In the past three weeks I had a lot of family business to do... my dad became very sick (now he is getting better day by day), the car broke down (we ordered a new one) ... all that usual stuff that prevents you from having fun But nevertheless I found the time I needed to get some distance to the life's stress. I could continue with my Endeavour a little bit. I sanded the surface, filled the gaps, sanded again, filled up again... You sure know that game Occre provides some very tiny, thin strips for the second planking - not more than veneer. At first I was in doubt if that could work proper... but now I am positive about it. It works better than I thought. The white glue I use only needs to dry a moment an then I press the strip on the hull. It is in the correct place and shape and there is nothing more to do. I stained the strips for the upper part of the hull with a mixture of oak and teak as I did not want to paint the ship in a kind of yellow/orange as the instructions say. So it is a little difficult to sand the strips if necessary and to varnish them again after glueing. The varnish will not go into the wood where glue has closed the pores. It's tricky but with some patience and pressure it works. But as mentioned before: the strips do not need very much retouching. The upper part of the hull will be painted in blue as the instructions say. This is ok. I will also paint some of the decks furniture in red ochre (close to the replica) and the railing in black.(But this is future ) The lower part of the hull will stay in dark brown as the strips are that are provides with the kit. After the final varnishing they will have a very intense and warm colour. Well - thats the status quo at the moment. I gladly announce that our 14.5 yrs old Mister Super-Macho Morando has become well again. He suffers of a chronic disease called Ehrlichiose that makes the blood ineffective for oxygen-transport. But you can treat this with antibiotics and hope and patience. So we did and he is well again (looking for all the doggy girls in the neighborhood ). The Admiral and me... we are glad that he will have some more months or even years with us and his three girls which he lives together with. It was quite ardouos for him and us to get along - but we all did and are happy. So the build of the Endeavour can go on with full attention. maggsl_01 Posted June 6, 2015 Author Share #34 Posted June 6, 2015 Hello my friends.. it has become summer within a few days - today we had temperatures about 35° C here in the North of Bavaria. Usually it has about 20° at this time in the year. I know you Aussies all can just laugh about this but for us Germans this is really HOT... Nevertheless the past few days the Endeavour took a little progress. I finished the second planking, sanding and filling up a few small gaps. Meanwhile I started building the boat and some of the decks furniture like the booby hatch (says google...) I made some pics of this. I bent the washboard planks and pinned them on to the hull. So they tried to a perfect shape. After this I stained them black. Now its easy to fix them on the hull. And I painted the starboard. Step by step...Its about four months now that I build this impressing ship. I attached some pics to show the progress. But on the other Hand I admit that I spend quite a lot of time in my shipyard as it gives me deep relaxing moments to sit there and let a ship grow step by step. I have an office job with all day working with the computer, editing text-files and all this. So it is a very satisfying Hobby to create something with your own hands. I like it to do this... and it is a challenge for me that the Endeavour has got some sails. The planking is done now, I have to work on some details, but nothing special so far. I made a pattern for the anchor plates (??) and build them both up before glueing them. So I could form them into perfect shape and afterwards fix them on the hull. The work goes good without real problems. Cheerio - and have a look at the pice. The material is quite good and the instructions are good too.Its a difference to the common building with drawn plans for the hull and the deck furniture. The plans for the masts with all the blocks and that stuff are drawn and in scale 1:1. They seem to be very exact, but as you see - I am yet far away from this construction stage.And there are very detailled rigging plans also for the sails. I am looking Forward to that as I love rigging very much. But I have never done sails before... well... we will se how that works. It took a long time for me to decide what kit to purchase. At least Caldercraft was my favorite but no dealer around could deliver the kit. And I did not want to pay 30 Euro just for shipping (additional to the 410 euro for the kit). Much more than this the scale of the Occre (1:54) was decisive. The Price was good too - 210 Euro (was a Special offer). But nevertheless the build is really a joy and very satisfying. I look forward to watch your Progress. I had a lot of detail work like the