  1. Looking for some info on the fittings that would be on the inside of a gun port lid in reference to both half port and full port lids on the main deck and how the lids would be secured to keep them from opening. I have seen drawings with one or two eye bolts on the lower inside edge of a lid with a comment they were use to keep the lid closed but nothing showing how they were secured and to "what". Also I assume on the lower half port lid that there would be two eye bolts to allow the lid to pulled closed but how would the two halves have been secured. Hope someone can help. orthojoe
  2. I don't have a lot of experience here as I am working my second model. Both models are painted and coppered which can cover a lot of flaws but I find I am more attracted to models that try to be histroical accurate as to those that are a piece of fine furniture. I do appreciate any person in any craft that can make wood tell a story so I do enjoy a ship that has finely crafted and well finished wood. My next ship La Couronne will be done mainly to display the wood, minimal paint to see if I can do a good job. In the end I think it is a just matter of personal preference.
  3. Thanks all for the replies. A lot of good info and the pictures and drawings give great detail as well as options. The Victory post had a lot of good info besides securing of the guns. Does anyone have an opinion about double lid port (guns run out) vs single lid (guns parallel) for the Astrolabe or is that just personal preference.
  4. Thanks for the reply Brian. The pic you sent is helpful and if I do a double lid port I'll use that without the muzzle lashing. I seen the drawing in Roth's book which is the same as is Monfold's and both are for the gun deck. I have not been able to find anything for main deck or for a quartedeck. I still want to find more detail on lashing a gun parallel to the bulwark. If you run across anything please let me know. thanks orthojoe bleeten@gmail.com
  5. I am building the Mantua Astolabe and plan to have her under sail so I would like to have the cannons secured/housed. I have received information showing that the cannons would have been turned parallel to the bulkwarts and held with the breeching but I thought there would be more to the lashing then just the breeching and am looking for more details. Also I have seen drawings of the Astrolabe that seem to show her with a double lid port. If that is an acceptable way to display her I rather would do that. If I did a double lid port I assume the guns would be secured in the run out positon but how would the lashing be done. Would the gun tackles be used to help secure the gun or be removed. thanks orthojoe
