Hi bobc622,
You may also note I built a few extra items on the deck that were not part of the kit.
You will see those items in my photos.

Hi bobc622
Thank you for your kind comments.
This was a great project but you are right that the instructions could have been more detailed.
The best thing I did was buy the book called the “Anatomy of the ship-Captain Cooks Endeavour “ by Karl Heinz Marquardt.
This book became my bible and it showed all I needed.
I got two instruction books in the kit,one with black and white photos and one with descriptive wording on each stage.
If you like a copy of the second instruction book I could send them to you in a seperate email if you want give that to me.

I have actually walked over the Batavia in Holland and was a very impressive ship.
Very similar to the Vaasa .
Look forward seeing this model develop.

Hi Paul
welcome to the world of retirement.
Sometimes you get the feeling you are busier now then when you worked but it’s all totally enjoying.
Did this model and thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip.
Enjoy,
Eddie

In this update, I finished fitting the bulkheads and dry fit the related decks to make sure the bulkheads fit and are square to the keel. Bulkheads are now glued in place and started sanding the ribs and support structures to form the shape of the bow.
I have a couple of questions as i'm getting ready to plank the decks. The plans call for using a pencil to darken the seams and draw plank ends every 60mm. I plan to use a pencil to color the edges of the planks before gluing to the sub-deck as many of you do, and I like the effect that leads to. I guess my question is should I make individual planks so that I can color the ends before gluing them down or is this too much of a hassle? If I make individual planks, what is the likelihood that a plank may come loose or one end curl up in the future or is this really not an issue? I want to be (reasonably) accurate, but is it worth the extra work, or should I stick with the plans, lay a continuous plank the entire length of the deck, then draw in the plank ends?
Another question about stains. The plans call for a water based walnut stain to be used on the deck and eventually the hull planking. I've not used stains in wood models before, does it react similar to staining molding for your house? Meaning, the longer you leave the stain on, the darker the wood? Can you even wipe off the stain or does it soak into the soft wood very fast? Is there a good technique to apply the stain? So many questions. I will browse around the other builders logs for ideas...
Any guidance appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Hi DanielD
when I did my decks I laid individual planks down and added some very fine black cotton that has been run through bees wax.
This gives a great appearance of caulking.

Hi Snoepert nice to see you back on the Vasa . The rigging plan is totally wrong that Deag supplied . They show blocks for the hallards when they should be pulleys. I was in the same boat but luckily Michael aka mid1400s came to my rescue by sending me plans from Billings kit and Corel plus I also looked at how Dutch ships were rigged for that period. You could also email Fred Hocker at the Vasa museum in Stockholm.
Hope this helps
Martyn
Thank you Martyn,
I thought maybe I could follow the rigging plans I have for the SOS which is quite detailed.
i will look into Michaels posts to get more info up front.

Simply breath taking build. Is there a build thread for SOS. Seeing your build and how wonderful she can turn out, has me chomping at the bits now for mine. But will take 12 months to get all the material. Did you order any plans/drawings while building. I can order a set from the Dromedary in Texas, but they are not cheap! Thanks so very much Eddie for sharing your craftmanship and skills.
Rick
Rick, thank you for your kind comments.
i have attached the web site I purchased both ships .I also bought plans for the SOS but the details supplied with the kits are quite good.
