

This question is for Adrieke and Roland or anyone else with some advice. In building the Endeavour I am now at the stage where the various fittings will be installed on the deck. I am undecided as to whether to stain and varnish the deck or to paint it. Which ever I decide, it's probably best to do it now rather than after all the fittings are in place, don't you agree? If I paint the deck (and the hull) can you tell me where to find the color scheme and what brand paints to buy?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Pete

hello Pete

I myself think either staining or varnishing the deck. if you do that now know that most glues don't stick will on top of stain/varnish. most solve that by drilling small holes in the deck where the fittings go and then insert small pins/nails in the bottom of the fittings. i think you can also use epoxy glues

if you want to paint her admiralty has got paint sets for the endeavour and there are lots of photos of the replica that show how she was painted
