USUAL EXCELLENT QUALITY SERVICE FROM CHUCK. HAVE DECIDED TO FOLLOW ALONG WITH CHUCKS BUILD BUT I DOUBT IF I CAN COMPARE WITH THE MASTER!!! BUILD SEQUENCE WILL BASICALLY FOLLOW CHUCKS POSTS . HOWEVER INSTEAD OF USING CASTELLO BOX I WILL BE USING SWISS PEAR AND EBONY FOR ANYTHING PAINTED BLACK IE WALES ,BULWARK CAPPING ETC. I MAY EVEN USE SOME PINK IVORY FOR SOME STRUCTURES THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN PAINTED RED OCHRE, BUT THAT MAY CHANGE AS MY LAST EXPERIMENTS WITH PINK IVORY WERE NOT VERY SUCCESSFUL. WORK HAS ALREADY STARTED ON BASIC COMPONENTS, HAVING PHOTOCOPIED THE RELAVANT BITS OF THE PLANS ( SORRY CHUCK I KNOW YOUR PLANS SAY NO COPYING BUT ITS PURELY FOR MY OWN USE AND I COUNDNT BRING MYSELF TO CUT INTO THE PLANS!!) THEY WERE PASTED ONTO 1/4 BIRCH PLY AND CUT OUT. BEARING IN MIND I DONT OWN A SCROLL SAW AND IF I DID IT WOULD HAVE TO LIVE IN THE GARAGE,TOO COLD TO WORK OUT THERE THIS TIME OF YEAR!,THE COMPONENTS WERE ROUGHED OUT WITH A 10 INCH BAND SAW AND THEN SANDED/FILED TO SHAPE. THE ENCLOSED PHOTOS SHOULD SHOW CURRENT PROGRESS. WORK WONT COMMENCE UNTIL IVE FINISHED THE TRITON CROSS SECTION, I DONT HAVE THE SPACE UNFORTUNATELY FOR TWO CON CURRENT BUILDS. Also...keep in mind that if you need any parts that I make available for the project in pearwood, I can laser cut them for you. I have the wood for that. Its just special order and will take a few days to cut after you request it. Parts like the windlass and such. Going with a metric size for things like the bu;kheads is no big deal at all. It wont matter as long as you adjust the width of the slots. Thanks for the offer with the laser cutting but I'm trying to make this as scratch built as possible! I will even have a go at making the blocks. Armament I had to order from you along with the plans as I'm between lathes at the moment. Looking forward to part three.....if I can get my planking half as good as yours I shall be well pleased. Finally just a thank you for all your hard work in making the plans and fittings available as well as taking the time to write a practicum. It was quoted as being exactly 1/4inch thick or 6.35mm and after putting a vernier quage at various points was as near as it needs to be. Sometimes 1/4 inch is mixed up with metric 6mm. It was also qoutee as being laser cutting quality. I was pretty impressed with thickness and flatness and I only found one small void whilst cutting out the bulkheads. yamsterman Posted April 26, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted April 26, 2015 hi all not much progress to report. but we do have a nice pile of components ready to go. have also been trying out chucks edge bending method on a model shipways pinnance kit. i have enclosed some photos of this model for reference purposes. not finished yet and some more sanding yet to do on the hull. far too much glue used on the strake to frame joint and is going to take some cleaning up. lesson learnt! will be restarting in earnest once the triton cross section is finally finished again comments and critisms are greatly appreciated cheers....mick Omega1234, cog, Dubz and 9 others 12 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Those planks of bass wood started out at1/32 inch thick by the time I've cleaned up the interior they will probably be more like 1/64inch. Scary!!! I just saw your post about Aeropiccola's HMS Victory's kit at 1/170 scale, which should be nice but challenging. Out of interest, how big will the hull be? The reason I ask, I have that happening on my Bounty Launch, so I'm scaling back on the glue, but I do have some glue blobs to be removed. I have some narrow chisels and a tool meant to scrape molded on details from plastic railway cars. yamsterman Posted April 27, 2015 Author Share #25 Posted April 27, 2015 Hi ken I think I will be going for the thin chisel followed by some fine sandpaper glued to a shaped block.any glue above the level of the tharwts doesn't really matter as there is a layer of planking above them plus the capping rail. The bottom of the hull will be covered by the bottom boards....but still needs to be as clean as possible. Nothing worse than a blob of glue poking its nose out on a finished model!! I will check this with the plans in longridges book which are 1/192 and see what the difference is. I don't fully trust the scale quoted on commercial kits!