rudder, hatches etc. Additional I carved some wood for the railing. All in all it was a every day-work, but not longer than about one hour a day - its a hot summer here The hull is not varnished yet, so the colors are not yet the final condition. It is really a fun to build this ship. BTW I ordered the Frigate Berlin from Corel. As you may know I want to build the Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde as next model. But I do not dare to do this and want to gather more expierence. So I think the Berlin should be a good training. And of course the Berlin is on my wishlist from the beginning as I want to build some of the german/brandenburgian ships from the 17th century. I love to see that everyone has an individual solution for the different duties like the windows or the figurine. Thats so amazing that two or mor models never look identical. It is always a kind of interpretation of the modeller. Thats interesting to watch this. And yes we heared in the news that there is a extraordinary cold winter with obviously a lot of snow down under... Well I could send you some of the warmth from here, as the heat grows up to more than 35° Celsius. Today the kit was delivered (sometimes I am really surprised by the qualitiy and the speed of the parcel services... one day after payment - the kit cost 450 Euro - the parcel was delivered). Pics will follow soon, but some questions after I opened the kit: There is sailcloth provided withthe kit, but no sewn sails. Can anyone help me how to sew them? I am NOT a tailor...and all what I know about needles is that they are usepul to pin planks onto the frames... Is there anywhere a kind of instruction available? The Berlin is single planked. Has anyone expierence with this? Should I better double-plank the hull or will this work? I am really looking forward to this challenge when my Endeavour is done (this will no be before Xmas). I think the Berlin will teach me to improve my skills more and more. Next to the Berlin the Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde will follow. So I have enough builds for the next three or more years. ( This is the original 1992 version not the new updated one) and one of the model builds in it is this ship. There is a 14 page chapter on the build. Unfortunately he built it minus the sails and confesses that he did not use it because the material is off balance ( what ever that means) and does not hang correctly). Maybe someone else on here can help on that. However the rest of the info seems quit good. He also stated that his wife made the sails for other ships .. I go my copy from Bookdepository and Abe books. It only cost me $3.50 AU last week so you should be able to get it cheaply also. Cheers Paul V Hi Pual, thx for your answer. I made my own for Bluenose schooner. They could be done better, but this was my first attempt with that kind of work. Some of the process is presented in my build log . Also Bluenose by Jack Tar build log was great help for me. It is not sci-fi scienece, so if I can help you, just ask . Congrats for purchasing beautiful Berlin, will follow that one too . Ahhh...and outside temp. are also on normal level now here in Centarl EU . Sorry for the poor qualitiy of the pics esp the colors. I did something wrong with the white balance and had to correct it whzen I did edit the pics. Next time will be better again - probably natural daylight. In one pic you can see a collage of some smaller pics. This shows the flags of the Corel kit Berlin I purchased some weeks ago. I am NOT satisfied with this extreme poor printing quality. So I looked in the net to find some better - and I found. There is a website in Germany from a specialist for flags. I changed some wood for the windlass and the davits. But nothing wrong with the original. But I used better some walnut and do not have to stain it. I made the bank for the belaying pins by myself as the provided preformed part is not suitable. I was not sure about the colors. There is no reliable or authentic source for the used colors. So I used some brown paint on the windlass figures and let the construction at least in trhe wooden structure. I saw that the parts in the well-known replica are in red ochre. But I do not want to paint all the bitts or other furniture in red ochre so I followed the Occre instructions. They recommend brown and wooden surface. The swivel guns are from plastic :o. But I dont like the provided guns in the kit. They are awful; I found some very good items made by the german manufacturer Aero-Naut, but they are plastiv. Well, after cleaning up the barrels and painting them they look very close to metal guns. David B Hi David thx for your words I use ordinary water-based paint hobby-paint for the blue and black parts or mat enamel for plastic or metal parts. I do not use any airbrush, just a paintbrush; the red parts (bulwarks) are red ochre by Admirality (I think this is a Calder Craft brand). The planks are just stained with waterbased stain, also the other wooden parts that have to be colored.
