Just a little update. I trimmed the hull planks. Next I'll use some wood filler and sand them nice and smooth before planking the second layer. Unfortunately I'm going out of town for the holiday so I won't be getting any building done this weekend. Thanks for looking! -Matthew

I made the deck planks 80mm. That length was suggested in a book - Ship Modeling Simplified. To get the staggered look, I alternated 40mm and 80mm lengths on the first row (the aft end). I actually think the model's instructions just said to lay full length strips and use a pencil to simulate the shorter lengths, but this definitely looks better than that.

I finished the first layer of planking. Below is a picture. Overall, I'm happy with how it turned out. There are definitely some mistakes but for a first time effort I think it came out alright. After it dries I'll trim off the excess and sand it. It should look much more respectable then.

Here are a couple updates on the planking. I've only got about 3 planks remaining on each side until the I'm finished with the first layer of planking. Overall I'm happy with the way it's turned out. The planking actually goes pretty quickly once you set aside some time to sit down and work on it. Any advice on how to trim the excess off the ends of the planks? I'm worried about breaking the glue bonds holding them to the frame when trying to trim.

Thanks for the info Brian. The tip about sanding before gluing is helpful and I'll keep that in mind when using the oil.

Hexnut - I actually used pencil to simulate the caulking. I colored the side of the planks with a 0.7 mechanical pencil. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

I see no reason why you couldn't plank the hull before doing the deck. It might make it a little harder to trim and sand the deck planking, but I don't think it'd be too tough. For me, because this is my first POB ship, I think planking the deck was a nice warm up for planking the hull. I really enjoyed planking the deck. I've planked about half of the hull - slow progress lately. Need to get back in the shipyard! I'll post some pictures new soon. Pete - do you have a build log up for your Virginia?

Thanks guys. I've started plamking the hull. I hope to get the first layer finished this weekend. I'll try to put up some pics then. It's a bear! Tapering and placing the planks is definitely an art that will take some getting used to. I'm just glad there are two layers! Pete - you said you bought the Virginia, have you opened it up yet? This is a picture of the masting on the big sheet that is provided with the kit. It's all messed up - is yours the same way? It's a bummer because it shows some of the mast details and rigging which I think is going to be tough for a first-timer like me. That part of the build is still a ways off yet, but hopefully I can get the corrected picture.

Hello everyone. I spent some time this weekend nailing the false deck to the keel and frames and gluing it all together. I also planked the deck. Starting the deck planking: Entire deck planked: Can't forget the holes for the masts: And trimmed: I used pencil on the edges of the planks to simulate weathered caulking. I'm really happy with the way it turned out: I'm planning to varnish the deck. Can anybody recommend what type of varnish to use? The book recommends an acrylic matte finish varnish. I don't want to change the color of the deck. Also, whats a good method to simulate nails on the ends of the planks? I'm thinking of just using a pencil. Any other thoughts? I've started carving balsa blocks to put in the end slots between the bulkheads to make planking easier. This week/weekend I'll start planking the hull!

For my first build I chose AL's Virginia 1819 schooner. It appears to be challenging but not too ambitious for a first build. Inside the box: Keel, bulkheads, and false deck ready to be assembled: After nailing the false deck to the keel, not glued together: I plan to align the bulkheads and nail the false deck to them and glue it all together this week. Next weekend starts the planking! Any advice is welcome!
